Experience with nature

by jsteji

In addition to everybody's suggestions, I go to Jaipur every year for the last 30 yrs. I just returned from Jaipur last week. There is new park which has opened in the last year. Kapur Chand Kulish Samitri Van (or Park). It is awesome if you like walking and like biodiversity. Diversity of plants, birds, animals, rocks, ponds, hills, etc. Nobody knows about it or its location, so you really have to spell the location on directions. My wife and I would walk for a couple of hours every morning. You can walk or jog. There are sunken paths, ponds, I saw a new bird or a plant every day. The birds and little animals are not afraid of humans. There are rock paved paths which have side treks and then reunite with main paths going up or down and a hill. You could walk a different path every day. Oh! and don't forget your camera. It is a must see site if you like nature. It was so relaxing to...

TAJ MAHAL

by lynnehamman

I HAVE ALSO PLACED THIS TIP IN MY AGRA PAGE- but I think that it also needs to be with INDIA TIPS. No visit to India would really be complete without visiting this famous monument to love.So much has been said and written about the Taj Mahal. It is one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. Despite its familiarity, the beauty took my breath away. I wondered what kind of love this was- what kind of man would create such perfection. The domes glow and turn different shades, reflecting the light.Even on the grey, overcast day that we visited,it seemed to shimmer.Shah Jehan was a passionate man.Only passion and the grief that aged him overnight could have inspired him to build the most perfectly flawless architechural creation in the world. After the death of Mumtaz at the age of 39, the Shah was inconsolable. The court went into mourning for two years. A memorial to his beloved...

Palolem. The beautiful palm beach of GOA.

by TheView

A nice place to relax do nothing absolutely nothing! The beach at Palolem in the south of Goa has a wonderful beach offering you nice simple beach huts (bamboo, western toilet, shower, double bed and mosquito net) at a low prices from 300 -1000 rupees pr. hut a night for the more luxurious ones. The beach offers plenty of food and drinking options and alcohol is readily available at fair prices. (the best restaurant you find as the first one, to the left of the only road leading down to the beach. The seafood here is a must) I stayed at Marron beach resort a luxurious version of a beach hut you find in the far south end of the beach, I can only recommend it.

Forts, and Palaces- Colourful Rajasthan

by lynnehamman

Rajasthan has dozens of mighty forts, palaces and castles dotted around the state. Some are situated in the cities, and some are outside of city limits. The three most impressive forts are Meharagarh Fort-(Jaipur,) Jaisalmer Fort is the oldest living fort-(Jaisalmer), and Chittorgarh Fort. Chittorgarh can be visited on a day trip from Udaipur. These above forts have been invaded and conquered -then re-conquered over the centuries, and all have a fascinating history. ( I have given details of forts in my various Indian cities pages)They are all huge, and some have steep ascents- so wear good walking shoes- and a hat.Other Forts of great historical value in Rajasthan are Kumbalgarh Fort (which has the 2nd longest wall after the Great Wall in China) near Udaipur, and Ranthambore Fort. Bundi Palace is very impressive, and has well preserved hand painted scenes on the inner walls.Palaces are...

Hegglers, beggers and busy streets..but wonderful

by nodude

I just returned from a 12 day trip to India and Nepal. I visited Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. A fascinating country with so much diversity and heritage and a very interesting history. I was fascinated by the history og the Mughal empire and the Maharajas of Rajasthan. You will be heggled by street vendors like there is no tomorrow. My advice: be deaf and blind to them, they won't bother you. Also when they ask where are you from, come up with a poor country, so they will leave you alone. If you say you are from America or Europe, they will heggle you to deah until you buy. Tha is of course if you can say you are from Africa and you don't look chinese. These kids are very smart and speak several languages (they beg in several languages :)Bargain for the price. Never pay what they ask, always vut it by at least 50 or 75%. Most of what they sell is trinkets anyway. Otherwise, enjoy this...

Stop to catch your breath and try a coconut

by DSwede

Commonly at road-side stands and tourist stops, they sell fresh coconut. In the rush of a day, it is good to take a brief stop to catch your breath. In the heat of the sun, a cool refreshing cup of natural coconut milk is a good pick-me-up.Vendors will have a stack of coconuts, and will simply take a knife, chop open a small hole in the top, insert a straw, and voila, instant treat.Cost will be between 5~10 rupees typically.
