Fly Kingfisher: Excellent for domestic flights!

by iblatt

When we booked our domestic flight from Mumbai to Goa, a 1 hour journey, we did not expect much except for a seat on a plane which would depart more or less on schedule. Our flight with Kingfisher was surprisingly enjoyable. The Kingfisher ground crew helped us from the moment we entered the terminal, and also put additional seals and belts on our luggage. The plane was new and modern, equipped with comfortable seats and personal TV screens; the cabin crew was very professional and efficient; they managed to serve a whole meal plus a round of light drinks during this short flight. The meal was served within 5 minutes to all passengers, the food was very tasty (our first taste of Indian food on this trip!), and all food trays and trash were also efficiently collected within5 minutes. We subsequently flew Kingfisher from Kozhikode to Goa (via Mangalore), and from Goa to Mumbai: All flights...

Train from Delhi to the Taj Mahal

by flytheworld

The best train to take from Delhi to the Taj Mahal is the early morning Shatabdi Express. It leaves Delhi at 6:15am and only takes two hours to reach Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. Other trains take 3-4 hours and are often delayed, so the early train is your best bet.

Small rickshaws, loud honks

by iblatt

Rickshaws may superficially all look the same, like suicidal insects in black and yellow weaving in and out of traffic. But the truth is that they vary, in the testosterone level of the driver and in the loudness level of the honk (these two variables are closely correlated).A rickshaw driver with high testosterone and a loud honk will enter a junction in full speed, constantly honking, counting on the honk to scare away all other users of the road. He will also use every centimeter of the road to squeeze in between any two vehicles (including buses and trucks, if their honks are less loud than his own: why not?).So, if you want to know what kind of rickshaw journey it's going to be, ask the driver to honk before you get in.

taxi rides

by MichaelFalk1969

Overland - taxi rides in India are usually extremely cheap if compared to "western" prices. For a 3 - 4 hour ride you pay probably only the amount you would owe for a 15 minutes-inner-city-ride in Frankfurt or London. In 2009, taxi drivers would charge around 400-500 rupies for one hour driving time (about 7,50 Euro). This would be the most convenient way to travel if you want to go to a destination with no reliable train connection or bus-service. It helps to agree on the price beforehand or if you do some research on standard taxi rates to popular destinations. The most common cars used are the Indian "Ambassador" cars, which look nice but have not much horsepower. So even when travelling by car, don`t expect to travel faster than 60-70 km per hour.

the bus system

by MichaelFalk1969

Almost every place in South India is connected to the very reliable bus system. As a rule of thumb, if you want to go from place A to a place B in ca. two - three hours driving distance, busses from A to B would run every 15 minutes to half an hour. You jump in, pay the conductor a ridiculously slow sum for the ticket (even for several hours it was rarely more than 50 rupies) and catch a seat. It is not too comfortable and a journey of about 120 km`s can take up to four hours, but the most economic way of transport in India (except walking). If you want to go to a place with no train connection, the bus would be the best option. I would not recommend to use a travel agent, rather drop off at the bus station and ask the riksha driver to find the right bus for you. A travel agent will probably charge a commission that will be as expensive as the ticket itself. If you have a large backpack,...

TAXIS AND TUK-TUKS

by lynnehamman

THERE MUST BE MILLIONS OF TAXIS AND TUK-TUKS IN INDIA.These two modes of transport are by far the easiest, cheapest and most popular mode of getting around in the cities and towns of India. They are very cheap, and plentiful. One has to bear in mind, however, that prices are variable. Taxis can be hailed by hand- these are usually the yellow and black ones, andare not air-conditioned. Always make sure that if they are a "metered" taxi- the meter is switched on and working. Alternativly- FIX the price before departing. Also make sure that the driver KNOWS exactly where you wish to go to, and knows the way. The same rules apply to Tuk-Tuks (Auto-Rickshaws) regarding cost & destination requirements. Tuk-Tuks can easily negotiate the heavy city traffic- but hang on to your hat! They do not heed normal traffic rules.

Train

by Yasuo-ms

We need to get from Agra to Varanasi on the 11th of Februrary 2009. We've already made reservations on the 4864 (Marudhar Express) Train (2AC), but we've been Waitlisted and probably won't be able to get confirmations. Therefore, we are looking for an alternative train. However, while you are telling me we can buy a ticket from Delhi to Varansi and only enter in Tundla, jethanand is saying that I can’t do that.

Getting Gassed in India

by 850prc

As anyone who watches the news will know, the demand for oil in India continues to grow. With an expanding number of vehicles on her roads, India had built an effective network of service stations throughout the country. If you had any concerns about the availability of gasoline and petroleum products for any vehicle that you may rent or be responsible for fueling, worry not. Everywhere we went, I saw a plethora of service stations, and they were almost always open for business.I understand that all of them are state-supplied with product, if not directly owned by the government. There ARE several different "brands", but there appears to be almost no variation in the prices offered in various locales. It seems that if gas is 50 Rs per liter in Jaipur, for example, that's what it pretty much costs everywhere. They have a variety of grades, and most of the larger stations seem to have...

By Air to India from US East/Central or Europe

by 850prc

Most distant travellers are going to access India via air connections. My tips regarding air travel will focus on departures leaving either Europe or the US East Coast. Honestly, I didn't look into any US West coast departures, as it was clearly not the way we'd be travelling from Florida.OK, first Europe... If you are almost anywhere in Europe, you are going to have at least two good options, perhaps more, for a non-stop flight to New Delhi, or perhaps Mumbai. Your country's national carrier will undoubtably have service, especially if you're leaving from France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Russia, and some other locales. In addition, Air India will have nonstop service from many of these same cities. And, looking specifically at the UK, you'll also find some other Indian carriers, such as Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines, offering services to New Delhi nonstop. Prices will reflect these...

Palace on wheels

by Rupanworld

I am not sure whether I should put this tip in the transportation or in the things to do list. It is definitely one of the transport modes Indians are very proud of, but at the same time, it is something to see in itself. I am talking about the palace on wheels train and the enchanting royal journey with it. The concept of the train was to bring back the bygone days of the Maharajas and create an atmosphere where you would find yourself as if back to those days and enjoy a seven day tour of the historical places in Rajasthan mostly and partly in the Uttar Pradesh. The train is beautiful like a Palace and has luxurious cabins, wall carpets, beautiful decoration, a nice bar, two restaurants where they serve exquisite Indian food, and room service and as they claim, its "a heaven on earth for seven days!" The seven day trip on P on W starts at New Delhi with a a day tour of places like...
