India's priority

by solopes

For a western visitor, used to give priority to his right, with signposted exceptions, it's hard to understand traffic in India. But things do work there, and after some days you'll be able to understand the complex order of priority, that goes like this:1 - The cow (absolute and divine priority)2 - The elephant (almost like it)3 - The camel4 - The heaviest truck5 - The other trucks6 - Cars7 - Wagons, carts, rickshaws8 - Bikes9 - People10 - PigsChicken don't count, and the order from 4 to 6 may be reversed by the use of the horns, or, stronger than that, light signals.Good luck, and enjoy, it's really an emotion, but I must admit that, in two weeks, I only saw two accidents and two dead cows.

Rajasthan By Car

by smirnofforiginal

I cannot recommend Rajasthan By Car highly enough. Mahavir Yadav's catchphrase is "come as a guest, leave as a friend" and it sums up the time we spent with him.He was friendly, reliable, trustworthy and a very good driver. We told him where we wanted to go and he took us to all of them and more. We had a few adventures together and a very nice time. My children thought he was great (and a bit mad!!!) and I thought he had a wonderful sense of fun and good humour. As well as being a very good driver he also lived up to his reputation of good singer, banker and doctor. We could not have had a better person introducing us to India.http://www.rajasthan-by-car.net/or : mahavir_yad@hotmail.com

Domestic flights TAG TAG TAG!!!

by smirnofforiginal

There are some good cheap and cheerful airlines. My personal experience proved Spicejet to be the cheapest and actually the friendliest but they don't fly all internal routes like some of their larger competitors (Kingfisher, Jet Air...)Anyway, my tip here is about security and because I wish somebody had given me the nod before I did my first domestic India run!You cannot proceed past the check-in counters until they announce your flight at security and when you go to security you MUST have a luggage lable on your handluggage which they will scan and stamp to show it has passed security. If you fail to do this simplest of things at check in you WILL be sent back and you WILL have to queue again and again! As with pretty much all security in India women and men have to get into their gender appropriate queues. Women do not panic - your children (irrespective of gender) may accompany you -...

"Indian Trains for dummies" :-D

by smirnofforiginal

Everybody will tell you to get a train and everybody will tell you they are find and good fun and everybody will be right... but finding uselful, proper advice about how to go about it is not so simple! Trains are a very cheap way to get about.First you need the website : www.irctc.co.inFrom the website you can get a fully comprehensive train map of India. Once you know the route you want you will need the train's NAME and NUMBER in order to book it (eg The Devagiri Express, train np. 7057).You can book online in advance and once you have the train name and number it is a pretty easy procedure. Before you book you should also decide how you wish to travel. (eg 1st class, air conditioned , 4-berth compaartment with a locking door, or 1st class cabin with a curtain to separate you from the next person etc...)Some train outes are more popular than others and some compartments much more...

Arrival Airport choice

by Durfun

The trouble with Delhi can be fog & the resulting delays, particularly in winter.. It used to be a lot worse before they imposed CNG rickshaws, etc.Usually, for direct flights it will be a choice between Mumbai or Delhi. Either could be cheaper. For Rajasthan, and the Golden Triangle, pick a Delhi arrival.Mumbai could be done if you're planning to go to Goa or further South.

Train tickets

by Durfun

For train bookings on standy-by, generally seat confirmations are available 2 days ahead of the scheduled run.You have two options:1. check from their website, ircc..2. investigate alternative (bus) travel times closest after your train departure time, and then arrive at the train station confidently (after all, there is a difference between optimism & realism!). The respective carriages will have the confirmation notices stuck on them, so you can see if your names are included, then, and only then do you give up on the train & bus it!!*** are you aware of allocation left aside for foreigners? Same as the NRI (non resident Indian) arrangement, whereby you pay 1.5x but get a guaranteed seat!

Interstate travel

by Durfun

Within India, Kingfisher & Jet Airlines are renowned for excellent service. If you can plan & book ahead (21 days advance), huge discounts are to be found, eg Mumbai-Delhi for 1200INR versus regular 3900INR/4600INR !!Air travel can save you a lot of time; to get a local experience you can always travel short distances in suburban trains, eg from Bombay Central to VT (Victoria Terminus now called Chhatrapati Shivaji..), etc.Similarly one can experience rail travel from Delhi to Agra, Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur, etc.Palace of Wheels does a tailored tourist circuit by luxury train, covering all the important & interesting cities. Worth experiencing, although quite pricey.

Taxi drivers of India

by RakeshKapadnis

The taxi drivers in Indian Metros can easily take you to the sights without any problem. No need to remember the street names. The best thing in India is all most all the Indians can speak at least broken English. So there is no language barrier. Very few among them actually cheat you. So I will suggest you to do your homework about the places & their distances. If you hire from cab companies like Meru then such problem would not occur. All d best for the India tour.

Rails & Wheels

by lynnehamman

Trains are the very best way of getting from city to virtually any other city. They are safe, reliable & much fun. Travel 1st or 2nd air-con. Its easy to book a trip, and one meets interesting people on a train. The scenery is good, and for meals, well,we are vegetarian, so we always buy fruit, and vegetables, and make a salad on the train.Nothing tastes better!! Forego the chai, just this once! Its never any good. Secure your luggage, and sleep with passports & money etc under pillow. On long journeys, I recommend 1stClass AC(because of privacy) But on short, overnight trips, 2nd AC is just fine...sharing with strangers was not a problem. Its just make up the bunk, take of your shoes, and sleep. In the morning you are at your destination. And each bunk has a curtain, for a bit of privacy.Buses are also fun.........try & book a front seat.........they have more leg-space.Very cheap too, and...

Train between Pakistan and India

by Rupanworld

The Samjhauta (friendship) express train between Delhi, India and Lahore, Pakistan. At present is is a twice-weekly service, Tuesdays and Fridays. In the year 2000 there was an incident of bombing in the train causing many deaths but then there are bombing on roads also, all throughout the world. The train crosses via Wagah (Pakistan) border and Attari (India) border and Attari is only 25 kms from Amritsar. For more information Check out this link for more details http://www.iloveindia.com/indian-railways/trains/samjhauta-express.html
