As I have mentioned in my several tips the City Of Kolkata is changing very fast with very positive attitude! The positive attitude includes people behaviour also. With the changing scenario the latest addition is South Ciy Shopping Mall. You get everything you desire. Built in the pattern of American shopping malls, it is the largest shopping mall in India and built inside the city. The shops are right from grocery ( Spencers) to Swaroski crystals. There is even a Dollar shop, where you can buy American goods at a bargain price! It also has 6 cinema halls,10 restaurants, fast food counters, many escalators, a parking space to house 1300 cars! The speciality restaurant Mainland China has also opened their second restaurant there. The whole place is air conditioned. The South City will have 1700 apartments in 4, 35 floored buildings and expected to open very soon ( the apartments) This place is surely going to change or standard of living. This place is with in one kilometer from our residence. We took our American VT guest from Long Beach, California, Sonia and her father Prof. M.K.Das to visit this place last Sunday 3rd Feb. We also dined at the latest Mainland China! Leave a Comment Theme: Department StoreAddress: Prince Anwar Shah Road, Kolkata.

The 19th Century Britishers of Calcutta felt they do not have a proper market of their own British gentry in Calcutta. So they should have a proper market just in the style of London markets ( super markets). The then British gentry appealed to The Calcutta Municipal corpn and they ordered East India Railway company to execute a market in 1873. It was given Gothic Architechtural shape by the renowned British architect Mr. R.Bayney. The market was formally opened only for British or white Europeans on 1st January' 1874. All the famous shops and company of London opened their stores here, such as Cuthbertson & Harper and so on. In 1903 it was named after Sir Stuart Hogg, who was then chairman of Calcutta Corporation. Till the begining of World warII the place remained reserved only for whites, natives or the Bengalies were not allowed. At the end of the war they felt they are loosing grip over the city and then it was opened to local rich & wealthy people. This place is a Landmark in Kolkata city and still remains very popular among the well to do Bengalies despite heat & smell. The market used to be the first organised supermarket in whole of Asia, with all kinds of shops selling from shoes, dress, vegetables, florist, jewellery, Bakery, Grocery & livestock products. It still remains till date as it was before but looks very dirty , smelly & hot. There is no airconditioning except the shops. One part of New Market was devastated by fire in 1985 then it was rebuilt but this side lacks that old charm. Since, this is a Heritage place, it should be rebuilt with frontage remaining the same. A little more cleaning of the place will make the place worth spending time. Now this place also has Simpark an under ground airconditioned parking system, you can leave your car for Rs.30/- an hour.
Almost anything! Try it here what you dont' get is fancy shopping malls or at the next door Grocer ! Be it the chocked drain pipe cleaner or that best quality Lamb Chops cut or your favourite Beef Spare Ribs ! Just give it a try.
