Payment in hotels - the small print

by NEILHALLIDYA

Ensure that you check the checking in and checking out times at hotels. I know this sounds very straightforward but I had a small "altercation" in Delhi. I arrived in Delhi at 06:30 one morning and checked out at 07:00 the next morning. The small print that I had signed said that you had to check out after 24 hours you would be charged another day. I challenged this and was met with a stonewall, "This is a problem, sir." My patience was "tested".To avoid this, check the small print. Check the small print and check arrangements before checking in.

The Red Fort in Delhi

by Paul2001

Most people might not regard the Red Fort of Delhi as a tourist trap but I did. This is because of the dozen or so fortress and palaces that I visited, the Red Fort was probably the biggest disappointment. I think that there are several reasons behind this. One was the pollution of Delhi was getting to me. Another was that I had just had a problem with an autorickshaw driver who did not seem to want to take me to where I wanted to go. So I was in a miserable mood. Finally the fort itself is not all that remarkable when compared to the other great forts scattered throughout India. There simply is nothing here that you will not see that is better and more interesting elsewhere in India. Still there are several buildings within in the fort that will grab the attention of the most worn out traveler as I was at the time. The Lahore Gate which is the main entrance into the fort is one of the...

Deedar-E-Taj hotel in Agra

by pucela777

Avoid this filthy place at all cost!Rooms are unbelievably dirty, like all the rest in this hotel, and it is not a matter of having it cleaned by the room service upon arrival. It would require water, soap, disinfectant, time, tools, and knowledge how to use them. None of them is available at this hotel. After complaining, and changing room two times, we had to go through the pile of "clean" sheets and towels of the hotel to find the least dirty ones. Really disgusting. One of them even had a worm.Air conditioning is central, so it will blow cold air on your face whether you like it or not, and they like to switch it on in the middle of the night. You cannot call from your room outside the hotel, and from the reception only from 9:00 pm.Believe me, we visited almost 20 other hotels throughout Rajastan and Delhi within the same price range as this one. We had no problem at any one of them,...

Arrived after sunset?? ...

by tonirvana

Arrived after sunset?? Please, please~~~ how about considering to stay in the airport one night? Nearly all guide books write the same thing, but I never knew the capital city of one country can be so dark just at 9 P.M. So, my ignorance led me to go through all the dangers the guid books warned of. Reserve a public taxi from the airport and try to share it with someone else if you're alone. Before that, you must have a hotel reservation too.

Give me my pen!

by grets

Every time the bus stopped at traffic or for any other reason, we would be surrounded by little children begging for school pens. I found it quite sad that something we take so much for granted back home, should be of such importance to the children here. Instead of giving pens directly to the begging children, it is better to donate pens and other stationery to a school. That way they will be evenly distributed and you know they will go to children who are trying to learn and better themselves, rather than the strongest bully trading them for sweets or money with other children.

to be on time - chose another country

by yanate

if u r crazy about punctuality or about making plans far in advance, it's better to go somewhere elseso don't make any strict plans because in india time has different way of running and all plans have to be really flexible to folow it's way just relax and follow the vibe of the country, u'll be surprise how in the end everything ends well, don't worry

Where to stay in Kovalam to avoid the tourist trap

by LFTT

At lighthouse beach and Eve's beach there are many people trying to sell you: maps, cigarettes, sarongs, keyrings that glow in the dark and many other items, at first this is a novelty but it doesn't take long before it becomes irritating especially if you just want to read a book and relax. Be firm from the start that you don't want to buy their products that way they'll leave you alone and move onto the next victim... We stayed at Samudra beach, street trader hassle is minimal here. For this reason we thought it was the best of all the beachs for relaxing and when we did want a bit more action we were only a £1 rickshaw ride away from the busier beaches of lighthouse and Eve's.

The Palace of Winds (Hawa Mahal) Up Close

by Hmmmm

With a name like the Palace of Winds you'd want to see it too right? When I was young I saw pictures of this red standstone 'Palace' in books and I'd say to myself "I am soooooo going to see that when I go to India, Its remarkable. Its a Pearl in the Desert." To a New Zealander, from the green rolling hills of rainy Taranaki, in the depths of the South Pacific, there is nothing my exotic, more romantic, than a Palace called the 'Palace of Winds' that hails back to days of Desert Maha Rajas, Camels and Rajasthani pageantry. It had much more allure to me than the Taj Mahal, even though that is in itself incredible. When I saw the Hawa Mahal from the autorickshaw my heart skipped beat. "Here it is in front of me," I heard myself say. After finding the way between too shops and a small walk, paying the fee and entering, I found that the Hawa Mahal is a Facade. A beautiful Facade, with most of...

Morning Bathers in the Ganga (Ganges)

by Hmmmm

To Hindus, the Ganges is a deity and represents a deity at the same time. The Waters of the Ganga the most important river in India, purify. Hence returning your body to the Ganga wfater you die is an act of purification from life's deeds, washing and bathing in the ganga is also an act of Purification. Many Hindus begin their day with a bath or a swim in the Putrid Ganges. Why? Well it is believed that the Ganges Comes Down To Earth from Heaven. A legend from the Ramayana speaks of King Bhagirath who once meditated before Lord Brahma for a thousand years for the salvation of the souls of his ancestors. Pleased with his devotion Brahma granted him a wish. He requested the Lord to send the river Ganges down to earth from heaven so that she could flow over his ancestors' ashes and wash their curse away and allow them to go to heaven. Brahma granted his wish but asked him to pray to Shiva,...
