Palace on wheels

by Rupanworld

I am not sure whether I should put this tip in the transportation or in the things to do list. It is definitely one of the transport modes Indians are very proud of, but at the same time, it is something to see in itself. I am talking about the palace on wheels train and the enchanting royal journey with it. The concept of the train was to bring back the bygone days of the Maharajas and create an atmosphere where you would find yourself as if back to those days and enjoy a seven day tour of the historical places in Rajasthan mostly and partly in the Uttar Pradesh. The train is beautiful like a Palace and has luxurious cabins, wall carpets, beautiful decoration, a nice bar, two restaurants where they serve exquisite Indian food, and room service and as they claim, its "a heaven on earth for seven days!" The seven day trip on P on W starts at New Delhi with a a day tour of places like...

Bus

by PierreZA

I traveled by bus from Trivandrum to Alleppey during October 2008. For as little as Rs300 you can travel with an AC bus, which is very comfortable. It is best to book a day or two in advance. I booked through SRM/Yahtra/Golden in Trivandrum.

Jet Airways

by PierreZA

I recently (Oct 2008) made use of Jet Airways to fly from Mumbai to Trivandrum. Unfortunately our flight was delayed. But, it was the only one delayed, many flights left on time as we waited for our flight. The food was good. There is no inflight entertainment.I booked on-line from South Africa, and had no problems in this regard.

Taxis (Pre-paid)

by PierreZA

Pre-paid taxis from airportsI find this option a much easier and cheaper alternative than to try and find a taxi outside the airport. The pre-paid taxis can be booked at a counter in the arrivals hall.I have made use of this service in Mumbai, Chennai and Trivandrum.

3 GOOD reasons to not drive yourself

by 850prc

The tour books are united in one suggestion regarding India. All of them say that renting and driving one's self in a car is not a good idea. And after my couple of weeks motoring around the subcontinent, I'd agree. Never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never even consider doing this. The traffic is maddening, and if there are rules of the road, I can't tell you what they are. You'd be dodging cycles, pedestrians, elephants, cows, motorcycles, overloaded trucks, buses and God knows...

Forget Akbar. It's HAWA THE GREAT!

by 850prc

I highly recommend that you procure the services of a driver if you are doing India "on your own". It's the most hassle-free and safe way to insure that you get where you want to be, and that you get there on time. The title of this piece is "Forget Akbar", and I'm referring to Akbar the Great, one of the most famous of the Moghul rulers. And make no mistake, I mean no personal slight to Akbar - a man renowned for executing prisoners by having an elephant stamp their heads. I am just playfully paying homage to the man that we were lucky enough to have as OUR driver on our recent visit to Delhi, Uttar Pradash and Rajasthan, Mr. Hawa Singh.I can't tell you how to directly contact Hawa, but if you will get with Navin Pandey at Gatik Eventures (www.gatikeventures.com), he can set you up with Hawa as your driver. You'll never meet a more patient, dependable and helpful fellow. And although...

Flying to India

by PierreZA

There are many airlines flying to India. Emirates (via Dubai), fly to many Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Trivandrum, Chennai etc etc. I never had any bad experiences with Emirates, and a stopover in Dubai is often an added extra.Arriving at smaller airports like Kochi, is much more pleasent than Mumbai or Delhi.South African Airways have direct flights from Johannesburg to Mumbai.www.emirates.comwww.flysaa.com

Kingfisher Airlines

by PierreZA

Flying with Kingfisher was absolute joy. Departure from the domestic terminal in Mumbai was easy, as only two airlines operated from the specific terminal at that stage.Staff members meet you as you enter the airport building and assist you all the way with friendliness. The tariffs are very good, when I booked; the fare was about one third of competitors. Bookings can be made on the internet. Also impressive is the in-flight entertainment – you can watch many different channels of live satellite TV.I would recommend this airline anytime!

Car hire with a driver

by PierreZA

To hire a car and driver is another good option of transportation in India. It is important to fix the fare/price before you travel. You are very flexible with this mode of transport, as you can stop along the road if you find something interesting. You can organize this from your hotel or at a tourist agency, of which there is plenty in India.

Auto-rickshaws (Tuk-Tuk)

by PierreZA

Auto-rickshaws are a popular, easy and inexpensive way of getting around. I do find these drivers to be different from city to city. In Mumbai, you will not find these in the areas of Colaba, Marine Drive etc where most tourists spend their time; you will have to make use of the black & yellow taxis. When using the service of an auto-rickshaw, do decide on a fee before you get in. Unfortunately they sometimes have their own agenda, like taking you to emporiums etc where they receive commission – it is usually not that difficult to convince them that you are not interested. I met some great rickshaw drivers during my travels, who offered great service. They usually know the place quite well, and have a lot of knowledge. I had some good city tours with rickshaw drivers.
