    Appachi: Chettinad Restaurant

Situated within walking distance from the Quartier Francais on Rue rangoupillai is Appachi, a typical South Indian Restaurant, very seldom visited by tourists . Most of the diners are Indian Men and an occasional family.
The service is good and the food is palatable but must ask for less chili to be added since chettinad cuisine is known for its fire.

    Favorite Dish: Mutter Masala
    Coriandar Dosai
    Parotta
    Lime Soda
    Lassi

Rendevous: Sea Food platter for two

by traceyspacey Written Jan 28, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We had been traveling for a while and after several attempts at celebrating my boyfriend Darren's birthday we came here.

He ordered the seafood platter for himself and I ordered a dish for me. The seafood platter was huge, enough for at least 2 people if not more. It was very very tasty. 600 Rupees for the platter.

Rendevous, is set on the rooftop with chequered table cloths on the tables. There is a a/c room available as well. Beer and wine available. Dishes excluding the platter 100-275 rupees

    Favorite Dish: Seafood platter

    LE CLUB ROCKING FRENCH BAR/RESTAURANT
    1 more image

What do you get when you mix a grand French villa, an exotic garden, a sous-chef with four assistants, friendly staff and a gourmet entrepreneur?

(LE CLUB, THE BISTRO, L'INDOCHINE) is one of the best restaurant/bar I've ever been in Pondicherry. This atmoshphere is unique in India in this type. The food is excellent, and all the imported wines and liquours are served here. The exotic music, with wonderful slides projection, brings a great ambiance. It's a rocking bar as well.

Favorite Dish: Chateaubriand à la béarnaise.
    Shrimps Cocktails.
    Chocolate mousse.

    Satsanga: Tasty Steak

by traceyspacey Written Apr 11, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

They really know how to cook their steaks here. Tasty and good value. The wine selection is pretty good, which is a welcome change having travelled through India for a while. The restaurant is set in a courtyard of a rambling colonial house, part of which is under cover. The staff are friendly, speaking both French and English. I have been told by other travellers that the bacon sandwiches for breakfast are fantastic

Favorite Dish: Steak in red wine with mashed potato, fantastic with a glass of red wine.

If you can make out from the pic ur lucky: South Indian delicacy

by alycat Written Jan 30, 2007
    The restro

Authentic south indian food, what they call the 'thali', served on a leaf.

Sorry folks I dont remember the name of this restro but as I said if you can make out from the pic ur lucky. Its an old house converted in to a restro, gr8 interiors.

Favorite Dish: I got to make my own 'paan' (betel leaf) after the meal. Ingredients are spread out at the exit door and you can add what you want.

    Rendezvous: Civilized Dining

by tayloretc Written Apr 3, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The main dining hall is long and high-vaulted, and with the furniture really looks continental. There’s dining on the roof, too, but we were there for lunch and it was hot…

I'd heard raves about this place. It's supposed to be popular with the longer-term foreigners, and it had been recommended by a few people independently. I thought it was okay, not sure whether I just had extremely high expectations, or perhaps got there on an off day. The Coq au Vin was quite good, but the wine recommended wasn't great, and wasn't a good match. The chocolate mousse had the texture of marshmallow, although the flavor was good.

    Sea Gulls: Easy Evening

by tayloretc Written Apr 3, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sea Gulls is located on the beach at the very end of the French part of town. It’s large-ish, with seating both on the roof and in a large yard. When we were there the roof was closed, but supposedly you can see the Bay of Bengal from there. At least you can hear it from the yard. The place was full, with a healthy mix of locals and foreigners.

The food was decent – nothing spectacular, but good, with substantial portions. The chicken tikka starter was tikka enough to make my (Indian) travel companion cry. (Not in a bad way.) The beer was cold, and the service good enough to keep it coming. I had Poulet Roti (roast chicken, with a brown sauce with mushrooms), my companion had something similar, but “mexicaine.”

Sitting on the lawn had one problem – there wasn’t enough light to see your food by. Otherwise, it was a nice place to spend a relaxing evening.

Satsanga: "If you only eat once in Pondi..."

by tayloretc Written Apr 3, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place is recommended by one guidebook with “If you only eat once in Pondicherry, make it here.” I have to agree. We went for breakfast and decided to go back for lunch (and probably would have gone back for dinner if we hadn’t had to get back). The breakfast (eggs and toast) was well done, just the right amount, and nicely presented. The lunches (one fish with hollandaise sauce, one steak with blue cheese sauce) were excellent. The waiter also recommended a very good wine.

All the seating is outside in and around a courtyard. Most of it is covered by south Indian-style, high roofs, which keep out the sun but let in the breezes.

Note that the photo was taken very early during breakfast - the place gradually filled up and it was packed for lunch.

Salt and Pepper: Great place for a date!!

A great restaurant. After eating those tasteless preparations of Aurobindo Ashram, this place's food tastes like heaven.

I had my first date here with a girl from Slovenia, Nada Odar!!

Favorite Dish: French fries with coffee.

    Banyan Tree: Eclectic

    My hut in the resort

We stayed at the Banyan Tree resort and they had a busy restro, and though we did not eat any of our meals, it looked crowded with tourists, so I guess the food was good.
