shopping - ANYWHERE in India

by redheaney

Was fleeced at the market the other weekend, but we made the journey back there yesterday, spoke with the Market Superintendant - and managed to return the crap (which we were informed was silk) and got all of our money back!! It is really sad, but when they see us "foreigners" coming, they automatically up the price by at least 200%!! They think that we are stupid (& we were, last w/end) but thankfully, it ended well.BUYER BEWARE!! we were fortunate to be reimbursed, but we had a fight on our hands - not to mention the inconvenience of it all. stick to your guns... if you don't want to buy something - don't let them talk you into it (& boy, will they ever try!) know what it is your are purchasing.... ask the seller the price of the item/s... divide that number by at least 3 or 4... and you should be good to go! barter, barter, barter... but BE FAIR!! i thought that this would be an...

shopping ANYWHERE in India... tip #2

by redheaney

<<<...we 'bumped into' a fellow, from whom we had previously made some small purchase and who we seem to 'run into' whenever we are in that area. I don't quite know how they do it, but they are all at it.... they find you, out of all of the hundreds of people in the area and then take you, as their "friend," back to the shop they work at, and try to coax you into parting with your hard-earned cash. So, we humour him and purchased a few shawls, etc. They are actaully very nice and rush around getting you seats and chai (tea) to make your time at their shop as pleasant (and expensive) as possible...>>> remain calm and polite... if you know that you are not going to be talked into making purchases, DON'T accept their hospitality and drink their chai/smoke their cigarettes, etc. (goes without saying, really) again (& at the risk of sounding repetative) stick to your...

The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur

by Paul2001

It's incredible! It's unmissable! It's spellbinding! It's ho hum. Or at least that is what I thought of the Jantar Mantar. The Jantar Mantar is a total of eighteen instruments were erected between 1728 and 1734 by Jai Singh. What we see today is an array of brick curves, slants, circles and pillars. I really only found the place to be of mild interest. An fine hobby for Mr. Singh but a visit for me was not mindblowing. Okay I did not hire a guide to show me how this huge astonomical observatory is suppose to work but it just did not interest me all that much. Out of all the attractions in India this is the one that left me most disappointed. The highlight of the complex is the Samrat Yantra, which has a 27-metre-high centrepiece (gnomon), and can calculate the time to within two seconds. I suppose this is amazing but really watching it is a dull as watching paint dry.

Tourist Site Hustlers

by majul

It was rather frustrating in Mumbai....where the people are trying to sell whatever they can to any non-local looking people. We figured out a rather cleaver scam after being infront of Mumbai's India Gate for 10minutes. A homeless child came up to us, tugging at our clothes. We assumed she wanted money, but she shook her head and presented a pretty flower bracelet (looked like something she could've made), and she placed them around my wrist. She smiles, and leaves. Few minutes later, a woman came up to me, pointing at my bracelet, asking to pay. Its a family scam. I simply took off the bracelet and gave it back to her, but as I observed carefully, there were families around the India gate, busy making bracelets for similar tricks. Be pleasent, but be firm. Don't start giving out money or anything in a crowd because you'll get swamped. If you want to give people something or buy...

See The Kashmir crafts!

by merlinsboy

The Golden Triangle tour to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur was interrupted by numerous trips to Emporiums showcasing the skills and crafts of enthnic workers! Basically the guide was on a bung to take you to a waiting vampire who had great intent on leaching all the available cash from your person or credit from your card! After a while the endless carpets being rolled out in front of you, the demonstrations on how the marble tabletop does not stain or the rings being forced over your fingers gets a bit tedious! When taken to such a place, accept the tea or drink. Smile and be respectful. If you want to see the carpets, fine, but let them know, and you will have to do this several times, that you are not interested in buying anything. If they still go on, get up and leave in a pleasant manner! If you really have had enough, stay in the car and tell the guide or taxi driver, NO!

Kashmir shops

by aladin99

They catch you with a nice "Temple view" in the shops. It's hard to escape from them. Price level is generell higher than in the market behind the temple. But you can find some Nother Indian art craft. Look how they make silk carpet.

Watchout when leaving India to Nepal !!!

by boasnovas

Leaving India to Nepal at Varanasi´s airport, you can´t take Indians rupees with you. I didn´t know it. Federal agents at the airport are very corrupted and they don´t let you go outside the airport to change the money. So they made me pay a percentage of what I had, to let me go in peace.... Don´t take indians rupees with you or at least hide them...

Sify Internet Cafe in Margao train station

by largerama

Even if you are a member of this chain of internet cafe and have paid in advance for your card they still charge you a 30 rupee to use their net facilities. All other branches have no such thing. Thats a rip off. Punch the bloke in the face for being a smarmy git!! Find net cafes elsewhere. There are many.

Touts of Delhi and the Tourist Bureau

by Waxbag

It would seem that most of the people in Delhi are touts ready to make a killing on any tourist. I know this sounds like a generalization, and perhaps unfair. But, we spoke with many Delhi-ites about this problem and they said we are right. The people here are looking for a quick rupee. What really upset my wife and me was getting taken advantage of by the government tourist bureau. These slick talking, arrogent, asses are just as bad. They don't listen to you, but try to sell you the most expensive package tour they can. We met many other travellers that fell victim to these guys. So just be careful in Delhi and know that you can do all your own arranging of tickets anywhere in the country. Check out our travel log for an indepth account of our story of dealing with the Tourist Bureau. May these guys be born rats in their next life. Tourist Abuse Travel Log
