Getting to Agatti, the only airport in Lakshadweep

For now, there is only Indian Airlines who have a daily flight to and from Agatti. The flights are often delayed or cancel, so prepare to spend one more night in Cochin for your inbound itinerary. Reservation system is quite funny. The online reservation is rather orientative, because they never seem to know exactly how many available seats there are. In Agatti, there was an old man with a notebook (paper, I mean) and that was the "reservation system" we've used for our return flight.Indian Airlines fly an old funny-looking Dornier 228. The captain is a local celebrity. After take off, he hands over to the co-pilot and joins the passenger for a cup of cofee and some joking. He really is a very funny and kind person. From Agatti to Bangaram by boat

When you book your vacation to Bangaram, you are given the option to choose if you want to be transfered by boat or helicopter. Funny enough, the helicopter is most of the time busy with medical emergency or transfering politicians to and from Cochin. So you'll most likely be transfered by boat.This is the less pleasant experience one might have in the Lakshadweep. Minutes after leaving the Agatti dock, the boat looses the protection of the reef and enters in the open sea. Waves are quite high, much higher than the tiny jetty and, for the next hour, you get to discover how religious you can actually be.You pray for survival before and after every huge wave being crossed by the skilled captain.Eventually, you arrive in Bangaram and realize that such a paradise could not and should not be reached without some effort from your part.

There are various options that one can choose to get into Lakshadweep. You can either come by flight or ship into these islands but see to it you book the tickets well in advance as flights and ships go always full during peak season. Transportation within Lakshadweep is by boats.

Flights operate from Kochi (Cochin) to Agatti island for Bangaram. From Agatti, passengers are transported to Bangaram by boat. There is also a helicopter service linking Agatti to other islands. If you prefer going by ship, vessels ply between Kochi (Cochin) and Lakshadweep.
