A nice and modern airport .We filled in customs forms on the plane and it was an easy trip through Immigration. Lots of wickets open. We tried 4 AtM's before exiting the airport but none would take our card. Now we are setting out with no local currency. ( later on our second trip through the airport we see a Citibank ATM . Must have been too jet-legged to see it)There are alos Money Exchange counters

Our pre booked ride was a no show . There are lots of metered cabs outside and prepaid Taxis too . The prepaid yellow and black taxis are pretty beat up . We went with a Muru cab . They were really good.

Outside Delhi airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the busiest airport in South Asia. The airport is located 23 km to the south/west of the city. Terminal 1 is for domestic flights, terminal 2 and 3 for international flights.

DEL International Terminal,
Indira Gandhi International Airport,
New Delhi 110 037.
+91 124 3376000.

An useful feature on this airports webpage where you can see your complaints. Go ahead and complain and see if your complaint is on the Passenger complaint list. Anyway, DEL airport is the best among the airports I have visited in India (CCU, JAI, BOM and GOA). Very clean to be in India.

Delhi is well connected with most Indian cities and all major cities of the world through the air route. Indira Gandhi International Airport is the Delhi airport. It is the busiest airport in India in terms of number of daily flights and the second-busiest in India in terms of number of passengers. In 2007, the Airport had 23 million passengers annually and the present expansion program is likely to increase the same to 100 million annual passengers by 2030. It is served by all domestic carriers like the Indian airlines, Kingfisher, Kingfisher Red, Spice jet, GoAir, Jet Airways, JetLite, Indigo, MDLR, Jagson etc. and all important internation air companies.

IGI, just up ahead

I had preconceived notions of what to expect at Indira Gandhi airport. I'd seen photos of Delhi, I'd heard of its chaotic way. For some reason, I expected a similar scene at IGI airport....massive snarling lines in immigration, lots and lots of "may I see your papers please" type stops.

I was totally wrong. IGI is a modern, well-run and organized airport. And, that's good news for you, the international visitor. A majority of overseas flights to India end up at IGI.

Indira Gandhi airport is one of two airports in Delhi, the other being Palam. Palam is an airport hosting domestic flights, whereas IGI is primarily an international flights hub. If you are IN India and are flying to somewhere else in India, you will probably be be using Palam. Keep that in mind when you get in the taxi. :)

IGI itself is some 20 km southwest of central New Delhi, and getting into the city by cab can take anywhere from 30 minutes to darn near an hour, depending on the time of day. We arrived in the late evening, and it was a quickie for us over to our hotel. Cab fare from IGI into the city will be something like 300 Rs. There apparently is a desk where you can purchase a prepaid cab ride into New Delhi, which will immunize you from any cab driver shenanigans involving taking you to the wrong hotel, etc.

One little thing... I was warned to not accept "help" from people hanging around the airport looking to give you tour advice, hotel advice, and such. Apparently, more than a few of these folks are scammers, and they don't have your best interest at heart, so to speak. But, that being said, I was not approached in any way by such persons upon our arrival or departure. Maybe I just looked like I already knew where I was going. :)

Taxi Delhi airport

Unless you have a pre arranged transport at Delhi's IGI airport you will require a taxi. There is just one office which you have to call in to pay for your journey and obtain a confirmation document which outside in the chaotic taxi area, the driver will require. Ensure you have the details of the hotel you are going to on a piece of paper and a handful of cash by the time you get to the window of this office as these guys are under pressure and dont tolerate the tourist who dithers. You will be pestered by young men many of whom are not authorised porters, to carry your bags so you will need to be increadibly resiliant to keep them from taking hold of a bag or two. they will even demand money if you make the mistake of putting down your bags whist opening the trunk of your car as they will be on it and in a split second be "helping" you to load your car or taxi. In the taxi area, it is wise to get near to the uniformed gentleman who directs the taxi's, as he gets very disgruntled with these young men and a word from him sends them away for a few moments at least. Be careful not to be called from the often long line-up at the taxi office, to the limo service office alongside. They initially say they are cheap, but you will soon find this is not the case

It was a long holiday here in Thailand when I went to India. It was hard to find any seat but I was lucky to get on Thai Airways. The cost was only 14,600 Baht. It was over 15,000 on Air India. I was surprised to know that because if Thai Airways was cheaper, why on earth Thai people would fly Air India?!!
