 | Kolkata (Calcutta) Restaurants | Tips 51 - 60 of 97 | | As usual they are at their best, having perfected the art of making chinese food, the Anjan Chatterjee ( The CMD of Mainland China), team is sailing ahead. This newly opened Mainland China at South City Mall is surely their better addition after Oh Calcutta and Mainland China at Gurusaday Road. We took our American guests Sonia Das and her Professor father Dr.Mihir K. Das, from Long Beach, Calfornia, USA, to taste their food. Sonia herself is an excellent cook apart from being attorney in Long Beach, she too vouched that thefood and the taste of Mailland China is just authentic! We tried their roast Pork, cooked in Cantonese style, Prawns, Egg Plants, Mix Noodles( The names will be posted at later date as the bill remains with sonia and I dont' remember the names exactly).

Zaranj & Jongs' are at the same place and surely among better restaurants of Kolkata or perhaps India. One side is Jongs' and they serve Chinese, Thai and Japanese authentic dishes with mother's touch. Food is excellent, you just can not dislike any food you might have ordered as it is prepared by Master Chefs from their own country and the main paste comes from the country of origin. We had Thai food yesterday on my Birthday celebration. We had Satay Kai, Kaeng Kae( Red), Chicken Magsaha and Dansberg Beer. It was just excellent. Service was personalized by steward Joe Pasker, who made our choice of food. Just a great experience!!!!!!
All dishes mentioned abve are excellent but we liked Satay Kai the most. Rest of the food had similarity of our Indian cuisine. Last Sunday we tried our luck at yet another Chinese Restaurant of China town, China Haus! There are about 50 or 60 odd restaurants in China Town all converted from Tannery to Restaurant. The food and the decor is very good but they have jacked up the prices due to Bird Flu in Bengal! They are not serving Chicken anymore but have replaced their menu with Meat and Fish, which is naturally more expensive. Nobody minds as long as it is safe and good for health. Addendum: April'08- Burd Flu is now over in Bengal and Chicken is back in the menu in all restaurants!
We tried their Roasted Sizzling Pork, Sizzling Prawn, Cantonese Rice and Rice Noodles. All were excellent in terms of taste but I still rate the food of Shun Li is better. Well we Calcuttans know about this joints, they are more than 70 years old. Can you believe this!! During British days ( Dalhousie is office district) the Indians were not allowed to enter into the Restaurants near Dalhousie as it was Red area. So where the Babus ( the Bengali Clarks/ Junior employe) will eat during lunch period. During early 20th century Toast, Omlette, Stew, Chicken, Mutton cutlet, Fish Fry were totally unknown menu for Bengali Babus. These were available but at posh restaurants like Metropol, Firpos, Great Eastern Hotel where entry was restricted and money was too much for the Babus. Then came people like Chitta Ranjan Das, who started roadside eatery, without any name just on the footpath, where Babus will come during lunch time to have their dream menu of Chicken Stew, Cutlets, Toast, Omlette and all those Englishmen used to have. Easy on stomach, digestable, great taste. Soon it will be famous like fire and it still is as famous as in pre Independence day! Believe me a very few Westerners know about this but this how it all started. The taste of the food and price both remains very resonable till day. Now the place is run by Chitta Babu's grandsons and his Nephew. It is true that we Bengalies learnt to taste the English dishes thru' people like Chitta Ranjan Das and others. My tribute to them.
The all time favourite Mutton and Chicken Stew with toasted pound bread is still very popular and shall remain popular as it has remained for 70 years! Now they have added Chilli chicken, Fried Rice, Cutlets etc to their short menu. It runs only during the day and the crowd is still uncontrolable. They must be serving about 3000 persons during lunch time from 11AM to 4PM( Lunch time?) everyday. Rakhi took our VT friends from Kathmandu, Urvashi, Husband Dibya and brother Arjun to experience this unsual place. My suggestion to anybody visiting Kolkata, to at least visit this place for once. My guarantee you will remember your day. You may carry your own water. A lifetime experience in itself!! In our quest for better Chinese food we have now discovered one of the better eating places in China Town( Tangra), of Kolkata. Yesterday ( Sunday 13.05.07) we went to Shun Li ( Smooth Sailing) Restaurant of Tangra. I got the tip from Mr.Star Zinkojai, Vice President of Holcim Thailand, who is now posted in Kolkata with our Co, ACC LTD. Mr. Star himself is a Chinese from Chiang Mai( Thailand). This place makes Chinese Food for Chinese people so the taste of the food is just Authentic Chinese. We introduced ourselves to Mr.Matthew Chen and his sister Mitchell Wong, and what they suggested, is a marvellous authentic lunch at a very reasonable price. We also become very friendly as we also invited them to ourplace for Bengali treat. Here the food is cooked by Matthew's mother and his sister Mitchell and most of the clients are Chinese people of that area or visiting foreigners. Though Beijing, Hot Wok Village & Big Boss do much better business as their food is almost Indianised Chinese, here they maintain the best of the aroma and taste of North & South China.
Here we tried Chinese Spinach Curry from Hakka region, Choi Sui fish, Vegetable Prawn, Mixed noodle with gravy and plain steamed rice. we could not eat this much and we had to bring back home some of the delicacies. We learnt that the Spinach is imported from Bangkok! It was simply superb and Choi Sui fish was really excellent. We had to take Rice noodle for Munu as she loves noodle, which she ate with Chop Sticks!! Our newly made Chinese friends were simply impressed! we have now decided to visit this place more frequently and take our friends too!! Matthew's mom cooks so well that we have to make it again & again. "Sizzling Sizzlers, Delicious Pork, Chicken and Lamb from the Continent. It's Comics, the new Continental Restaurant, just two minutes from Menoka Cinema. Come savour the best continental cuisine in a unique ambience. " Well we experienced it today( Sunday 26th August) afternoon at lunch, and we can very well confirm that a single word is not untrue!! Well folks and our VT friends our wait for the good Continental food is over. It is now available in Kolkata at a very affordable price with excellent ambience. Its' purely a family joint with good crowd and food is just superb. They serve all types of continental foods which will delight our friends from the continent and the Bengali crowd as well. Bengalies are said to be very adoptive about food when it comes to taste. We also had the opportunity to meet the two young entreprenures Mr.S.Ramani and Mr. Aninda Palit, who are the owners of this place. They realized sometimes back that the city of Kolkata lacks good Continental eatery at affordable price. The two dreamers just put their dream into reality and we ????? Our dreams are realized too. Calcutta has many places which offers continental food but at affordable price? It was a big no. But now our friend from the continent can have the food of their choice at this place. Though it will be slightly far from Sudder Street where most of the foreigners stay, they can take Metro and can get down at Ravindra Sarovar station and then just walk down to Comics. Believe me it will be an wonderful experience, with personal touch from Mr.S.Ramani and Mr.Aninda Palit. They will make sure that you won't go un- satisfied. We also discovered that both Mr.Ramani and Mr.Palit also stay in Golf Green Complex, where we also stay. They also run two ohter places 6 Ballygunge Place and Grand Trunk Road in Kolkata.
We had Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad ( Rs.155 or USD 4.5 with tax), Mixed Grill Sizzler ( Rs.275 or USD 8 with tax) and Munu had Casper's Choice a mocktail ( Rs75 or USD 2 with tax). With time to come we shall try to visit this more often and explore the other dishes as well. We are sure with time this place will attract more and more people who love variety eating. I will also suggest Mr.Ramani and Mr.Palit to make arrangemet for Draught Beer, which goes well with Continental food. On our anniversary we decided to try the latest Chinese Boutique, The Wall( Pan Asian)! It was open only on 10th October, during our festival Durga Puja. It's from the same owners of Comics the speciality continental restaurant and 6, Ballygunge Place, the speciality Bengali restaurant. We were really impressed with the decor, ambience, service. We ordered what we had never tried before either at Mainland China or at Tangra the China Town of Kolkata! We ordered, oAnts Climbing on the Tree: a dish prepared with Minced Lamb flavoured with sweet bean and served on a bed of crispy vermicelli, Lun Woo Yuk See: Fried spicy sliced pork woth wood ear fangs & water chestnut, That Pan Kai: Diced chicken cooked with freshly ground pepper and Shanghai Fried rice: The potios were very good compared to the priced but the cooking style and the taste was far behind than what we expected. Remember we are having Chinese food for the last 35/40 years and I had the opportunity to taste Chinese in almost all the 200 restaurant run by the Chinese living in Kolkata and in all star hotels. I can be termed as a Chinese Food Expert. I feel tastewise & Authenticitywise Mainland China is far far ahead of every restaurants, Chinese or Non Chinese! The Wall will have to work hard to catch up, only decor is not going to help them. Normally I love to try all the food at any foodstall. But in India I was afraid of getting sick. Another problem was, that I did not want to eat in public in India, when the people around did not have anything to eat for most of the day. I loved the nice vegetarian restaurants. I am not a vegetarian, but in India vegetarian meals are with a lot of vegetables and lentils. It is spicy and very very good. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalComparison: least expensive
