Taking photos...

by Donna_in_India

1. If there are signs saying “No photos”, don’t take pictures! (Some airports & bridges, Military Bases, etc. are off-limits!)2. Learn how to use your camera before the trip. If there are signs saying “No flash”, make sure you know how to use the camera without it.3. If you see a couple or family where one person taking pictures of the other(s), offer to take a picture of both/all of them. Maybe they’ll reciprocate.4. Don't take pictures of worshippers.5. Ask BEFORE you take a photo of someone. (It's easy to gesture with your camera if someone doesn't understand english.) Most people will say yes. I've rarely come across anyone that doesn't want to have his/her photo taken. Share the photo in your playback screen - children especially love this and it's a good way to make new friends! I've had alot of fun with people and their reactions to being photographed and then seeing themselves.6....

Women Travellers...

by Donna_in_India

1. Unless on the beaches of Goa, it's best to dress conservatively. No shorts, short skirts, or shirts displaying too much cleavage. You will have to endure uncomfortable stares, and sometimes comments and even "accidental" touching. (Capris & t-shritsare fine.)2. If someone does touch you or becomes aggressive, yell LOUDLY. They will likely run away and you will attract the attention of others who will come to your rescue.3. Avoid walking in deserted areas at night or odd hours.4. Avoid drinking alcohol in excess.5. Never accept food or drinks from strangers.6. Carry tissue/toilet paper. You never know when you'll need it!7. Where available, use women's only areas/compartments on public transportation. NEVER ride in the general men's compartment.8. If you do go out to clubs/bars, NEVER leave your drink unattended and always make sure you have transportation back to your hotel...

Travel Within India

by Donna_in_India

1. If not taking a prepaid taxi or a metered taxi/rickshaw, negotiate the fare before taking off.2. If spending alot of time with a taxi driver (or any driver), it helps if he speaks and understands basic English.3. Don't drive on highways at night.4. When travelling by train, chain and lock your luggage under your berth. Don't keep anything valuable near the window. Carry plenty of water and fruit, and don't eat or drink anything offered by a stranger.5. Be aware of travel warnings. Some areas are considered unsafe for foreigners.6. Always carry your passport with you. Put a sticky note inside with the local telephone number of your Consulate.7. Keep a copy of your passport/visa separate from the original.8. For women, where available, use women's only areas/compartments on public transportation. NEVER ride in the general men's compartment.9. For women, if travelling alone on the train,...

Warning - Northern India Hotels in Winter

by RollingOkie

Hotels in India vary widely from really, really bad - just like everywhere else - to incredibly luxurious - just like everywhere else. One thing I think I would have liked to have known before going was that, in northern India, such as towns like Delhi, where the temperatures can get quite cool, but it doesn't snow in a normal year, there is no heat in rooms where there is no air-conditioning. That's because the heating unit is contained in the air-conditioning unit. So, if you want heat, you need to get a room with A/C. Also, in the cheaper hotels, hot water means warm water and it may be hard to come by. I can remember, on my fourth attempt to get some hot water in one day, asking the manager if I needed to help him up the stairs to get the hot water turned on. There's a point where you can get tired of asking for basics at some hotels in India. For the most part, though, when I was a...

Warning - Watch The Food

by RollingOkie

Normally, I'm a pretty healthy person. But, there have been times when I went somewhere and my body reacted strongly to the environment. India was that kind of place. I'm not blaming anyone. I'm just saying that you never know when that one weird microbe will ruin your whole day. Take a few basic pills with you and get traveler's insurance. This is the vegetable chow mien that I believe was the start of my physical undoing in India. I noticed that it was significantly spicy. After eating at the restaurant a second night, I became very ill. I think the proper medical term for my condition was Poopin' and Pukin' and, since I figure that gives you a good picture of my illness, I won't provide details. I will say that it did make an impact on my stay in Delhi. For the 36 hours after the second restaurant visit, I rarely left my hotel room. I spent that period trying to shake off the symptoms...

Warning - Trash / Filth Alert

by RollingOkie

This, I can never get used to. This picture is one that is all-too-common in India. Here, you can see a big heap of trash and some animals. Most of the time there are no Indians in the picture. I'm really not sure what this guy is doing. When I take a picture of some guy in a garbage dump, I try not to linger. Animals in garbage dumps is not uncommon in India. However, to put the whole thing in some perspective for my western friends, it is important to understand a couple of things. First, in India, the lives of animals are much the same as the lives of humans. That's why the vast, vast majority of Hindus are vegetarians. Second, it is important to support our animal friends by giving them the refuse that we don't want, especially cows, which are, for Hindus, sacred. It's something like having a pet, but on a higher social order. All animals are our friends (pets) and we should help...

Indian Visa

by RollingOkie

Remember to get your Indian Visa application and start working it before you buy your plane tickets and make lots of reservations. The Indian Visa is relatively complicated and a little pricey. I'd make sure I had the visa in hand. I have included info for U.S. By the way, it took over an hour to clear customs in Delhi. If you're being picked up at the airport, this could cause problems.

Mr. Feroz in Delhi, DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN!!!

by MikeySoft

I hired cars and drivers for parts of my Indian tour. The first place I hired a car was in Delhi. I'll had some problems which I'll update later and give advice on how to avoid the similar problems as I get time.In the mean time, DO NOT TRUST Mr. Feroz Ahmed Benaras in Delhi. To help you identfy him, His cell number is 9818193603 His office numbers are 011-23748401 and 011-23748402.It is a long story about Mr Feroz, Ahmed Benaras! I rented a car and driver from him. The problems started when the car came to take me to Amritsar. It was a different driver then the one I picked. The new one could not speak English very well. I called Mr Foroz and ask why did he not call me. He said he is too busy to call. To me, it met he did not care anymore once I paid. There are many examples like he did not book a hotel for one city like he said he would and in the itinerary. Instead he book extra...

Bottled water scam

by smirnofforiginal

This is by no means a scam unique to India - refilling and creatively resealing bottles of mineral water with... any old water.Always check the actual plastic seal (the bit that attaches the cap to the bottle until the first time the cap is twisted when it snaps the link).A gentle squeeze of the bottle can sometimes give you an indication of whether it has been refilled.

Traveling in Delhi

by FMJ666

From Indira Ghando International to central New Delhi : I was stung Rs2500 for an auto rickshaw after having been re-routed via the National Monuments, not that I had asked. It is best to pay at the pre-paid booth to avoid being ripped off. The return journey for example cost Rs200. Best to clarify the precise journey with the driver, I had wanted to go to Buddha Jayanti Park which is en-route to the city centre but despite my protestations my driver delivered me to Connaught Place. Connaught Place is the centre of Delhi and a cesspit of Kashmiri swindlers from the young ‘’students’’ to the more obvious dodgers. Their main aim being to get you into the rug shops. Best to be avoided if you don’t want to part with a large amount of cash before you have even started. Auto rickshaws were the easiest and quickest method of transport and aside from my initial sting from the airport were very...
