I have never touched this grand activity of the city, I just don't know why! May be I don't gamble, that's why! The Kolkata has two centuries old Royal Calcutta Turf Club, here in the heart of the city where Horse Racing and Derby takes place. The whole winter season is famous for Derby races.
However, on 1st January'2013 , we went there and had a ring side view of Horse Racing and very close view of starting point. The starting point area is usually banned for anyone who is not a horse owner , trainer or employee of the turf club, but we were guests of a high level dignitary of Kolkata( I am not taking his name for obvious reasons) and we had no interests in betting or punting, may be I was trusted. I was allowed to take pictures, and I took plenty of them in the few minutes we were there!
It was really great opportunity for me, as I had never seen Derby horses from so close distance!
Please enjoy the tip. The Race season is from November to March and Derby held from Christmas to 1st week of the year! I really need to get more knowledge on this sports!

It was great day with action packed fun filled program. We gave them presentation on our web based Lakshya Program and as well as complete range of products available on Lakshya Redeemption was displayed in adjoining boat airconditioned hall. The product range was from Laptop, Cameras, LCD TV, Sony Handicam, washing machines, Gold Coins, jewellery and so on.... We also made arrangements of instant redeemption of Lakshya points through wireless internet if someone wished to burn his points earned in liew of gift. Some people actually did burn their points on board.
Our Regional Sales Head, also announced our role in the great national disaster' North Bihar Floods' and how we are helping them to rehabilitate apart from our donation of one day's salary, food camps at 3 places to feed 5000 people every day. He also asked our dealers to come forward and lend a helping hand, which received overwhelming response from all the participating dealers.

It was a great event with Senior Vice President ( Regional Sales Head) Mr.Agnihotri participating amongst us and the dealer and spent full 6 hours with our team. It was a great gesture from Mr.Agnihotri, who took out time only to participate in our event and encourage us to do better!

Recently on 4th September, we organised Hilsa Festival for our dealers of Kolkata region. We hired two boats, joined them and sailed for 6 hrs from 3PM to 9PM. Hilsa fish is a favourite dish of Bengalies and generally savoured in monsoon only. There were three preparations of Hilsa fish besides several other dishes. We also organised orchestra for three hours with singers belting out melodious songs and we danced to their tunes ( see video, I am trying to load it for the last several days) It was great event and the singers were superb. One boat has airconditioned conference hall, which we used for product display of our Lakshya Program,( where dealer earns and burns points like air travel or credit card points, which is fully redeemable) and press conference by our Regional Sales Head, Mr.V.K.Agnihotri.
The day was complete with torrential rains and the program was big hit!!!

As you walk around you'll no doubt encounter locals playing small cricket games and people taking picnics. The whole area is home to many of Kolkata's sports clubs and other institutions that date from the time of the British Raj. In fact, many of them are the oldest outside of the British Isles.

The Science City in Calcutta is the only of its kind not only in India, but also in this part of the world. It tells about the principles of science in a very attractive and simple manner. However, you don't need to be from the science stream to visit the park. It is a great place for all, especially the children. You can take a ride in the Rope way, go to the Space Theatre or take a ride in the toy train. Please DON'T MISS THE EVOLUTION PARK AND THE SPACE THEATRE! THEY ARE SIMPLY AWESOME!
Equipment: Come comfortably without much to carry in your hands.

On every Saturday/Sunday and on other Holidays West Bengal Tourism Corpn. organises River Cruise on the Ganges with Musical sortie. Well it is primarily a joy ride kind of thing for about one hour cruise. They allow soft drink, tea / coffee and very good music on board. There is a live band belts out popular Indian numbers. They also invite the guests to dance and sing with them. It is quite relaxing and enjoyable program, for about an hour. They take you from Millenium Park , Fairly Place Jetty to about Khidderpore Dockyard and back. The fare is very cheap Rs. 50/- per head, as compared to same type of program in Goa for Rs.150/- ( US$3) . Hard drink is not allowed as this is sponsored by the local Marxist govt.
programwise, this is much behind what you get to see in Goa, They show you folk dance of Goa and it runs daily. May be someday they will make their program better. But today the singers are much better than that of Goa singers.

Beat the heat continues. Apart from offering water rides they also allow you to invite your friends for parties, cocktails and also they have conference hall and dining facility. They are now encouraging the corporates to organize their dealers, resellers, even officers meet there. We too have taken our dealers and officers with family for outing. I tell you it's a good outing there with family. You be in the water for whole day, have fun and relax with family. But Aquatica is not the only one offers such facility, there a few places offer such facility.

For a large city like Kolkata it is very difficult to find recreation of your choice at resonable and affordable price. This city has grown by leaps and bounds abour 1096 Sq.Km and population 138 Million. so one can guess arranging space and entertainment is avery very difficult job. we have parks, swiming pools, lakes but all inadequate for a population of this size. Then travel time and mode of travel comes in consideration. However Calcutta is managing the show.
There are a few entertainment/ water parks have come up recently in Kolkata offering good fun at resonable price. Aquatica is one of them we frequent, because my daughter loves the dogs and the rides there. On Sundays and other holidays they also offer DJ show with professional dancers on their Wave Pool for the crowd to dance. It is estimated about 4-500 people throng there on Sunday. Good fun and way to Beat the Heat.

The Outram Ghat in Calcutta is one of the most prefered spots for relaxation after a hectic day. It is situated near Fort William at the banks of the River Ganga(also called Hooghly). People usually visit this spot in the afternoon, between 4pm. to 7pm. It is truly a nice place as you can see the river flowing by, the boats sailing in the river as well as some of them anchored to the shore. On either sides you can see the two huge bridges - The Howrah Bridge on the right and The Vidyasagar Setu on the left. The Vidyasagar Setu is the largest cable-styled bridge in Asia.
The cool breeze that blows seems to soothe the mind and body. You can also take a ride in a steamer or a simple boat. The skyline of the shore can be seen while you are in the boat. You can see the Secretariat Building, The High Court, The LIC Building and others (click on the picture to enlarge it and get a clear view).
It is going to be an experience that you will never forget!
Equipment: Do not take any baggage or anything that you will have to carry in your hands, except a bottle of drinking water and a camera. I would prefer that you wear light clothes while visiting the spot.
If you are a foreign tourist contact the travel desk of your hotel to visit this location. You can either take your own vehicle or a cab.
