    Trying it!
    by SirRichard
The first time we took a rickshaw we were a bit concerned about the effort the thin man in front had to do to carry the 2 of us. At one of the stops I was feeling so bad that I asked the thin man to let me ride for him. He looked me kind of strange, but finally let me do it. Gosh, it was hard, I had to try real hard, and I was going down!! LOL After that experience I never more bargained the first price when taking a rickshaw ;-)))

This way of transport is nowadays just a tourist atraction, but anyway is a nice experience to ride on top of an elephant, and after all... where better than in India?
We had this ride going up to Amber Fort, near Jaipur. The fort is up the hill, so the bus leaves you at the foot of the slope, from where elephants take tourists 4 by 4 up to the top...

    Salad Making on Train

Trains are the very best way of getting from city to virtually any other city. They are safe, reliable & much fun. Travel 1st or 2nd air-con. Its easy to book a trip, and one meets interesting people on a train. The scenery is good, and for meals, well,we are vegetarian, so we always buy fruit, and vegetables, and make a salad on the train.Nothing tastes better!! Forego the chai, just this once! Its never any good. Secure your luggage, and sleep with passports & money etc under pillow. On long journeys, I recommend 1stClass AC(because of privacy) But on short, overnight trips, 2nd AC is just fine...sharing with strangers was not a problem. Its just make up the bunk, take of your shoes, and sleep. In the morning you are at your destination. And each bunk has a curtain, for a bit of privacy.

Buses are also fun.........try & book a front seat.........they have more leg-space.Very cheap too, and a good book is handy on a longer trip. Hiring a private car is cheap, but the the roads are a bit of a nightmare.

If India were a person India Rail would be its circulatory system. This is how important it is. Most of India's rail network is from the period of British Colonial rule. Unfortunately some of it is definately that old.

The India Rail operate the fifth largest Rail network in the world (after USA, Russia, Canada and China) and connect all major tourist and business destinations across the length and breadth of the country. The Indian Railways operate nearly 7800 passenger services a day covering almost 63,000 kms. Everybody travels India rail, and it is India's largest employer.

The railways have one of the most efficient communication systems between 2 stations. The types of class available are 1st class, AC 2tier, AC 3tier, 2nd class sleeper & chair car. The 1st class being phased out being converted in to AC 2 tier/AC 3 tier (recently being introduced in some of the trains).

The 1st class is mainly for 6 persons in day and converted in to a cabin for 4 persons for night travel. The AC 2tier class is mostly recommended for comfortable travelling for long distances as movement of persons in the compartment other than reserved people is not permitted. Also you travel pollution free and bedding is provided at night from an attendant. However there are only 2-3 coaches of AC 2tier per train of 15-17 boggies, hence ticket availability is difficult if not booked well in advance. 2nd class sleeper is the cheapest and most common way of travelling in India in which 3 sleepers are provided for night travel. The chair car is the most comfortable way of travelling for shorter distances in daytime. E.g. Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Nasik, Mumbai-Ahmedabad.

The aproximate fare comparison is given below to give you an idea.SECTOR - MUMBAI - BANGALORE (KM-1210/750 Mile) (Aproximate)

    AC First Class- Rs. 2800/- , AC 2-Tier Sleeper-Rs.1400/-, First Class-1000/-, AC 3-Tier Sleeper-900/-, 3tier Sleeper-300/-.

Travelling around India with India Rail without buying a copy of the India Rail travel Essential: Trains at a Glance, is like trying to cook vegetables without water, possible, but not effective.

This book contains information on every train in India. It has route maps, and India maps. It even has tidbits on India culture and monuments which make a good read on long train trip.

'Trains at a Glance' Allows you to search for trains in three ways: (1) by the number of the train that every train has been allotted, (2) by route - Every train track has an allotted route number and name and (3) by destination.

When you are using this book, use the travel maps to ascertain what train will take you closest to your destination, if the express or direct trains are booked.

    TAXIS AND TUK-TUKS
  • Tip Rating:
  • lynnehamman
  • Updated By lynnehamman on February 7, 2009
  • India Page by lynnehamman
  • THERE MUST BE MILLIONS OF TAXIS AND TUK-TUKS IN INDIA.

These two modes of transport are by far the easiest, cheapest and most popular mode of getting around in the cities and towns of India. They are very cheap, and plentiful. One has to bear in mind, however, that prices are variable.

Taxis can be hailed by hand- these are usually the yellow and black ones, andare not air-conditioned. Always make sure that if they are a "metered" taxi- the meter is switched on and working. Alternativly- FIX the price before departing. Also make sure that the driver KNOWS exactly where you wish to go to, and knows the way.

The same rules apply to Tuk-Tuks (Auto-Rickshaws) regarding cost & destination requirements. Tuk-Tuks can easily negotiate the heavy city traffic- but hang on to your hat! They do not heed normal traffic rules.

This is the ultimate way to travel in India. A Qualis is basically a little mini-van that seats 8-10 people very comfortably. We traveled to Shimla, Amritsar and back to Delhi via a Qualis. The cost per day was only $18 US.. The convenience of having a car and driver for such an inexpensive cost was priceless. As a general rule, you must provide the driver all meals and we also chose to give him a very generous daily tip.

This train service runs various lines and is a relatively comfortable way to travel. We took the Shatabdi Express from New Delhi to Ludhiana when we arrived in India. The train provides snacks, meals and drinks all included in the price of the train ticket.

  • India is well connected by roads.Almost it had good roads except few states.
If travelling long distance bus is not good.If you traveling short period.Near by places can go by bus.
But i tell you withing cities you cant think of going by bus.Only locals can manage, almost it is crowded all time. And one more thing the bus route ,name all written in Indian language,so its big adventure to take bus ride.
Travelling state to state ,you can avail interstate Bus,no need of booking usually, but still its better if you book one day before.

  • If you dont mind for budget then best things is hire car&Driver.Travel agent all gives car plus driver package.Usually it will be per day.

The usual travel operators tariff will be like this.Per kilometre,if its car Rs4.50,Ac car ,Rs5.50,big Van for more than 5 ppl,it will be Rs 7.How these work out means, travel whereever you want, end of the trip, the kilometers *Rs per KM..
Both the plans for drivers, per day Rs 100 you have to give. This is the rate for major cities.
The tariff may be vary littel place to place.

The car driver will take you shops, usualy they get commision from the shops.:)

So if you interested in shopping no problems, if you not interested first it self you have to tell the driver firmly no shopping.
Why am mentioning this, this is the main complained from my friends who availed car.:)
