This place is undoubtedly one of the most famous Dhaba ( Rustic Eatery, where Punjabi or North Indian rustic food is served) of Kolkata city. It is normally frequented by thousands of people. Situated over an acre of land, just opposite the Airport on the main highway no 34. The place has completed more than 25 years and have changed many fold. This is now attracting crowd from Calcutta city who now comes in cars only, drink minarel water or beer( Hard liquor is also served) and does not mind spending Rs.1000 or more for two persons. Naturally, seeing the crowd coming in the Greed of the owner's have creped in, they have Jacked up the prices many fold. Now they have started charging 3-4 star prices for their food. It no longer remains an eatery for the commoner or for the tourists for that matter. The food is very very expensive here and the taste!! Well there are better places in Kolkata serving very tasty food at less than half the prises. I find this is no special place and the prices are higher than Park Street restaurants. They should realize that by putting lots of butter does not make food special. If they are charging star prices then the facilities must also be of star category, crew should be clean , the ambience should be better. I was surprised to see that one Naan costs here Rs.40 + VAT, Beer Rs.120 +VAT, Dal Makhni Rs. 95 +VAT and the quantity? Very less. In Park street a beer costs Rs. 85-100 with VAT in airconditioned atmosphere with proper service and etiquette. Here the crew behaviour is very very unprofessional. I dont recommend this place to go to eat after driving 37KMs. If they reduce their prices by 30-40% ( Chance is bleak) ten it may be worth. On top of that it has earnedthe ill reputation of being a bar, even their glass, table cloth, napkins are sponsored from liquer companies.
We had Naan, Chicken Leg Kebab, Fish Tikka, Dal Makhni, Veg Jhalfrazi & Beer. Fish Tikka is good. Colen & Nigel Performing a Dire Straits number! by goutammitra, 4 more photos I believe you have already read my first tip on Trincas. In my first tip I mentioned about the live Band out there, with Crooners. The restaurant have been conducting Live Band during dinner time for a very very long time at least for the last 50 years or perhaps more. The Restaurant conducts live band from 6PM to 8.30 PM ( Hindi) and from 8.30 PM to Midnight ( Western/ English/Hindi Pop). This is enjoyed by a section of visitors daily. For Regulars they even have some tables reserved and marked for Regulars visitors!! They also have a small Dance floor where you can dance with your partner or solo. On last 7th February we celebrated Rakhi's birthday there. The songs belted out by the team of Colen , Noel, Nigel & Stafford were excellent. The band is professional, perfect and knows the songs very well. They will also belt out occasional Blues and old Pat Boone numbers. Remember this was the launching pad which launched, Freddy Murcury, Usha Uthup, Pam Crains to the fame..... This is one of the perfect places to spend your evening and believe me you will not regret it.They will also keep your request for any perticular song. They have a large and well practiced collection of songs!!
This time we had , Chicken Tikka, Chilli Chicken Boneless, Mix Grill Sizzler & my favourite Fosters Beer! Now the city of Kolkata has almost all international brands, from a Rolex watch shop to KFC. It has everything and this shows the city is developing. Calcutta already has Two KFC outlets and they have plans for more. Big Mac is also coming in Christmas time. They are opening 12 outlets. The backpackers will never be out of home and can have food of their choice for less than $5. On third Nov06 we visited the Salt Lake outlet of KFC. It is here for more than a year now. For those who dont' know much about Kolkata, at one time our Communist local govt. has opposed opening any Western business houses, that has American links. That includes Coco Cola, Mc Donalds and so on. Now they are inviting foreign investments of any kind. It's a good sign.
We had the Chicken Burger, and Fried Chicken meal. It's value for money. we were served by a nice girl Preeti Gupta. But Munu could not eat much as she had a full stomach. The meal costs Rs99 plus taxes. According to Indian taste they are also serving vegetarian meals and also rice meals. No wonder the local crowd are falling for them. Now in Kolkata there are many speciality vegetarian restaurants like Delhi and Bombay. They serve North Indian and especially Rajasthani food. The food is selected by the customer himself and is totally self served. The atmosphere is very clean, odour less and perfect place to get treated. The owner of this place is Mr.Prabhudayal Agarwal is a Marwari Businessman ( From Rajasthan) settledin Kolkata for centuries. He started his career as a ready made Marwari snack maker about 20/25 years back and then graduated in Restaurant business, now he has many restaurants like this in Kolkata and many more in all over India. In Kolkata there is a sizeable population of Marwaris and Gujratis who are predominantly Vegetarian. They along with Bengalis( Who are Non Vegetarians) are patronising these vegetarian restaurants. Till a few years ago eating out was not in Marwari culture though they are economically very sound but now things are changing. Now this place has a restaurant, a grocery shopping mall and a snack & chocolate shop as well. A real nice place to visit on weekend for dining and shopping as well.
We had varieties of dishes, like Raj Kachori, Veg Pizza, Dal Makhni, Naan, Malai Kofta, Allu Chaat,Gol gappa ( Phuchka). All are excelent and one has to appreciate the fact that this place caters more than thousand customers a day. Only fixed menu is available, so all the dishes are cooked in large scale. Maintaining the taste and flavour is a great task and the cooks there make it possible! This place is highly recommended for those who dont like vegetarian food but I am sure that they will have a second thought after they visit the place! Infront of Sigree Flame & Grill, dressed Bengali by goutammitra, 4 more photos Yesterday 14th of April was our Bengali New Year's Day! We thought we shall revisit again Sigree and savour the dinner out there. What cold be the better occasion or this, after our not so good experience with Marco Polo's Bengali food this afternoon for lunch, this was really satisfiying. With added menu on the Grill side and main course, it was an excellent menu overall. This time they had added Skewered Prawns and Beckti Fish along with the regular Sheekh Kebab and others. In the main course, there was Mutton Biryani, Fish Chutniwala, Chicken and on dessert side there was famous Bengali Rasagolla, Sandesh, Jafrani Kheer, Ice Cream & Brownies to name a few. All this came for Rs. 350/- plus taxes. Service and crew member's behaviour was excellent and very helpful. A great satisfaction indeed! Dont make a mistake of going to this place by the look of it. The first person you encounter with is the main stewart who is perhaps the most ill-behaved man of the hospitality industry. Most probably the owners of this eating joint do not take into account the importance of customer satisfaction. Otherwise the present crew(staff) would not be there. The food is good but you will loose your apetite the moment you find cockroaches all over your table. But one thing that i would like to say is that their is no repentance from the side of the staff members for their mannerisms. The ambience of the place is good. Inspite of it a person will not be ready to go their a second time. With this kind of behaviour this place will not last long in a place like Calcutta where along with good food, and ambience good behaviour and service matters a lot.
We had Peshwari Raan, a Full leg of Lamb marinated for 24hrs and then Barbecued in slow fire. We had Lasuna Paratha, parathas ( a type of Indian bread smeared with Butter prepared in a frying pan) made with garlic. The food was really excellent but we lost apetite. I will not recommend this place to anybody. It is clear that management has left this place to be run by their staffs only. Who is ensuring that this place will close down soon. It was not only us who found this place BAD, but the couple next to us found small cockroaches in their table, and a team of ladies were having Kitty party also loudly commented that their service is very poor and crew had no time to look after them. In our quest to discover new eating places at affordable price, we found this new place Kurry Klub at Free School Street. This has opened very recently on 10th November. There is another Kurry Klub at Lansdowne Road also and what I learnt from them that this is their second branch. On our anniversary on 18th November, we decided to venture out at this place. We had lunch at this place with Chicken Steak, Crispy Honey Chicken, Fish Roll with butter paper, Squid butter pepper garlic and Crepes Fantasia as desert. The food and the service was excellent but the potions are very small compared to the price. So you end up paying more to get your stomach full. There is drink served. In my view, this place is going to have tough time with high price and small potions as it is located on Free School Street, which is very near to Park Street, where competition is waiting in the name of Peter Cat, Mocambo, Quality, Sourav's and so on. They will have to serve quality food at affordable price otherwise it will be a one time visit place! I have made it clear to them that their potions are too small( See picture). Alone the taste is not going to help them to establish. In our quest for better Chinese food we discovered this place Shun Li ( smooth Sailing) yesterday. We got the tip from Mr.Star Zinkojai, Vice President, Holcim Thailand, who is right now posted at Kolkata with our co. The restaurant is run by Matthew Chen and his sister Mitchell Wong. They cater mostly to the Chinese people, who live there and visiting foreigners. The food is cooked by Mitchell and her Mother. So the taste is just great and very authentic Chinese above all this place is not very crowded so you can just order our food and relax. It will be better if you leave the choice to Matthew. We became very friendly and we also invited them to have Bengali food with us some day.
We had Spinach Curry from Hakka region, vegetable Prawn, Choi sui fish, Mixed noodle with gravy, Plain Rice and washed it down with Black Label beer. the food was too much for us and we had to bring back some of the delicay back home. The food was simply superb compared to other places of Tangra, we had chinese Food. we have decided to visit this place again and again. On 12th October our VT friends from Bristol ( UK) Grets & husband David arrived in Kolkata for a few hours on their last leg of tour to Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sikkim & India. We had decided that we shall go for Bengali dinner but when we learnt that they will have to leavefor airport at 3.30 AM to catch flight for London, we changed our plan to have Indian Tandoor or North Indian as experimenting Bengali dish ( Its normally spicy) for dinner would require proper rest for the night. Then we moved in to our favourite place Zaranj on Sudder Street one of the better eating places of Kolkata( They are a speciality Restaurant for North West Frontier Province Cuisine & Indian Tandoor food) What we had was a pure delight for us and Grets & David said they were delighted too!
We had Murgh Nawabi ( Chicken Reshmi Tikka Kebab), Machli ( Fish / Beckti) Masala Kebab for starter with our favourite beer Kingfisher. Then we had Zaranji Raan ( Whole Leg of Lamb marinated and then cooked in slow fire), Butter Naan ( Indian Bread made with yeast), Maa Ki Daal ( Thick Lentil soup with butter) for main course. All the dishes can be rated very high for our Indian palate, I am sure both David & Grets enjoyed it as we did. We normally like Chinese food as we are very fond of it. The city of Calcutta has more the 500/600 places serving Chinese food. But in the China Town (Tangra) it is authentic Chinese at a very resonable price. Therer are about 35/40 Chinese Restaurants in Tangra, some of them can even accomodate 300 persons at a time!!! Recently , when our VT friend Junilo S. Espiritu came from Manila, we again visited Beijing of Tangra again as I like it's food and ambience besides excellent staff behaviour. Here are some of the photographs taken on 20th July with Jon. He is Teetotaller, does not even take Beer( Our Philipino friend ISA would be very happy to know) and a very poor eater. God can only help him! !But he liked the place and the food. Once he comes back from Kathmandu we shall explore other places of Kolkata.
