Varkala

by MichaelFalk1969

Varkala is a Keralan beach resort ca. 1 hour south of Kollam. The glorious beach is enveloped by palm-tree-rimmed cliffs, it is very clean, not too crowded when I visited in 2/09, they have lifeguards and a complete touristic infrastructure with shops, restaurants and accomodation in all price-ranges. The thing I liked best about it was that even though Varkala is a popular destination, it is not over-developed and the beach view is not ruined by ugly hotel buildings. The beach is divided into a South and a North Cliff area, the South Cliff is preferrable and quieter in my opinion. The ocean here can be treacherous due to strong currents and the lifeguards are likely to let you only up to 50 meters (max.) into the water, so for swimming it is actually not the best place. I liked Varkala, and recommend it to anyone who wants to unwind and relax for a few days in Kerala.

Nandi Hills

by MichaelFalk1969

Nandi Hills is an area ca. 1 hour north of Bangalore and a weekend retreat for many Bangaloreans. The red-dust landscape with high hills and giant boulders is very unique and reminded me a little of the planet Mars. The main attraction is Nandi Hill, a former fortress site of Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. There, you can find Tipu`s Drop, the place where Tipu executed prisoners of war by dropping them from the hill. With the exception of Nandi Hill, there are no real hiking paths, but wild hiking is easy, the landscape is easy to navigate, and the scenery is great. If you are tired of Bangalore and want to see some nature, Nandi Hills would be a good option.

Wayanad (Tholpetty) National Park

by MichaelFalk1969

The Wayanad Sanctuary in Kerala has two different parts, the Tholpetty sanctuary at the border of Kerala-Karnataka, and the Muthanga sanctuary near the Tamil Nadu border. The flora of the reserve is dominated by teakwood, silver oak and eucalyptus trees as well as bamboo; Wayanad is animal-rich, and elephants, tigers, leopards, several deer species, Indian bison, wild boar, monkeys and peacocks can be seen. It is possible to do jeep safaris in the park, and you can also do half-day-hikes accompanied by forest rangers (important: for the hike, you need to apply and pay on the previous day). A possible base for exploring the park would be a homestay in the friendly Southern Coorg border region around Kutta village, dominated by coffee plantations. I can only speak for Tholpetty as I have not been to Muthanga, but I liked it, and this reserve is much more accessible than Nagarhole where...

Kerala/Back waters

by gazellen

Rent a"boat" for a day ore more to discover the back waters of Kerala.Ayurvedic threatment - science of life !The massages is like cooking and using your hands and at the same time you will learn about the indian gods and the elements and the dosas and so many things that affect the body, mind and spirit.Very different from traditional western thinking. Trying to understand a little bit of the ayurvedic medicine, you will ce confused, amazed and feeling like having an eye opener to somthing very interesting. I bought a big book, and found a clever doctor ( traditional doctor and ayurvedic doctor in one person, a perfect match for me) and had private lessons for 14 days just for me. But it takes many years of studies, if you want to practise this for you living. I´m so afraid of theese people who learn something in a couple of weeks, and then go home and practise stuff on sick people.Try...

Jumping, Taj Mahal

by TheView

Well this is a must do for India, But do prepare yourself for Indians likening to have there photo taken with strangers (big white ”funny” looking foreigners) Some just for the fun some of the boys to brag with the photo ”with there hot night with a girl from the west” I was more times shown photos from Indian men, bragging with there unlikely conquests. Do make jumping photos!

Tip Photo
Kashmir, Shrinagar, Dal Lake

by TheView

Up in mountains of Kashmir you find a refuge from the burning heat down south. At Dal lake, Srinagar the British made houseboats for this purpose that are still in use. The lake makes wonderful scenery for a shikara boat tour around the lake. To see the floating gardens and old city and woodcrafts workshops that are not to be missed as there a simply amassing. Be ready for the shopkeepers that will paddle there boutique up to you and offer you spices and handcrafts. If you like honey as I you can also get to taste purges some just inform your shikara-wallah of you likings and he will know where you like to go.

Chamundi Hill (Mysore)

by MichaelFalk1969

The Chamundi Hills, about 1000 meters high, are located in the east of Mysore, Karnataka. A stairway of about 1000 steps leads from the foothills all the way up. At around 700 meters elevation, the statue of a Nandi Bull carved out of a granite monolith can be seen. The Nandi Bull - in Hindu mythology - is the animal on which the God Shiva uses to ride. At the top of the hill, the Mahishasura Statue and the interesting Chamundeswari Temple are the main attractions. The hike up is worthwhile and will keep you fit, and if you are not inclined to walk all the way, you can as well take a riksha. I noticed that along the last stretch of the hike there is much littering, but that should not keep you from coming to Chamundi Hill.

Bandhavgarh national park

by TheView

In Bandhavgarh National park in Madhya phadesh, they have the highest density of tigers in the world (around 56 tigers on 448 sq km). So here you will find a very good chance to spot a wild living tiger as I did. The morning tours include an elephant ride to get real near to the tigers (see photos).Tigers are an endangered species as it only takes so few persons buying tiger products to motivate poachers hunting them to extinction. While the tourist putting their money into the parks and resorts gives other economical benefits to local community as a counterweight.

Lalitha Mahal Hotel (Mysore)

by MichaelFalk1969

The stunning Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel of Mysore was built as a palace for the entertainment of the Wodeyar Maharaja`s guests, the construction completed in 1921. In Mysore, only the Amba Vilas Palace is larger than Lalitha Mahal. It is now used as a (state-run) hotel. Even if you don`t stay the night here, it is perfectly possible to have a civilized cup of tea here and enjoy the gorgeous interior at a very affordable price.

Tip Photo
Ranganathittoo Bird Reserve

by MichaelFalk1969

The small Ranganathittoo or Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary in Karnataka, 30 minutes driving distance from Mysore, near the historic site of Srirangapatna, consists of six small islands within the river Cauvery that are an important habitat for local and migrant birds, and also for flying foxes and marsh crocodiles. The park can be explored by taking part in a half-hour rowing boat ride, where hundreds of birds can be spotted (and heard) from close distance. My guide claimed that during migration time there can be up to 25.000 birds in this place. The most common species where open-beaked storks and painted storks, but grey and purple herons, night herons, cormorants, snake birds, pelicans, spoonbills, egrits and sandpipers were also abundant, and I easily spotted 5 crocodiles. A great nature experience and a must-see that can easily be combined with a visit to Srirangapatna.
