    Inside Flavours of China,
    Kolkata
    by Kumarjit
Calcutta has long been famous for its diverse range of cuisine, ranging from Japanese to Thai to Italian. One of the best places to try Chinese food is the Flavours of China, located at Park Street. You can get anything starting from Cantonese to Hunan dishes. Do try out their marinated lobster and other seafoods. You will ask for more!

My favourite dish here is Hunan Chicken. The sauce is mouth-watering.

We had our anniversary dinner on 23rd November at Kim Ling of Tangra, China Town, Kolkata. We had our anniversary on 18th November, but since I was away to Madhya Pradesh for training, we went out for dinner on 23rd, accompanied by Rakhi's parents who had come to our place for Rakhi's operation.

Well, Kim Ling is also one of the 30 Chinese eating house of Tangra run by the Chinese families of kolkata. They serve authentic and genuine Chinese food at a very resonable price and give good quantity. Quality and quantity wise no cheating. That's why Kim Ling is always full and the waiting time is about one hour on wekends. They have two sections one exclusively for couples and family and the other open for anybody. The house has a full fledged bar also.
All the food offered and ordered are of excellent quality one is guaranteed to get satisfaction.

We had hot & sweet soup, Cantonese fried chicken, American Chopsuey and mixed fried rice and Beer.

Their Cantonese fried chicken is superb!! No one can eat just one....!!!!

Those who know us surely know about our liking for Chinese food also. Well for many days we have been thinking of visiting Mainland China, one of the upmarket restaurants of Kolkata. They have branches at Bombay and Delhi too. This place is known for fine Chinese food and great seafood. This is also very expensive as the food price is almost double than the speciality Chinese Restaurants of Tangra. But the ambience, the service, the decor and the quality of the food compensate for the high price tag. Since, this is located in a very posh area so the clientele is exclusive. You may be sitting to some movie actor, like we sat next to Pallavi Chatterjee a Bengali movie actress. This Sunday on 10th December we visited this place to experience their food.

Food is certainly excellent for the price but as a regular Chinese food eater I will still rate the food of Beijing of Tangra is better.

One great achievement of this place, Munu learnt how to eat with Chopsticks.......!!!!!!

We had draught beer Rs.110/- per mug, Chicken, Pan fried noodles, Sczewan Rice and Lobsters. Jumbo Prawns and Lobsters costs about Rs.600/-(USD12), Beer (USD3), so all other dishes around Rs300- Rs600/- per plate( USD8-12).

Their Lobsters are definitely good so is their Jumbo prawns, goes down well with their draught beer. This place is certainly a place for experience.

Those who know me well, also know that I am a great food lover and like to explore, experience various kind of food. I noticed, I never wrote anything on our best food " The Lucknawi Gharana", though I am a great connousier of Biryani dishes. I have great penchant for Hyderabadi Gharana and Lucknavi Gharana. The two Gharanas of Nawabs ( mainly Nawab Wazid Ail Shah of Lucknow ( read more about him in my off the beaten path tip) and Nizams of Hyderabad), the two have patronised, experimented, indulged, promoted and pampered the greatest Chefs of India.their culinery expertise is now known all over the world. The various Kebabs, Biryanys came from their stables only. They perfected the art of Mughlai cooking, though the original Mughal food came from Samarkand in Central Asia with Babar the Emperor!

Lucknow, regraded as one of finest cities of India emanates a culture that combines emotional warmth, a high degree of shophistication, courtesey and love for gracious living. The sublime cultural richness famous a" Awadhi Tehzeeb", blends the culture of two communties living side by side for centuries, sharing similar interest, speaking a commmon language and sharing their food too. Many of the cultural traits and customs peculier to Lucknow have become living legends today. The credit for this goes to the Nawabs of Awadh, who took very keen interest in every walk of life and encouraged them to attain a rare degree of perfection.

Like various art form, the culinary art of Lucknow was also raised to a fine art under Royal patronage. A favourite past time of the nobility of Awadh was perfecting the art of cooking. The Bawarchis and Rakabdars of Awadh, by their expertise of Blending spices, achieved a high degree of finesse in cooking and presentation of food that too culinary art to the high realms.

Arsalan takes a leaf from the culinary extravaganzas of the Nawabs and brings to you a "Re-past". In an ambience and hospitality, evocative of those golden times when every meal was a feast and every feast a gourmet's delight.

We too, on Sunday ( 14th Sept'08) decided to discover exotic creations from the secret recipes of Nawab's kitchen brought to Kolkata by the chefs of Arsalan:
We treated ourselves with Kasturi Kebab, Peshawari Tikka Kebab, Lukhnavi Mutton Biryani Spl, Gosht Kali Mirch, Keema Naan, Chicken Rezala , Butter Naan and Firni as dessert. Each dish was a signature dish and I think I orederd too much food for only three of us. You can guess the quantity was generous and the size of the Naans was so big that we had to get it packed for Munu.

Out of all the food we ordered, I felt Kasturi Kebab, Gost Kali Mirch ( Mutton made with Black Pepper) and Biriany was real exotic. It was a great feeling and great treat for all of us. To taste all the items there one by one I think I will have to make at least 10 repeated visits as to explore the gastronomic delights of Nawbabs require time, patience, ambience, wilingness to explore the inner secrets of the food, only then one can enjoy the exotic food there. We found the quality of meat to be of very good. Only good quality Rewazi Mutton can make the Signature dishes a perfect one!

My this tip is also dedicated to my VT friend Kashi Mallaya ( Mallyak of Sydney)and Faiza_Ifrah ( Canada).

We also had Mutton Tikka kebab at this place. Made of tender Lamb meat. The process is same, taste is same with different kind of meat. I want to tell you that Tandoor food is an Indian speciality and and it a traditional thing. It cannot be explained then tried at home. But the process originated from Central Asia, travelled with The Mughals to India. Over the years it is perfected. the beauty of the food is getting the mastery of marination and coocking over slow fire. Once it is learnt it can give you delight. We have tried it at home with Electric Oven, OTG even Microwave but could never obtain the taste. It can be only obtained with SLOW CHARCOAL FIRE!!!! That's the secret.

Mutton Tikka Kebab: process same as Chicken Tikka kebab.

I am also putting the picture of the crew who makes it possible. Please dont' go by their looks, they are wonderful cooks. They cook about 300Kgs of Chicken everyday!!!

Our quest for better food in Kolkata is still continuing. Well our love for Chinese food will continue. I thought that I will write some tips on our famous Park Street restaurants for our friends from Europe, America, Asia, and Down Under who visit Kolkata quite often but end up eating in some lousey place or become sick after eating our Indian food at unclean and non descript place! I have seen European eating Butter nan with Chicken Bomb! simply not knowing what to eat In India! Here they will feel at home!
Mocambo completed its' 50th year in 2006. They are certainly among the best in Kolkata when it comes to better dining. They serve a variety of authentic European, Italian and Indian food. This is one of the favourite places of Europeans and movie stars. They also had a dance floor but our Marxist govt. closed it in 1977( sick!!) Our famous Pam Crains & Lois Banks used to play here!! Now it is only Bar cum Restaurant.

This place is also very near with in walking distance of Sudder Street where most of the Foreigners stay! Just give a try to this place.

Well in my child hood we used to frequent this place! We like almost all of their dishes. Recently we visited this place twice in a fortnight just to experience their better food and teach Munu about nostalgia of this place!
we had Devilled Crab and Fish Muniere as starter, followed by Chicken Tetrazine (Rakhi), Mixed Grill sizllers( Goutam), Chicken Hamburger Sizllers( Munu). we finished our meal with Chocolate Souffle! All of them were simply superb!

    Calcutta coffee house
    by sourbugger
Calcutta has always had the reputation of being the cultural and intellectual heart of Indian society. Whatever may have happened to the fortunes of the city in other fields, Calcutta remains intellectually aloof from other cities - and the Indian Coffee house plays a major part in that scene.

The cavernous coffe house situated in College street is a fine Calcutta institution. Don't expect anthing fancy - just damn good coffee that is served for peanuts. Run as a co-operative (there are branches throughout India) most of the coffee drinkers are students.

For the price of cup of coffee (you can get simple meals as well) you can sit and read all day if you care to. The decor may consist of smoke stains and cobwebs, but the chatter always fills the hall, and you could get intoa conversation about just about anything.

I saw it as a kind of pre-computer era chatroom, where most people are interested to hear your views on any given topic, with the advantage that you can 'earwig' other discussions at the same time.

A great exeperience, even if you are just coming for the coffee.

Our liking for good chinese food brings us to this place again and again. We like to experiment with the vairious type of food available here with our friends and family. Today again( we are one of the regulars here) on 14th Jan07, we had lunch here and this time we selected the menu without much help from the house, though they were quite helpful to suggest us the menu. To our surprise we wre not disappointed neither with the food or the service. Above all their Hostesses Tabassum and Priya were always accomodative when ever we called for table reservation. Tabassum always ensured us the best available seat in the restaurant.
This time thre was a slight disappointment for me my favourite, Draught Beer was out of stock. I had to satisfy myself with the regular bottled beer, which has lot of Glycerine added as preservative.

Well we had many dishes this time and all are favourite. Today we had Crispy Fish Golden Ginger ( Rs.240/- USD 6), Chicken in a Sapo( Rs220/- USD 5.80), Clay Pot Rice Chicken (Rs.165/- USD 4), Fukien Crabmeat Fried Rice( Rs.170/- USD 4), Lamb in Choilli Broth ( Rs.230/- USD 5.80), Mongolian Turkey ( Rs.450/- USD 10), Squids Sichuan Chilli Sauce( Rs.200/- USD 5) and Kingfisher Beer ( Rs140 USD 3 Per Bottle) all these attarct VAT of 10%.

In my view Mongolian Turkey was a disappointment and highly overly priced.

Marco polo in China is one of the fine dining place in Kolkata. It is slightly up market in price, location, ambience, service with smile, quality of food. Yes Marco Polo himself would have found this place worh spending his hard earned money. The food, the staff, the owner all come to you with smile. It is guaranteed you can not go out unsatisfied. This place is surely a joint where you would love to take your friends for dinner. We took our VT friend Jon( shintarojon) of Manila on 29th September for lunch, while visiting the Durga Puja pandals.

In Park Street and nearby streets there are about 150 good eating places( Calcuttans love dining out), this place is certainly stands out. This place is also of my daughter's ( Munu) choice. During festival time when there are more people out dining, they also offer Buffet, with about 18 items, including 4/5 non veg and the menu includes Prawns, Lobsters, Crabs for Rs 400/- (USD10) plus tax. You cant ask for more!! worth spending your money.

" Everyone eats and drinks yet only few appreciate the taste of food"- Confucius( 551BC- 479BC). Well these are the Restaurant motto written on their card, I find every word is true. I took about 10 pictures of the food and the Buffet spread and had 4 dishes, I find all the dishes are excellent. They have not sacrificed the quality of the food even during the Puja( highly Crowded) time. We got our table at around 4.00PM after waiting for 35mts. We had Prawns( My favourite), Mixed rice, Chicken, Noodle made in my daughters' way( I dont' know she has crave for Chinese noodle). All are excellent.

If you only want food it is about USD 10 Per Person in case you add beer to your accompaniment it is more. We had A La Carte menu.
