Glass Bangle Figurines by DaDrifter Great story here - the idea of building a sculpture garden from waste was the brainchild of a gentleman who goes by the name of Nek Chand. He started the project as a hobby many years ago, clearing up part of a jungle to make a garden for himself. He kept his project a complete secret, often working late into the night, since it was started on land that was owned by the government. When the small garden was discovered by the authorities, it was debated wether to demolish the property to or just let it stay. Thankfully enough, his work was appreciated and a decision was taken to build a large sculpture garden with Mr Nek Chand at the helm of affairs. The garden was opened for public viewing in 1976. It now exhibits hundreds of human and animal forms, craftly sculpted out of regular city waste, such as broken earthenware, electrical items, drums, jute bags, broken glass, bottles, bangles, pebbles etc. It is difficult to capture the true feel of this garden in pictures - it is serene, spooky, dungeon like, mystical, almost like a dream, a fantasy land ... and a lot more. by DaDrifter Chandigarh is also a great place to see some unique gardens - nothing like a brisk morning walk by the lake side or in one of the many gardens that are scattered across the city. Very few cities in India offer such a rich variety of Flora - streets lined with flowering trees - abundance of bright yellow, pink, red, orange and purple ... ummmm ... I could live here forever. The Bougainvillea Garden, is a 20 acre garden located in Sector 10. As the name suggests, the garden is devoted to hundreds of varieties of a Bougainvillea. The Zakir Rose Garden located in Sector 16, is the largest of its kind in Asia. It has nearly 17000 plants covering 1500 (!!!!) varities of roses. Leave a Comment

by DaDrifter The Sukhna Lake is a large manmade lake located close to the Rock Garden at Chandigarh. The three square kilometre lake is the favoured picnic spot of Chandigarh families. Paddle boats can be hired at the boating club attached to the lake. There are a few shops located within the lake complex that sell souvenirs and handicrafts. There is also a cafe run by Chandigarh Tourism that serves good South Indian and Continental snacks. Leave a Comment

by DaDrifter Yadavindra Gardens are located at Pinjore, about 20 kms from Chandigarh, on the road leading to Shimla. These stepped Mughal gardens are located on the foothills of the Shivalik ranges. Haryana Tourism runs a hotel and restaurant within the garden complex. The outer walls of the gardens are covered with thick creepers. The garden is believed to have been designed by Nawab Fidai Khan in the 17th century and the Mughal design of charbagh is evident in the descending streams of water running through the gardens. Many song and dance sequences from Indian movies of yesteryears have been filmed at the Pinjore gardens :) Leave a Comment Address: PinjoreDirections: On the Chandigarh-Simla road

One of the Many Roses by SmileyLeSa The Rose Garden even in December had close to the 1500 varieties of roses in bloom. The rose garden is simply stunning and beautiful. All the rose beds are labeled with the name of each type of rose. For the horticulturist lover it would be a great treat to see so many types of roses in one place. Honestly, I never would have imagined that such a wide variety of roses would exist. It’s also a great opportunity to practice some microphotography. I took many close-up shots of individual buds and flowers. Leave a Comment

Chandigarh rock garden is an epitome of creativity and innovation. It is a unique garden that consists of various art objects. But the best part about the rock garden is that each of its artwork has been made by using industrial & urban waste. It is located in Sector 1 between the Capitol Complex and Sukhna Lake. The credit for laying its foundation goes to Nek Chand, who was the then Road Inspector in the Engineering Department of Chandigarh Capital Project. Rock garden has been established in the form of an open-air exhibition hall. The garden houses sculptures made by using a variety of different discarded waste materials like frames, mudguards, forks, handle bars, metal wires, play marbles, porcelain, auto parts, broken bangles etc. Rock garden in Chandigarh, India is a unique creation and connoisseurs come from different parts of the world to see this amazing garden

Rock Garden and Me by SmileyLeSa The Rock Garden is a creative work of genius using broken plates, bangles, tiles, and bathroom fixtures among other things to create what is a work of art. You must stop by and see the Rock Garden if you are in Chandigarh. The Garden has actually expanded quite a bit since my last visit 10 years ago. My favorite sculptures are the little girl statues made out of an assorted color arrangement of broken glass bangles. I suppose its rooted somewhere in my childhood, because even then I thought they were really neat. Leave a Comment

Outside the Milk Factory by SmileyLeSa The Verka Milk Factory is a great place to stop for some flavored milk when you first enter Chandigarh. This sweetened Almond flavored milk brought back memories of childhood trips to India. The only difference the milk is now served in juice-type boxes, instead of the glass milk bottles I remember. The milk still tasted great, but I missed the glass bottle. Leave a Comment

Timber Trail Cable Car by SmileyLeSa Timber Trail offers a picturesque view by way of a cable care. Take a cable car to the mountain peak and have a cup of coffee at the other end, take some scenic pictures, or go for a hike. There is a great scenic view from the mountain, which offers wonderful photo opportunities. Going out on the cable car was no problem. Getting back we had to wait in line for close to 1 hour. We lost some time, because we stopped here on our way to Shimla. Leave a Comment
