Favorite thing: Every time I visited Delhi I made it a point to visit Jama Masjid, although a prayer can be offered at any mosque and it holds no religious significance as such, but the size of this overwhelming structure subdues all your senses. Situated in the ancient town of Old Delhi, the Jama Masjid is one of the grand architectural examples of the Mughal era.
Built by Emperor Shahjahan, the mosque was originally called the Masjid-i-Jahanuma or "Mosque commanding a view of the world". This part of Delhi still retains the old-world charm of markets in Mughal times.
Jama Masjid faces the Red Fort and is built on a plain that is higher that the Red Fort. The Emperor wanted the mosque to be on a higher plain than the fort as a mark of obedience and respect to Allah.
