In DELHI - Lodhi Gardens & Tombs

by lynnehamman

Lodhi Gardens is haven of peace and tranquilliity.Tall trees give shade, and the lawns are green and well trimmed. We walk here a lot on our visits to Delhi- the gardens have always been clean and well kept. Like Central Park in New York, Delhi dwellers use this public space. There were very few tourist while we were there.People were jogging, doing yoga or just sitting under the trees, having a picnic. There are some monuments and tombs within the Gardens, the most interesting being the tomb of Mohamed Shah.Area surrounding Lodhi Gardens is one of the most upscale residential areas in Delhi. White Lutyens Bungalows and mansions stand on the wide tree-lined roads. We stayed at a Guest House on Prithviraj Rd, and admired the beautiful homes along this wide avenue.. It is the chosen area for Embassies, an ex-president and Government buildings. I love this photo of Lodhi Gardens so much- it...

Wildlife Hot Spots

by Donna_in_India

Seeing a tiger in the jungles of India will leave you with memories for a lifetime. But go with the realization that you may not see a tiger so you will be able to enjoy the other wonderful wildlife. Sadly, tigers are still poached and the number of tigers left in India continues to decline. I have been to 3 national parks: Bandhavgarh, Nagarhole, and Ranthambhore. Since I saw tigers in Bandhavgarh, it is my favorite place. Nagarhole was just as wonderful with its majestic elephants. I was honestly a little disappointed with Ranthambhore, although we did see a jackal and a very cool hyena! If you are lucky enough to see a tiger, put the camera down for a little while and ENJOY THE MOMENT!! Don't forget your binoculars. The best time to go is as close to summer as you can tolerate the heat (April-May). Tigers are likely to be found around the watering holes. Most parks are closed during...

Spa Hot Spots

by Donna_in_India

I absolutely recommend having a massage/spa treatment (or several) while in India. Almost all hair salons offer services - most are very inexpensive. Of course, the higher end hotels offer them as well, along with higher end prices. In places like Goa, you can have a very inexpensive massage on the beach. A good massage should run about RS 1000 although you can find places that are less expensive along with places that are 5 times as much.Ayurvedic massages are very popular but if you think you might find oil continuously being dripped on your forehead annoying, I'd skip it(!). If you do go for it, make sure not to wear contacts. The spas listed below are famous spas so if you are looking for a special treat you may want to pamper yourself at one of these places. Some also offer meditation and yoga.A spa treatment is the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate after a hectic day in...

Spiritual Hot Spots

by Donna_in_India

Temples, mosques, churches....there are literally thousands of spiritual destinations in India. Unless you are going on a pilgrimage, it's likely that you will see the main religious places in a particular city. Don't try to see all the temples, mosques, or churches. Select a few of the more special or more unusual ones - and there are some really spectacular ones - some of which are listed below. (Many of my favorites are listed here, but I have many more!)Please be respectful when going into any place of worship: dress properly, remove your shoes, cover your head, don't take photos if not permitted, and don't take photos of worshippers anywhere. Golden Temple, Amritsar: The most sacred place for Sikhs. This complex is just spectacular - a not-to-be-missed place. The Golden Temple and its reflection in the water will take your breathe away. A great time to visit is Baisakhi (in April) -...

Beach Hot Spots

by Donna_in_India

The beaches of Goa are probably the most well-known in India but there are several other beautiful beaches. Don't forget to use sun-protection and watch the hours between 12 and 2 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest. Also, be aware of undercurrents! Some special beaches include:Kalpeni, Lakshwadeep: Shallow waters and colorful marine life in a beautiful lagoon, very laidback! Nearest airprot is Agatti, then day trip to Kalpeni. (January to beginning of May)Karwar, Karnataka: Unspoiled beach. Enjoy diving and snorkeling. Nearest airport is Goa. (Between July and February, monsoons are remarkable)Mahe, Pondicherry: Clean, golden sands, azure blue waters, not yet overrun by tourists. Nearest airport is Kozhikode. (September to February)Mandvi, Gujarat: 6 km long, white sand, turquoise sea. Water sports: water scooters, water skiing, surfing, parasailing, speed boat rides. Teeming with...

Khajaraho look beyond the obvious

by Buckz

Roll up Roll up get you laughs from the people in the cheap seats. and no, if you look again it's obvious he isn't hanging upside down. Khajuraho is famous for erotic carvings, and lots of them. But there is more to it. Look at the faces, especially of the servants and helpers, some are having a sneaky peak at their masters, some are scowling that they have been overlooked- every person is at something....

Weather in India in November and places to see...

by Odinnthor

It appears that you will have quite a bit of time in India, so I expect that you will run into varying temperatures. The further up north the cooler it gets. Monsoon season will be over so no rain expected. Of course the further south the warmer it gets. If you go north to Kashmir, try to stay on the houseboats in Srinagar. Be sure to take a boatride on Lake Dhal, very early in the morning, - it is surreal. You will likely go to or through Delhi, and from there to Agra for the Taj Mahal, - try to include Kahjuraho and see the temples with their somewhat unusual stonecarvings and sculptures. Varanasi, also known as Benares, is a must, to experience the Ganges river. Try to get a boad ride on the river and you will see why the river is so revered amongst the Hindus. Number of other places to visit like Aurangabhad, for their magnificent palaces carved into solid rock. Udaipur, where you...

Varanasi with respect

by Buckz

It is difficult to see Varanasi's key attraction without feeling like a voyeur. Tourists go to Varanasi to see funerals, and other religious rites. You will see people meditating, washin gin the river, swimming, and you may see cremations. If you do ast as you would like a tourist to act if they stumbled upon a family funeral of your family. As a word of warning, the Ganges in Varanasi is polluted beyond belief, 1000s of times more pollluted that the max allowable in swimming pools in Europe.

Taj Mahal The obvious start

by Buckz

This is probably the most recognisable building on the Planet. The romantic story of its creation only adds to the magic. It is worth taking plenty of time over, it is wonderful. While there, listen in on a few guided tours, some are great, some are hopeless (be sure to read up on the Taj before you go), all are entertaining. It looks good from afar, but you also have to go right up close to see the level of detail involved. It has a darker side- what happened to the artisans afterwards, what happened to Shah Jahan afterwards, get the background.
