There are buses from Kolkata (Babu Ghat) to reach Sonakhali, which is about a 2 hours way. Upon reaching Sonakhali, one would have to hire a private boat to get into the Sunderbans (Gosaba) Cycle Rickshaws then can be hired for further transport..
Many different types of boat are available, and used by the villagers to get around from village to village.
Special Permits are required to enter. Contact the West Bengal Tourism Dept for further information and permit

As I have stated previously, the Sunderbans are not easy to get to. There is a way that one cango independently, but it sounded too complicated for us. We chose to go on the tour, and it was perfectly organized. A very comfortable air-conditioned bus takes you down to a village called Sonakhali (2 hours). From Sonakhali, you transfer to a boat, and it is a two hour boat-ride to the camp. All this sounds like hard work- but I really think that the getting there and back was part of the fun.
The bus is large and it goes hell-for-leather. Best NOT to watch the roads. But the scenery along the way is fantastic. West Bengal is so green. And it is rural, so everything is natural and unspoiled. Lots of water everywhere, and rice paddies in the fields. Very picturesque.
The boat trip to the camp was an absolute pleasure. Gave us time to relax, and appreciate the immense and vast area that is the Sunderbans. The water id wide.
