Transportation within a city

by travellingtechie

You have reached the destination station of your journey and you come out of the station and what do you see....many auto-rickshaw/taxi drivers hasling you to ride to your hotel in their vehicle.Dont pay any heed to them...most of the big stations and airports in India have a pre-paid taxi/auto-rickshaw booking counter, its just a question of finding it and telling them where you need to go. They will charge you the correct amount and will give a receipt and a vehicle will appear from the queue to take you to your destination. If you want, you may tip the driver later on.Most of the big hotels will be able to arrange for taxis for the day for site-seeing in that particular city. They may cost a bit more but is a very big convenience at the end of the day. If you are in a smaller city and want to go around, then ask the rickshaw puller how much he will take for a particular place.

Can the Indian Trains be overbooked??

by travellingtechie

Can the train be overbooked?? Yes, they surely can be. Infact, most of the times they are. There is a system called RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) that is followed in IR. This is how it works...Suppose all the confirmed berts are booked and still there is a demand for tickets of a particular class. In this case there is a certain number of RAC tickets available on each train for each class. These tickets are then issued to the passengers. The ticket will say something like RAC 1 or RAC 2, etc. Once these are fully filled and still if someone wants to book a ticket then he or she is put on the Waiting List which may look like W/L 1 or W/L 2. If a confirned ticket is cancelled by a passenger before the departure of the train, then the RAC 1 will be given that place and his name will appear on the reservation chart. The passengers with the RAC tickets are allowed to board the train...

The Biggest Employer in the World-Indian Railways

by travellingtechie

The Indian Railways is the biggest employer in the world, in terms of number of people employed. The train system is an extensive one, covering all parts of the country. Although air travel has become quite popular in the recent past, the railways still remains the most popular and most frequented mode of transport among Indians. There are different classes and all of them cost different amounts of money. The Indian Railways official website is indianrail.go.in which has a link to Internet Reservations for online reservation of tickets on the home page. There is a "Trains Between Important Stations" tag just below the "Internet reservations" one, which shows the trains that are available between different important stations. There is a catch over here. Sometimes the internet reservation service deducts the money from your credit card but does not generate the ticket. If that happens then...

Indian Airports

by travellingtechie

There are several airlines operating in India which provide services to different parts of the country from all the major cities. To name a few one can use the services of Kingfisher, Jet Airways, Sahara, Air Deccan, Indian, Spicejet, GoAir, etc.It is always advisable to book your tickets early, no matter where in the world you are travelling. Same applies to India. If you are travelling by air, then chances are good that the rates will be lower if you book early. Also it is especially recommended to book early if you are travelling near Diwali, Holi, Eid or any other big festival, because this is the time when most of the people travel home on vacation to spend the festival with their families. So it is possible that if not booked ahead, there may not be any flight tickets available or the ones available will be at 2-3 times the normal price. Some airlines provide meals during flight,...

Hoe to reach Leh (Road or Airplane)?

by axelebert

It is important not to underestimate the effect of high altitude. You should inform about risks, symptoms and what to do in case you experience first symptoms. When I had to choose I selected to go to Leh via Manali by Jeep, thought it is better for acclimatization, compared to a flight to 3500 m direct. I was wrong. The second night is in Sarchu, a camp at 4220 m altitude! Moreover the road is in bad condition, with heavy traffic and heavy diesel fumes from all the trucks. Combine with the heat and the need to eat somewhere on the road, where people have little facilities for washing hands and food (and little understanding for that) it creates a significant risk for infections, that adding to the overall stress the body already experiences.I strongly recommend to fly into Leh and take 3 days rest in your guesthouse. The stress level is much less, the maximum altitude is much less, and...

Cycle rickshaws

by TheView

Cycle rickshaws are not just a nice form of short distance transport it is also smart. The smartness of this transport from in India comes as there is so much hustling going on here. You can avoid being driven around in auto rickshaws from the one place to the other you don´t have any interest in. Just from the simple fact that the cycle rickshaw driver will get fatigued by such an endeavor and the one in the auto version don’t. I would even state that it sometimes the fastest transport given it’s more likely to give you a direct route to your destination.

Mumbai to Nainital by road

by bkarjee

For driving from Mumbai to Nainital, you may wish to follow Mumbai Delhi highway. If I am not mistaken, it is called NH-8 (Uptill Delhi). This goes via Baroda, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Chittaurgarh, Bhilwara, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Delhi. From Delhi, follow the highway NH24 to Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Ram Pur, Bilaspur, Lalkuan, Nainital. The route is very good all the way, but offcourse, too crowded also, as NH-8 connects two largest cities of India. Accomodation along the way is no problem. Just show up at any highway hotel along the way and check out for the room. Whenever you feel tired, just pull up at a roadside hotel and look for acco. Hope this helps.

Make friends on the train

by iblatt

I enjoyed my daytime train journeys in India. Traveling in a "Non-A/C" wagon gave me an opportunity to meet local people and talk to them. Being stuck together in a small compartment for several hours gives you enough time to get to know your neighbors and even have some "in depth" discussions... On the whole, I found my Indian fellow passengers eager to talk, to tell me about their lives and ask me questions about where I came from.A good way to break the ice and start a conversation was to look at my India photos on the camera; my neighbors were usually curious to know where these photos were taken and what my impressions were from those places. Opening my Lonely Planet also aroused curiosity as to what the book had to say about their home towns.I learned a lot about people's way of life, their beliefs and their attiitudes from these railway-journey conversations.

train travel

by MichaelFalk1969

Instead of inventing the wheel anew, I post the link to a very good website with a beginner`s guide to train travel in India. Everything you need to know, about the sometimes confusing eight different train classes, the reservation system etc. you will find here. Another very helpful website is www.irctc.co.in. After creating an account, you can buy train tickets via Internet and print the tickets out. This is a great way to save time queuing for tickets if you already now when you will start long-distance train journeys. As a rule of thump, train travel is the most convenient way of travelling in India, especially over longer distances. Extremely cheap, more comfortable than bus rides and much safer than motorized travel. Also, especially in Second Class, travelling is very communicative and entertaining. It is quite usual to chat up with your neighbour in a train, and time really...
