The Stone Kamasutra in Khajuraho

by TheView

The temples is the most elaborately decorated I have ever seen. Displaying the one magnificent stone carving after the other. Famous for the erotic figures it also displays armies with war elephants holding men upside down with there trunks, horses and camels. And I can only recommend visiting. The temple are very well preserved for anything more then a 1000 years history partly for the isolated location of Khajuraho that preserved it from the invading Muslims hard hand on displays of erotica …and as legend tells maybe due to the voyeur nature of the rain god Indra, as the temples where protected from lightning by the display of erotica as Indra didn’t like to ruin his own enjoyment.

Coorg

by MichaelFalk1969

Coorg (or: Kodagu) is part of Karnataka State in Southern India, bordering on northern Kerala. It is somehow off the beaten path and not much marketed in the guide books, but deserves a longer stay. Especially the South Coorg area has a good touristic infrastructure with a wide choice of homestays.Southern Coorg & the Brahmagiri Hills area have a marvelous natural scenery and has an abundant number of coffee plantations. It is also very close to Nagarhole National Park and the (Keralan) Wayanad (Tholpetty) National Park. Hiking in the fascinating landscape of the Brahmagiri Hills is also possible. Northern Coorg has Madikeri, the capital, with the Omrakeshwara Temple and the panoramic viewpoint "Raja`s Seat". In close vicinity to Madikeri, in the town of Bylakuppe, is a Tibetan exile settlement with the famous "Golden Temple" in the Namdroling Monastery.

See a zoo for twenty five cents

by Marthamaire

Calcutta ZooI am not a zoo fan but I had some time to kill so I went to the Calcutta zoo. It costs 25 cents to get in. As a photographer, the best part for me was watching the locals with their children and getting some nice shots. Most Indians are very happy to have their photos taken and do not take offense at all.

Christmas creche in Cochin

by Marthamaire

CochinCochin is 30% Catholic which is rare in India. As a result, you will see several Catholic Churches there, including St. Thomas More. The Christmas crèche in one was very interesting. The usual figures of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, etc., were joined by figurines of Hindu gods and goddesses. Hell was represented by red colored gauze material into which representations of human feet and arms were stuck, reaching upwards. A bit disconcerting at first, but an insight into the commingling of religions.

Mother Teresa's Ashram

by Marthamaire

Mother Teresa’s AshramWhen in Calcutta, please go to Mother Teresa’s Ashram, her place of safety for orphaned infants and children. As an American, my expectations of the place were higher than the Indian reality. If you do more than just stop by to make a donation, if you actually go inside to see the children, you have to be prepared. This is a country of extreme poverty for many and the standards of an American “orphanage” are non-existent. I was first escorted into a rather dark room with rows and rows of cribs. No toys, no bright colors, no posters on the walls. Those children, who were old enough to stand, stood up at seeing me and stretched out their thin arms to be hugged. In this sad place, they were smiling, hopeful that I would pick them up. One of the nuns stated that it was against the rules for visitors to touch the children. This is because of the potential for the spread...

Kali Temple - amazing insight into Indian culture

by Marthamaire

Kali Temple, CalcuttaIf you want to immerse yourself in Indian culture, hang out at a temple for a day. I spent almost seven hours at the Kali Temple in Calcutta. This “temple” is not just one building but a large compound. Warning: religious sacrifices of live animals take place here so be prepared to happen upon something. I saw a goat being led to sacrifice and took off to another part of the temple to avoid it. I saw wedding parties, priests, women coming to pray for successful pregnancies, beggars, mounds of fruit and flower offerings, even the blessing of new cars and motorcycles. (When the motorcycles are blessed, the handlebars are hung with garlands of flowers and a coconut is smashed on the ground in front of them as a gift to the gods.) I must have taken over 200 photographs and it was an amazing insight into Indian culture.

Varkala

by MichaelFalk1969

Varkala is a Keralan beach resort ca. 1 hour south of Kollam. The glorious beach is enveloped by palm-tree-rimmed cliffs, it is very clean, not too crowded when I visited in 2/09, they have lifeguards and a complete touristic infrastructure with shops, restaurants and accomodation in all price-ranges. The thing I liked best about it was that even though Varkala is a popular destination, it is not over-developed and the beach view is not ruined by ugly hotel buildings. The beach is divided into a South and a North Cliff area, the South Cliff is preferrable and quieter in my opinion. The ocean here can be treacherous due to strong currents and the lifeguards are likely to let you only up to 50 meters (max.) into the water, so for swimming it is actually not the best place. I liked Varkala, and recommend it to anyone who wants to unwind and relax for a few days in Kerala.

Nandi Hills

by MichaelFalk1969

Nandi Hills is an area ca. 1 hour north of Bangalore and a weekend retreat for many Bangaloreans. The red-dust landscape with high hills and giant boulders is very unique and reminded me a little of the planet Mars. The main attraction is Nandi Hill, a former fortress site of Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. There, you can find Tipu`s Drop, the place where Tipu executed prisoners of war by dropping them from the hill. With the exception of Nandi Hill, there are no real hiking paths, but wild hiking is easy, the landscape is easy to navigate, and the scenery is great. If you are tired of Bangalore and want to see some nature, Nandi Hills would be a good option.

Wayanad (Tholpetty) National Park

by MichaelFalk1969

The Wayanad Sanctuary in Kerala has two different parts, the Tholpetty sanctuary at the border of Kerala-Karnataka, and the Muthanga sanctuary near the Tamil Nadu border. The flora of the reserve is dominated by teakwood, silver oak and eucalyptus trees as well as bamboo; Wayanad is animal-rich, and elephants, tigers, leopards, several deer species, Indian bison, wild boar, monkeys and peacocks can be seen. It is possible to do jeep safaris in the park, and you can also do half-day-hikes accompanied by forest rangers (important: for the hike, you need to apply and pay on the previous day). A possible base for exploring the park would be a homestay in the friendly Southern Coorg border region around Kutta village, dominated by coffee plantations. I can only speak for Tholpetty as I have not been to Muthanga, but I liked it, and this reserve is much more accessible than Nagarhole where...
