Heritage Hot Spots

by Donna_in_India

I would be hard pressed to pick my top 3 or even top 5 favorite Heritage sights in India but the following would all definitely make my list.Taj Mahal, Agra: There are no words to describe the Taj Mahal. It will take your breath away. It is a must, must see in India.Ajanta-Ellora Caves, Aurangabad/Maharashtra: Ellora's rock temples and monasteries are spectacular; murals are found in five of its 30+ caves (Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain). Ajanta's rock-cut caves span 800 years and are all Buddhist caves. The frescoes are amazing.Agra Fort, Agra: Beautiful red sandstone fort. The first of the forts built in a new style of Mughal architecture. Colorful history spanning several generations of the Mughal dynasty. Old Delhi: Museums and mosques in a maze of streets that form Old Delhi.Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: Steam-powered, narrow-gauge railway also known as the Toy Train. The tracks rise -...

Delhi - Raj Gat

by RollingOkie

This is where Mahatma Ghandi was cremated after he was assassinated in 1948. In the Hindu culture, cremation is the normal way to deal with a person's body after they expire. The area around the site has been turned into a large park. I'm not sure what happened to his ashes. Someone told me that they were scattered from an airplane across the country of India. That sounds appropriate.

Delhi - Take a Tour

by RollingOkie

Yeah, that's my tour bus and a great tour bus it was. The City of Delhi puts on a an excellent tour at a really great price. The cost was 300 rupees ($7) for and all day tour. What a bargain! Hey, the fun I had with the people on the tour was worth the $7.

Delhi - Red Fort

by RollingOkie

It's the Red Fort in Delhi. It was completed in the middle of the 17th century and is quite imposing. In the 350 years since it was built it has served three main entities. First, the Mughal emperors who lived in the fort until the British came and declared war. Second, the British who came and tore down a lot of the interior of the fort to make room for English style barracks and third, the Republic of India, who eventually turned into the tourist trap is is today. Note that it is a tourist trap well worth entering. I did so and I'm glad I went. It is a walled fort on a river and the circumference of the wall is over one mile. The wall has a height that ranges from 50 feet to about 100 feet high. Remember, this baby is made out of red sandstone. It's one big mutha...

Pangong Lake, Ladakh

by MalenaN

Pangong Lake is a beautiful lake situated at an altitude of 4350 metres. The water is cold and clear and shift in blue and green colours. The lake is surrounded by bare mountains, some with snow on the tops even during the summer months. The water in Pangong Lake is brackish so it makes it the highest situated lake with salt water. Pangong means extensive concavity and it is a 134 kilometre long lake, but it is only 5 kilometres wide at the widest points. More than 60% of the lake is situated in Tibet. You can arrange for a daytrip to Pangong Lake from most travel companies in Leh. But I had to visit many before I fond one who had other people to share the price with on the same day I wanted to go. As for other tours there is a fixed price for Pangong Lake. There is one price for the first stop by the lake and if you want to go to the village 7km away along the lake it is a bit more...

Kozhikode (Callicut)

by PierreZA

This delightful town may not have many sights for the traveler, but is a very pleasant place to spend a few days. It has the typical Keralan lifestyle.Vasco da Gama landed here during the late 1400's. You have to visit 'Sweet Meat Street', where you can buy wonderful sweet treats and Keralan banana chips. If possible, visit C V N KALARI, where you can watch the martial art Kalarippayattu. It is best to make an appointment before pitching. I attended a training session, which was a very interesting experience.Take a stroll along Kozhikode Beach just before sunset.

Chang La

by MalenaN

When you go to Pangong Lake you will go over Chang La, which is a high pass on 5360 metres. Chang La is said to be the third highest motorable pass in the world, but as the Chinese are building roads over several high passes I’m not sure this is true anymore. It is at least one of the highest motorable passes in the world. At Chang La the Indian army has got first aid facilities and they also serves tea for free. There is also a temple at Chang La. This temple is dedicated to the sadhu Changla Baba and it is the sadhu the pass is named after. You should not travel over Chang La and go to Pangong Lake on your first day in Leh. Especially if you have flown in to Leh it is advised to stay in Leh for three days to rest and acclimatise to high altitude. There is a big risk that you get altitude sickness if you travel there without acclimatisation.

Jaipur

by MalenaN

Jaipur, called both the City of Victory and the Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan. Many tourists come here every year. Some are doing the Golden Triangle, travelling between Delhi - Agra - Jaipur - Delhi and will not visit other parts of Rajasthan. For others this is the gateway to explore more of Rajasthan.Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, who ruled between 1699 - 1744. He needed a new capital as the former capital, Amber, couldn’t take the growing population and there was a scarcity of water. The Maharaja, together with architects, planed the city in a grid system with nine rectangular city sectors, based on ancient Hindu architecture. The whole city was painted pink by Sawai Ram Singh in 1853 to welcome the Prince of Wales who was coming on visit. Pink represents hospitality. And since then the buildings in the Old City has maintained the pink colour....

City Palace, Jaipur

by MalenaN

The City Palace in Jaipur is a huge complex of buildings and courtyards. Construction was begun in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh who built the outer wall. Succeeding rulers have then done additions through the years until the beginning of the 20th century. After entering through the main gate, Virendra Pol, you will first come to Mubarak Mahal, a Palace used for receiving guests. The Mubarak Mahal now houses the Museum of Textile and Costume Museum. Inside the City Palace you will see several other museums, for example there is a Carriage Museum , an Armoury and an Art Gallery. From Mubarak Mahal you walk through a beautiful gate, Rajendra Pol, to the next courtyard. In the middle of that courtyard is Diwan-I-khas, a private audience hall where you can see two big silver urns, 1.6m tall. They are said to be the biggest silver objects in the world. The urns were used by Maharaja Sawai...
