    Dirty but ...

by diageva Updated Aug 1, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Its true that is dirty ... you will find rubbish in the great part of Delhi, but there are parts, of new Delhi where everything is clean.
The white walls of Connaught Place where full of red of something they chew and then thow from the mouth making the wall really dirty and ugly :)
But people don't look to be dirty they look always clean and handsome :)))

    Holi Festival

by Shelleya Written Jan 10, 2004

Holi, usually around the beginning of March, is a fun festival to celebrate in the presence of friends and family. If wandering around neighborhoods in Delhi during this time, pay close attention to the rooftops. Kids (and some bigger "kids") love to throw water balloons at pedestrians or shoot water guns. It hurts to get nailed by a water balloon from the top of a 3-story building.

I recommend reading William Dalrymple's, The City of Djinns - A year in Delhi. It has been a wonderful experience to relax and read this book in the Delhi breeze, but you ought to read it before coming to get to really appreciate this city. It presents the reader with a lot of background history and information without ever being boring. Dalrymple has written with a lot of humour and clearly affection for this place.

    * Btw. Two of my favorite pages on VT about Delhi are by husain and SirRichard.

    Mosque etiquette

by grets Written May 30, 2005

Shoes were not allowed inside the mosques, they had to be either removed, or as here in the Moti Masjid, covered with these cloth 'bags'. They may look funny, but they do the job.

    Sacred Cows

by grets Written May 30, 2005

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This was the first of many cows we saw wandering the streets of Delhi. The cow is sacred in India, so they are 'King of the Road', and allowed to wander freely. People will feed them.

    Welcome to India

On arrival in India we were each given a ganda, the Indian equivalent of a floral lei, by the Sita representative - the people who were to look after us during our travels in India in 1988.

    Campa Cola

by SirRichard Updated Oct 28, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Campa Cola was the substitute of Coca Cola when I was there. I guess nowadays you could find Coca Cola there too, but in the 90s this was it. It didn't taste too bad anyway!
