Gurudev Ravindra Nath Tagore started this Rural Fair about 100 years back. The prime attraction of this fair is Baul Songs. It is said it comes directly from the heart of Rural Bengal. A Baul singer is who has left all earthly bonds and have devoted himself to the God( Lord Krishna).
Along with the Baul songs the Village fair now attracts people across the globe, who come to witness the rural Bengal and the Rural culture.
You need to find beauty even from the non significant place. You take a look at the photo of the house and you tend to forget. But just wait and take a close second look at the house. what do you see? A beautiful house built with Mud and polished with mud. You try yoorself, you will never be able to make it. The Santhal tribe of Bengal and Bihar/Jharkhand have been douing it for ages.
How do you make a tip on rural Bengal? I felt whatever I saw with my own eyes and felt it is beautiful, I think I should post it in my tips. Because after talking to many people I am convinced that not everybody is really interested in beautiful buildings and sea beaches. One of the most beautiful scenario of Rural Bengal is its natural waterbodies, migratory birds of various types. I am posting some of the pictures taken near Asansol of Migratory Birds. These are mostly Teals and Ducks of Central Asian origin. enjoy!!!!
I will post more photos later!!
since, I have promised to unfurl the various facets of Beautiful Rural Bengal, I will slowly show the real beauty I have captured in the past in various places. Bengal has many locations with rivers, natural lakes, hillocks, streams, fountains, Natural Hot springs and what not? I will slowly bring them in my page one by on as I have seen them. Just wait.........
As said in the previous tip life in Sunderbans is extremely difficult for its inhabitants. There is no road, electricity, transport, employment. People live in much adversity. We may not even survive for a few days out there with out our support system but life goes on. There is hardly any cultivable land out there but they sometimes grow some rice as the Agriculture is totally dependant on rains. The Saline water of the rivers can not be used, either to drink or for Agriculture. The living conditions are also very difficult. Please have a close look at the photographs.
The villages of Sunderbans continued...I put here some photos how do they travel, how do they earn living, what is their home like. They live far from the city and travel only by boat as there is no road in Suderbans only Salty Rivers and Creeks. Have a look.
When talking about Rural Bengal, how can one ignore the Beauty of Sunderbans. It is the largest delta of the world and at the sametime it is most beautiful and Most Dangerous place to live. Fortunately, this is part of Bengal and we are very proud of it. I the last few years Eco- tourism has developed and it has helped a lot the local inhabitants to improve their economy. But what requires, is full time source of earning for it's people. The Nature will continue as it is but the condition of the people of Sunderbans has to change. They live in highly dangerous condition. In the land with wild animals and in the water with water predators, like Sharks, Crocodiles and poisnous snakes.
There is no electricity, no potable water to drink, no proper food, but life goes on for the inhabitants who survives on the forest products like honey, wood, wild berries( For Medicine), and ofcourse fish. Fish is the major source of their earning and food.
I had the opportunity to visit Sunderbans on 25/26th December 2004. I am utilizing the photographs taken then to build this page and the tips.
These pictures were taken inn 2004 in South Bengal Tribal Land. they also feature in my Bankura page. This is just to show how people in Rural Bengal lives. This area is Tribal Land, with hillocks, Thachets. Look at the women carrying fire wood on their head for their daily use. Independence for them? Well it really is not for them it is continuing since ages to arrange for food and shelter. The Mud house too is built by them in their own hands.
I will put some more later.
to be continued................................
Life has always been very difficult for Rural people. They have been totally dependant on Agriculture for livelihood. The British Rulers never tried to do anything for the Ruralite except for exploitation. And after Independence, our Indian Rulers neglected them to the core, with no industry, no electricity, no regular source for employment, life for the villagers is very difficult. They work ( both Men & women), whole day to earn two square meals for them. Look at the couple in the main picture, cultivating Prawn seeds, to be grown and sold to bigger farmers. I asked them what is their daily income by working 12/14 hours. You will be shocked to learn it is only about a Dollar!!! Our govt. must do something to introduce some source of employment in villages.
The other photograph showing a young couple ( lovers) from better family with Mobile phone and Motor bike. What a contrast! The other couple dont even have proper cloth to cover themselves.
Recently we had the opportunity to attend a Moslem Marriage in Rural Bengal. The place is called Mogra Hat. Here are some photographs, of that family. The grrom is the Brother in Law of our dealer of Usthi, Mr.Monjoor Hossein. As I mentionedthat the Rural Bengal is changing and the literacy rate is very high. The groom is a school teacher, with honours in English!!
In the next picture, his father the old man with beard, he is the retired Principal of Mogra Hat Anglo Muslim High School ( established in 1848). He is double Masters in English and History from Calcutta university. All the family members of Monjoor Hossein are highly educated. See pictures.
They too add to the flavour of Rural Bengal. Dont' they?
Since when I have taken the habit of carrying a camera with me, I have been taking pictures of many things, some significant and many insignificant. Later I realized that those photos are not at all insignificant, they are personifying the Mother Earth and her various facets from various angles. Many of us do not like rains and rural part which is muddy, no electric, no purified water, no good restaurant, and many no... s. But at the same time the Farmer who lives in the rural area is devoid of pleasure of city life, welcomes the rains, Mud, water, as because he has to cultivate and produce crops!! You know for whom? Yes it is for us .......... to survive. In India the farming is still based on Rains.... we still have miles to go. We have developed, but the rains required. So enjoy the rains!!!
The pond, the fish and the rustic spectators, all are part of Rural Bengal. Look at the crowd, even an insignificant event like pond fishing drew so much crowd.
These pictures were taken at Gaighata, near Bangladesh border town. I got the idea of Building the Page on rural Bengal here only.
These pictures were taken during our pond fishing trip to Usthi area of South 24pgs district, about 60kms from Calcutta. Pond, Hamlets, rustic people. There is one wonderful thing in this village, despite extreme poverty the literacy rate is 100%. Many boys and girls not only have university education but are working in many places as doctors,Engineers & teachers!! Is not that a wonderful thing. Their economy is bound to change in few years time.
We went fishing in the pond owned by the descendants of Dr.Nilratan Sircar ( The founder member of Calcutta medical college)
On 3oth July we also went Pond fishing to Usthi near Diamond Harbour. This time our host was Mr. manzoor Hossein and his family. He is one of our largest Exclusive dealer of the place and excellent host. We thank him and his wife for ibnvintig us on a rainey Sunday.
Fishing is one of my hobies! I keep telling my friends that I am going pond fishing on this Sunday and they keep asking as how it is done. So I am trying to build a tip on how Pond fishing is done. This is same as River or Sea fishing, with only differnce the baits as the fishes are smaller and they like sweet thing like loaf, flour, earth worms, ant eggs etc as baits. Beside this you will have to lure the fishes to your baits, so you need to arrange that too, by organising " Lure baits". In the market several Lure Baits are available, such as formanted Rice, Black- Gram Paste, or any thing formanted ( organic food). It's simple to make but messy.
And the fishes!!! they are mostly Carps, gold, silver, cat and so on. There are many small / medium and large ponds in and around Calcutta. Where they offer angling for some fee ranging Rs100 to Rs500/- ( 10USD). If the catch is good then enjoyment doubles. But I have been going to my friend's ponds or people known to them as we can also relax and spend sometime with frinds.
Yesterday, we went to Gaighata a place near Bangladesh Border for pond fishing with our family. Mr.Kalipada Dey was our host this time. He is one of our dealers' and a fine gentleman with very large heart. His entire family is great host, his wife, daughter, his brother, his wife and their children are really lovable character. We shall go again they are so good.
We stayed at the Grand for a week while vacationing in India in the fall of last year and found this...more
