Aurangabad

by MalenaN

Aurangabad is a city with about 1 million inhabitants in the north part of Maharashtra. It is a dusty city with lots of traffic, but it is anyway a good base for exploring the caves in Ajanta and Ellora and the fort in Daulatabad.Daulatabad was founded in 1610 and the city got its name from the Moghal Emperor Aurangazeb who made it his capital in 1653. Aurangabad is supposed to mean Built by the throne. But in 1763 the capital was moved to Hyderabad and the glory of Aurangabad was diminished significantly. It is easy to reach Aurangabad. There is an airport and a railway station ( I left by plane and arrived by train from Mumbai). And many major roads lead to Aurangabad.

Elephanta Island, Mumbai

by MalenaN

Elephanta Island is situated about 10 km northeast of Gateway of India. The island is about 1050 hectares big and has a population of 1600 inhabitants. Elephanta Island is famous for the rock cut Hindu temples and has been an Unesco World Heritage Site since 1987. In the main cave you can see impressive stone carvings; statues, shrines and pillars. The temples were created in AD 450 - 750. At that time the island was known as Gharapuri, which means the town of Ghari priests, or is it place of caves. Well. I have come across both meanings and don’t know which is the correct one. In 1534, when the Portuguese came they saw a big stone elephant near the shore of the island and thus renamed it Elephanta Island. This statue can now be seen in Jijamata Garden in Mumbai (a place which I didn’t visit). If you have visited Ajanta and Ellora and don’t have too much time in Mumbai I don’t think it is...

Arambol, Goa

by MalenaN

I visited Arambol during the monsoon season when most restaurants, shops and accommodations are closed, when the sea currents are strong and the red flag is permanent on the beach. It was very quiet.Arambol is a village in north Goa, 32 km from Mapusa. There are a few hundred local inhabitants in the village and many of them work with tourism or fishing. There are no big hotel complexes in Arambol, but mostly smaller budget accommodations. Thus it is a popular place with travellers during the tourist season., but I have also heard there are more bigger groups coming here. When I visited it was quiet but at other times you can try paragliding in Arambol and go on boat excursions. There are also sometimes parties, but since 2007 there is a law that no loud music is allowed to be played after 22.00. I think this is valid for all Goa.The long sandy beach in Arambol is beautiful and stretches...

Bangalore and surroundings

by travellingtechie

Bangalore as such does not have many places of tourist interest but there definitely are many quite near to it. One can go to Mysore to see the historic sites of the reign of Tipu Sultan. Mysore is about 3 hours from Bangalore by road. An overnight trip takes u to Ooty (a hill station) and Pondycherry (a sea side French style town). Another overnight road trip and you reach the Jog Falls from Bangalore. There is a place called Sivasamudram which is also quite close to Bangalore, probably only a couple of hours, which has beautiful waterfalls. So it depends on what you want to see and are interested in. The city itself may not be a big tourist attractions but it can definitely be used as a launching pad for trips to other more popular tourist attractions!Regards.Travellingtechie!

Sugarcane drink

by smirnofforiginal

Along the roadside and in a lot of the villages you'll see hand turned machines and piles of sugarcane. It's worth stopping and having a try. It is surprisingly unsweet. The sugarcane is rolled throught the machine which is not unlike an old, Victorian clothes mangle. The liquid is squeezed out. The cane is then re-rolled, this time with a small sweet lime added. The liquid is then strained and voila - it is ready for drinking.NB. If you can make yourself understood it is best to request this drink withOUT ice. I am sure it taste nicer if it is really cold but... I decided I would rather save my stomach than find out!

Visit Leopold's Bar in homage to Shantaram

by GitaP

Leopald's Bar is the place to seek a break from the madness of Colaba. Immortalised forever in the stunning world No 1 best seller, Shantaram, the bar delivers in every way. We went upstairs, kicked off our shoes, stretched aching legs and drank numerous ice cold Kingfisher beers while speculating about whether there were any real life Mumbai drug lords amongst the very international crowd.

Abhaneri - Chand Baoli

by smirnofforiginal

the remote village of Abhaneri is 100km from Jaipur and is most definitely worth going to. If you do not have your own transport it is a bit of a pain to get to but the sight you will behold will make your jaw drop!I had taken my driver, Mahavir Yadav to the long forgotten Agrassen ki Baoli in Delhi and taking me to Abhaneri was his treat and surprise. It is simply astonishing. An absolutely outstanding, geometric site!Baolis are step wells (the water can be reached by going down the steps) and the steps here zig and zag around in a most impressive manner.Entrance was free but we felt obliged to pay the local "guide" to take us around. He did not give us much historical information but was most informative about the statues that were strewn about the place.I did a bit of research and there really is not a lot of information about it. I did find out that It was built in the 9th century,...
