India Railways

by RollingOkie

I like India Railways. They've been good to me. So far. I booked all my tickets through Cleartrip primarily because I didn't seem to have any problems using my credit card to make payments. It was also straightforward and easy. As of the present time, you can book train tickets 90 days in advance. Do so, if you can. You can have problems getting space on an ad hoc basis. Second class and thrid class trains are okay. People who ride sleeper class say they're fine. The trains are certainly cheap -> Delhi to Mumbai overnight (16 to 30 hours) = $9 sleeper class and $22 second class.

Tuk-Tuks

by RollingOkie

Technically, they're 3 wheeled motorcycles. They hold lots of people. They are available everywhere that I went during my time in India. This is a picture of me and Shabbu. I hired him for a day - 8 hours - to take me around Agra for $11. He liked it. I liked it. I could get a tuk-tuk to virtually any local attraction for $0.75 to $1.50 with the average being around $1. I had to bargain with them. Always. They usually start out somewhere around twice what they and settle for a little more than they have to. When you walk away and they don't chase you down and accept your "final offer" you've gone too low. You'll have to walk back and eat a litle humble pie or start the process all over again with another driver..

Booking train tickets

by Durfun

The system isn't particularly complex, but don't forget how populous the country is, and how many people rely on trains as the sole means of transport (medium to long-distance).As a result, trains are often jam-packed, and to ensure peace of mind a reservations system has been set up to guarantee seats. Standing for a long time is not fun!!Luckily, as a foreigner, you have the option to use a special facility: certain number of seats are set aside for foreigners so you can get a seat with very short notice (booking period). Also, there is another facility called 'tatkal' meaning 'urgent'. This requires paying a bit extra, upto x 1.5 the normal fare, but again you can hope to get a seat at short notice.Check the website: www.irtc.co.in for timings, schedules, etc. Unfortunately this website is not geared up to accept foreign-issued credit cards the last time I checked.Worse comes to...

Consider an "Open Jaw" air ticket

by MikeySoft

I agree with others that you should not try to see too much during your first visit but if you are considering to do a little more like the areas convenient to Delhi and Mumbai, you may want to consider an "Open Jaw" air ticket from you home where you fly into one city, end you trip in a different city to fly home. This save you the time and expense of returning back to the first city for your flight back home. I did this for my India (Delhi/Mumbai), my Greece/Turkey (Istanbul/Athens), and my Israel/Egypt (Tel Aviv/Cairo) trips. Unfortunately, I was unable to see Mumbai at the end of my trip because of lack of time. I flew into Mumbai and connected to Aurangabad to see the caves. I flew back to Mumbai and connected to my flight back home. I only had a general plan for my trip. The only set things were my flights from/to my home. I went with the flow and arrange car/drivers, air flights,...

Maybe you can upgrade to first class on the train

by MikeySoft

The road was closed in the middle of nowhere because it was block with protestors. We later found out the protesters cause was a good one in a Gandhi way. I had to take a last minute train to Agra from a small town on the road from Jaipur. There were not first class tickets at the stations. Sometimes you can upgrade when you board. You much see the agent from the train ASAP. I did this when he got off at the station on the platform. Please rate this tip and my others when you find them useful, interesting, or like the photos. Thanks.

Print out your travel itenary

by Callavetta

You must show a printed flight itenary to get into the airport. This is important to know because I've become very accustomed to not having anything printed out and just presenting my passport at the ticket counter to get my boarding pass. However, in India (and Indonesia!) you can't get INTO the airport terminal without showing something indicating that you have a flight from that specific airport on that specific day!Next you will go to a scanner and run your check in baggage through a machine before going to the desk to get your boarding pass. The attendant will put "TSA" type locks on your luggage and load the luggage back on your trolley. Then you will line up a the desk to get your boarding pass and hand over any luggage you want checked. At this point, you must take tags for your hand carried bags (laptops and/or purses). Be sure NOT to lose these little tags. They will be stamped...

Every possible type of vehicle!

by Callavetta

The vehicles; motorshaws, motorbikes with anywhere between 1 and 4 passengers, bicycles, pushcarts, ox drawn carts, tractor drawn carts, busses of all assorted types (completely jammed with people), trucks with their back parts filled with laborers, trucks pulling trailers piled precariously high with stuff (sugar cane, branches, cardboard, unidentifiable items), and tons of huge closed up trucks. The latter are brightly colored with flashing lights (like Christmas lights), designs and much of the front window painted in these designs, seemingly limiting their visibility. Everybody has their high beams on, except those who don’t have any lights at all. And they all honk all the time Totally crazy! Then there are the pedestrians: people walking along the side of the roads in pairs and singles. The road is a two lane road, not particularly well paved with lots of potholes and dirt places....

Sleeper Class - The only way to travel :)

by global-drifter

I find a reputable travel agent and book my train for Varanasi. Although the journey itself is 680 kms, the price is less than 300 rupees including service charges. I am told the trip will take just 9 hours, but have been told by others it could take as long as 15. The train is called the 'Howringi Express,' and all AC compartments are fully booked - I will have to take sleeper class. The compartments are a little stuffy, but apart from that it's not so bad. It's more comfortable than any plane ride I've been on, as instead of just a seat, I'm given a full bench to stretch out on. We are stacked like sardines though, with 8 benches per compartment! Luckily though, this section of the train is not overbooked and there are just three of us where there could have easily been eight. My fellow travelers provide me with chai from the passing wallah, but don't allow me to pay. It is almost 3am,...

Trains to Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi from Delhi

by anilpradhanshillong

Please be aware that the places you wish to visit (Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Khajuraho), will be in the grip of winter during January. Attendant problems are fog and delayed, cancelled or diverted flights. The chilly winds that blow through Delhi and Agra emanate from Rajasthan and the Thar desert area - they are biting cold. My wife and I had taken a bus to Khajuraho in our younger days during that period. Needless to say, we were chilled to the very bones. You will be better off during February, ie., after the festival of 'Lohri' (Jan 13, 2011) and before 'Holi' (Mar. 20, 2011). The days start becoming warmer. You may consider making Delhi your base and travelling to Agra (3 hours) to Jaipur (5 hours) and to Varanasi (overnight). Plenty of buses ply to these places. Better still, you may like to try the premier trains. For Khajuraho, you may like to take a flight. Thereafter, you have the...
