Satsanga: "If you only eat once in Pondi..."
This place is recommended by one guidebook with “If you only eat once in Pondicherry, make it here.” I have to agree. We went for breakfast and decided to go back for lunch (and probably would have gone back for dinner if we hadn’t had to get back). The breakfast (eggs and toast) was well done, just the right amount, and nicely presented. The lunches (one fish with hollandaise sauce, one steak with blue cheese sauce) were excellent. The waiter also recommended a very good wine.
All the seating is outside in and around a courtyard. Most of it is covered by south Indian-style, high roofs, which keep out the sun but let in the breezes.
Note that the photo was taken very early during breakfast - the place gradually filled up and it was packed for lunch.
Hotel Mass: Fish Finger is the Best
Hotel Mass has 3 restaurants, one without alcohol & smoke, another without smoke and other you can smoke and drink. the one in which you can smoke and drink is a multi cusine restaurant and the other with only drink is a of Chettinad Style. These restaurants are one of my favourite and I used to visit there frequently.

On upto the quality as before. The service seems to be lacking much! I could see people leaving in haste before ordering!! No pleasant restauranting experience!!. But still their Fish finger quality is good.
Favorite Dish: I love their Fish Finger, no one can beat their fish finger @ Pondy.
Ajantha: Good Indian Food, Nice View of Bay of Bengal
At the far (south) end of Beach Road is Ajantha. Along with rooms on offer, they have a nice restaurant. Indoor AC seating and outdoor rooftop terrace seating overlooking the Bay of Bengal are available.
We were staying a couple of doors down and arrived in town very late. The nice people at Ajantha accommodated us for dinner. We sat outside and enjoyed watching the activity and the people walking along the Promenade.
We had the reshmi kebab and butter chicken along with rice and naan. Both dishes were filling and very good.
This is a great place for dinner - get there early for outdoor seating. They also have a separate bar area.
Sea Gulls: Easy Evening
Sea Gulls is located on the beach at the very end of the French part of town. It’s large-ish, with seating both on the roof and in a large yard. When we were there the roof was closed, but supposedly you can see the Bay of Bengal from there. At least you can hear it from the yard. The place was full, with a healthy mix of locals and foreigners.
The food was decent – nothing spectacular, but good, with substantial portions. The chicken tikka starter was tikka enough to make my (Indian) travel companion cry. (Not in a bad way.) The beer was cold, and the service good enough to keep it coming. I had Poulet Roti (roast chicken, with a brown sauce with mushrooms), my companion had something similar, but “mexicaine.”
Sitting on the lawn had one problem – there wasn’t enough light to see your food by. Otherwise, it was a nice place to spend a relaxing evening.
Rendezvous: Civilized Dining
The main dining hall is long and high-vaulted, and with the furniture really looks continental. There’s dining on the roof, too, but we were there for lunch and it was hot…
I'd heard raves about this place. It's supposed to be popular with the longer-term foreigners, and it had been recommended by a few people independently. I thought it was okay, not sure whether I just had extremely high expectations, or perhaps got there on an off day. The Coq au Vin was quite good, but the wine recommended wasn't great, and wasn't a good match. The chocolate mousse had the texture of marshmallow, although the flavor was good.
La Terrasse: Great Pizza, Good Breakfast, Slow Service
Very laid back and popular place. Open for breakfast (until 11:30), lunch, and dinner. Great pizzas, good salads, and good breakfasts. Tried the banana & chocolate crepes. Had to remind the waiter several times - by the time it arrived it was ice cold. Service is slow and if the waiter doesn't write it down, your order may not be correct. Such a shame, because overall it was very enjoyable. Since we had plenty of time to spare, we had lunch there once and breakfast twice! Very good value. Indian and continental dishes available.
Closed on Wednesdays.
Rendezvous: Not So "French" French Cuisine
Set in an old bungalow, Rendezvous has a roof-top garden and a separate AC room for dining. The tables were set a little too close together and we were (unfortunately) seated closest to the kitchen and in the path of all the waiters.
Since Rendezvous specializes in classic French food, I had gone with high expectations. The menu is extensive with several daily specials including various fish and shellfish. I selected the coq au vin which was so disappointingly bland. I tied the tiramisu for dessert, which did not resemble any tiramisu I've ever had.
In addition to French food, the restaurant serves Chinese, Indian, and Italian cuisine. And therein lies the problem. Many restaurants that try to please everyone end up serving mediocre food. In addition, the prices were higher than average for Pondicherry.
Choco-La: THE Place For Your Chocolate Fix!
While strolling around the French Quarter, we came upon Choco-La. With a name like that, of course, we had to check it out!
There was a huge variety of chocolates in all forms - mousse, truffles, pastries, cakes, candy, etc., etc. Everything is hand-made, fresh, and so nicely presented.
We each tried about 3 different things - all were delicious. My favorites were the truffles and the little Melting Pots, which were appropriately named!
If you come across Choco-La during your wanderings, stop in for something sweet! If you love chocolate, make sure to seek out Choco-La!!
The Seagull: Spicy, only spicy, poor taste
Probably in the most beautifull place in Pondicherry, with a fantastic sea view terrace, you will discover the seagull. It is a government restaurant, place is amazing, service is average, and food is so spicy that you can't know what you eat. I have tried chicken byriani, and another time some fish with gravy, it came with the same chilly taste. So it is a place just to have a drink, in front of the sea.
Favorite Dish: The best dish was the kingfisher beer !

Le Cafe: Great Setting On The Bay Of Bengal
Open 24 hours and located between the Promenade and the Bay of Bengal, this is a fantastic place to sit and enjoy a cappuccino while watching the sunset. There are only a few tables outside so you'll need to get there early and jostle for a table but it's so relaxing once you sit.
It's great for people-watching as well - all of the food stalls pop up on the beach and hawkers start selling their wares as friends and families walk along the sand. (The hawkers don't bother you at the cafe.) Tried some less than average sweets but worth a visit for the sunset! It does get very windy so bring a sweater.
Saravana Bhavan: Incredibly Inexpensice South Indian Tucker
a typical south indian vegetarian restaurant offering the midday meals as well as many vegetarian dishes
Favorite Dish: The midday meal served on a banana leaf with rice, pappad, and many condiments and curries were about one dollar each..
clean hygienic and many indian families eating at lunch time
Rendevous: Sea Food platter for two
We had been traveling for a while and after several attempts at celebrating my boyfriend Darren's birthday we came here.
He ordered the seafood platter for himself and I ordered a dish for me. The seafood platter was huge, enough for at least 2 people if not more. It was very very tasty. 600 Rupees for the platter.
Rendevous, is set on the rooftop with chequered table cloths on the tables. There is a a/c room available as well. Beer and wine available. Dishes excluding the platter 100-275 rupees
Favorite Dish: Seafood platter

LE CLUB, THE BISTRO, L'INDOCHINE: The best Restaurant/Bar in pondicherry
What do you get when you mix a grand French villa, an exotic garden, a sous-chef with four assistants, friendly staff and a gourmet entrepreneur?
(LE CLUB, THE BISTRO, L'INDOCHINE) is one of the best restaurant/bar I've ever been in Pondicherry. This atmoshphere is unique in India in this type. The food is excellent, and all the imported wines and liquours are served here. The exotic music, with wonderful slides projection, brings a great ambiance. It's a rocking bar as well.
Favorite Dish: Chateaubriand à la béarnaise.

Favorite Dish: Coffee- I love my coffee
Satsanga: Tasty Steak
They really know how to cook their steaks here. Tasty and good value. The wine selection is pretty good, which is a welcome change having travelled through India for a while. The restaurant is set in a courtyard of a rambling colonial house, part of which is under cover. The staff are friendly, speaking both French and English. I have been told by other travellers that the bacon sandwiches for breakfast are fantastic
Favorite Dish: Steak in red wine with mashed potato, fantastic with a glass of red wine.
