Best time to visit India-and why.

by lynnehamman

I am not sure exactly where to post this tip- so I will just do it here. When planning for a visit to India- be very aware of the seasons.India has a wide range of climatic variations across the country.Monsoon starts around July to September .The rains sweep across the country with daily torrential downpours and high possibility of floods. This makes travel difficult in all areas except the northwest. It affects almost all forms of transport, and air & rail delays can be expected. Duration of monsoons vary in different regions by several weeks. They also vary in severity. They also sometimes fail- which is a disaster. India needs the monsoon.Rajasthan (desert areas) is the the hottest area in summer- but wonderful any other time. The months from October to March are about the best times to visit as the weather is very pleasant with minimal rainfall in most places. Days are warm, but...

India: Touts..continuation

by K2NG

Not only do touts linger in train stations, they can be found around those government-accredited tourists agencies as well. These "operatives" usually work for smaller tourist agencies that sprout around the reputable ones. Instead of catching spill-overs from the big agencies, these smaller shops engage touts to "hijack" tourists, with the intention of preventing them from reaching the big agencies and at the same time, distracting these tourists with some fake information, telling them that this famous agency is not there anymore but has just shifted across the street. And these touts will gladly lead you across the street to their shops.Again, you got to be firm if you happened to be stuck in such situation where this bogus guy is trying to sell you a package and at the same time, keeps reassuring you that they are a government-accredited tourist shop. He will dish out a nice folder...

India: Trouts please! Not Touts!

by K2NG

In India, train has been the most prefered mode of transport for long distance traveling over land. Despite its highly unreliable timings, it is still relatively packed most of the time. If you ever want to get a train ticket in New Delhi Train station, do be firm and head to the International Tourist Bureau (or ITB) on the second floor straight, not left or right. Do not be taken in by some well-dressed gentleman trying to convince you that ITB is undergoing renovation and has been temporarily shifted across the street. I know it may seem rude , harsh or unfeeling to ignore an amiable-looking stranger, seemingly trying to tell you some good-will information. But you really have to steel-up your heart to do it to protect yourself! If not you will end up like me, being led across the street into one fishy-looking tourist shop that tried to rip my pockets off with its marked-up train...

A lot of independent business persons out there

by 850prc

India is a country of well over one billion people. From what I see, at least 100 million of them are independent businessmen and women, out there working on the streets. On the surface, this wouldn't quality as a warning. BUT, many of these independent business persons are "in sales", so to speak, and their income depends on how many people they can approach and sell something to out on the streets. They may be selling postcards, books, jewelry and even entertainment... but they can be quite aggressive, or should I more correctly say "persistent". I didn't see anyone who was violent, but YES, they were "persistent". And just for definition purposes, persistence taken to its zenith can equal annoying, right? The word used to describe these street sales persons is "tout", as in they're "touting" the merits of what they sell. Rajiv Rajawat, our terrific guide in Agra, had the following to...

Culture Shock

by travelinxs

On arrival head to any tourist areas, preferably away from the big cities, youre certain to find plenty of company to acclimatise and get over your culture shock. Considering its size, India is a very safe country to travel in. Ive been around both on public transport and recently by bicycle, and I cant think of one threatening moment. Its complete madness on first impressions, but a fun madness. Keep smiling, and in India the adage is so true, the world will smile with you. Good luck and enjoy.

Negotiate a fare

by lynnehamman

ALWAYS, when using an Auto-Rickshaw or Taxi, confirm a price before you depart. Most of the drivers are honest, but some do try it on, and can cause some unpleasantness. Also, don't let on if it is your first trip to India, for obvious reasons.Wherever possible- if you find a GOOD honest driver- try and get a mobile number from him, and use him if he is available. We did this, and managed to keep the same driver in a number of cities. They are only too happy to be of help to foreign visitors, and sometimes even give advice that one finds useful

Some common-sense travelling tips

by lynnehamman

When travelling around, by train or bus - do not accept food or drinks from a stranger. There have been some reports of tourists being drugged, and robbed this way.Always secure your luggage with a chain and lock on trains.especially overnight journeys.Drink only bottled water.( and drink a lot - dehydration happens easily in the heat of India), and make sure that the bottle is SEALED before drinking. When ordering drinks- NEVER take ice. Ice cubes are made from WATER-which is unsafe to drink unless from a bottled source.Never leave your passport lying around in a hotel room- keep it in a safe, or on your person.Replacing a passport is a long and tedious process.

Indian traffic

by MichaelFalk1969

Indian traffic is dangerous. In South India, the traffic is potentially a much greater risk than violent crime, malaria or wild animals, in my humble opinion. In the cities, often there is no recognizable or passable sidewalk, so as a pedestrian you basically have to share the street with the vehicles. If a street is two-lane or three-lane, it is seen more as a suggestion, and usually more vehicles try to squeeze in. Risky overtaking manouevres and high speed are very common. Car Hire - in the sense of self-drive - is virtually unknown, mostly you hire a care with a driver (at very reasonable rates). You can`t completely avoid taking the risks of Indian driving, but you can significantly reduce them if you use the train for long-distance travel.

violent monkeys

by MichaelFalk1969

Do not carry food when monkeys are near. The Indian monkeys are aggressive and will try to snatch it from you, maybe even bite or scratch you if you try to put up a fight. Especially at temples or other popular tourist places monkeys are abundant and should be respected. They don´t bother you if you don`t carry food. Monkeys are very common at Chamundi Hill and Karanji Lake Park in Mysore, Nandi Hill (near Bangalore), at the Virupaksha Temple in Hampi, at Gingee Fort (near Pondicherry) and at the cafe near the boating station of Periyar Lake National Park (to name but a few places).

MALARIA PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

by vaticanus

3.5 million Indians get malaria each year. Prophylaxis is year-round below 2000 meters, especially in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Karnataka. SOURCE: (MDTravelHealth.com). 64 degrees Fahrenheit (17,5 Celsius) is the threshold for mosquitoes.I've had malaria (Columbia) and it is highly debilitating and the headaches are agonizing. It can be fatal. Mosquitoes continually adapt to new treatments and millions of people are treated with ineffective medicines. Millions suffer unable to afford basic treatment. Treatment in one area will be useless in another.BUY, CARRY AND USE A NET AT NIGHT REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE LOCALS DO IF YOU ARE IN A MOSQUITO AREA IN INDIAFOR ASIA INFORMATION in ENGLISH FRENCH SPANISH ROYAL PERTH HOSPITALFOR MORE KEY LINKS RELATING TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND MALARIA: PERTH EXTERNAL LINKSFor additional information intended for...
