    Meat With A Difference

by anilpradhanshillong Written Feb 10, 2013

If you fancy meat with a difference, try out this shop on top of Durtlang Mountain, on your way out of Aizawl town. For a translation of the Mizo words, perhaps, your Mizo friend may be able to help you out.

The Millennium Mall is the pride of Aizawl. Constructed recently, this multi-storied structure boasts of elevators and haute-couture. Besides the normal ladies’ garments and accessories, quite a few shops deal in men’s wear and handloom products. For high quality handloom items, try out ‘C. Awmpui Handloom’ shop (Tele: +919436140386; 0389-2311970).

The New Market is in the open, a broad road lined with shops on both sides. Here you find clothes, sandals, shoes, bags and other accessories. It is a good introduction to Bara Bazaar below.

    Aizawl Market-Bara Bazar

by anilpradhanshillong Written Feb 10, 2013

There is no dearth of markets in Aizawl town. With the markets of the South-Eastern countries like Bangkok and Burma so close, there is a glut of fashionable items in Aizawl. My personal estimate was that 80 % of the items sold in New Market and in the Millennium Mall were for the ladies and all of them were from abroad.

The Bara Bazaar is for the daily necessities of life. You get fresh vegetables, fruits, spices, condiments, pork, beef, mutton, chicken and fish. Most of the shop owners are ladies and haggling a daily necessity. Surprisingly, the market was clean, slightly dark at places but no foul smell or uncleared garbage lying around. This is just by the side of and below the New Market.
