The Indira Ghandi International airport is located about 25-60 mn drive (depends on the traffic) from Connaught Place, central New Delhi. If nobody is waiting for you (hotel shuttle, friends, . . . ), the best is to take a pre-paid taxi, (300Rs to the centre) you will be directed to a car and the cab driver takes you to the pre-defined place; no rip off, no conning!
From the domestic airport, same system, but it is located closer, so you will pay 180Rs.
There are renovation works at the International airport (and it will last for a few months (I was there in Feb. 2008)) and it is a real mess, specially on departures from Delhi; but despite this, very messy appearance, you go through rather quickly, and I was surprised to be on the other side of the customs within 30 mn from arrival there.
Domestic airport is quiet, efficient, but there are often delays or cancellations. . .

One of the cheapest companies flying to India (Delhi and Mumbai) from Spain is Royal Jordanian. The flight is like 5 hours adn then we chosed to stop and spent 2 days in Petra. Amman-Delhi was like maybe 5 hours more(i can't remember).

Delhi’s airport is the Indira Gandhi International Airport which serves both international and domestic travel. It is one of the busiest airports in South Asia with a recorded 8.5 million passengers passing through it in 2004. Some 35 airlines also fly to Delhi. The airport is around 23kms south west of the city. There is a free transfer shuttle between the terminals which operates 24 hours and local transport from the airport can be found in autorickshaws, taxi’s and privately operated buses.

The Airport/ airports at Delhi have been nowhere near what they should be. The aiports- Domestic and International, have been congested for passengers and congested for flights. Basically the whole thing was old and crumbling.
However, the good news is that after much delay, the old terminals have been rennovated, for immediate use, and a new set of modern terminals are being constructed and should be ready by 2010. There is also talk of an additional airport in a different corner of Delhi- well- outside Delhi, to ease the budren. But that may still be some years away.
There has been some debate on the route that the Government has chosen to take- ie- privatisation. Job losses and other factors have to be weighed. However, whichever the route, the fact that there will be a new airport in a few years, is reason enough to cheer.
There has been much construction activity of late at all the airport terminals, causing some inconvenience to passengers, especially at the international departure terminal. However, the work is now finally over and transiting has become noticably easier. There are also more check-in counters, new baggage handling equipment, which spares us- finally- the ordeal of lining up in the baggage screening queue. GMR-Fraport is the company that has been developing the new plans for Delhi airport.
There are also plans to connect the airport to central Delhi via a high speed rail network, and work on that has begun already and will be operational by 2010, in time for the commonwealth games. Itw ill allow travellers to check-in at the train station itself.

The Domestic terminal 1B has a waiting lounge upstairs. Frequent fliers/ business class travellers can use the facility to wait. Also, mastercard gold card holders or above have access. The lounge can be a bit crowded at times, but there is plenty to eat and drink...

    Take a rickshaw.

But you should have iron nerves when your driver zigzags between cars, mopeds, cows, other rickshaws, bicycles, ... or any other obstacle.

Before taking a rickshaw, you should bargain about the price. It is some kind of national sport. Never accept the first price.

  • Delhi's Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport is 16 km from the city. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is a few km further from the domestic terminal. Domestic and international airlines connect Delhi with all parts of the country and the world.

The frustration of passing thru Delhis domestic and international airports is a common story amongst travellers. Infact, thats true for most big cities in India, where the airports were built a long way back and have not been upgraded much since. However, now with the huge boom in inbound tourists and domestic tourists, as well the number of airlines taking to the skies in India, the airports have been stretched beyond a level where you can let matters be. Also, budget airlines have made air travel affordable finally and there is a huge surge in the number of people flying, many of them first time flyers too...
Now finally, things are pointing in the right direction. The airports in Delhi/Mumbai/Hyderabad have been privatised, with consortiums ready to build and run new terminals.
Apart from cosmetic changes to the existing facilities. They have big plans.
By 2008, there will be an additional runway (one of the longest in Asia)- A380 capable and CAT3B compliant- to spare travellers the chaos of winter fog. There will be a new terminal, for domestic/international operations, which will be ready by 2010- in time for the Delhi Commonwealth Games, which will eventually become a domestic terminal. This terminal will handle 37million passengers annually, have 130 check in counters, and 74 aerobridges. An intermediate low cost airline terminal, is also scheduled to come up by 2008.
The existing international terminal will be demolished by 2015 to make way for a new international terminal. The existing domestic terminal will be razed to make way for a cargo terminal.
The eventual capacity of the airport will be 100 million passengers annually.
There is also a plan in place to have a high speed train link- connecting the airport to Connaught Place, in the heart of the city. The Delhi Metro system is already working on linking the airport to its network by 2010.
Big plans, and its high time we heard them. Hopefully, in the near future, the horror tales about flying into these airports will be a thing of the past

Jet Airways was just another airline, which I couldn't book online, because they only accepted Indian Credit Cards. But there is a trick.... go to ebookers.com and get your ticket there. Price is not much different.

I paid GBP 271.17 to fly from Singapore to Delhi (and back).
