Fake products

by Rupanworld

before buying anything like bottled water, liquor, medicine etc. in India, one should ensure that they are not buying the fake stuff. Please see the spelling of the name closely if you already know the name, check the lid for any opening, expiry dates etc.

Foodstalls on roadside

by Rupanworld

I don't think I need to warn anybody about it but even then I would like to put this in black and white. Roadside foodstalls should be avoided as far as possible. They are mostly Ok for the Indian stomach and I can say so being a great fan of fast food with no history of any food infection ever, except once in Germany (funny, I know).

that's only for ladies

by Rupanworld

this is for the male travellers wishing to board local trains for cheaper commutation. Before getting into a compartment, please see if this is a ladies compartment, every train has one. You will be mocked and abused and even stand a chance of being thrown out.

If you are visiting India, there are not one but hundreds of warnings and dangers but that should not stop you from coming to this amazing country. Once you have been here, you are a more mature and enlightened traveller. Here's one warning. While walking on roads, please look below. Water

by PierreZA

Tap water is not safe in India. Don’t even use for brushing teeth. When buying bottled water, ensure that the cap is sealed, as it is said that some bottles for sale are refilled with normal tap water.Bottled water is not expensive and available everywhere

Water in India

by travellingtechie

The bottled water is perfectly safe here in India. Dont drink the tap water, thats it. Even that can be consumed if one has properly boiled and filtered it. I have never heard about the portable filtering system so cannot comment on that.ONe more thing......drink ample amount of water while you are here. This will keep the fluid levels high in your body and will maintain the temperature.Happy journey and welcome to India!

Pickpockets!

by musicollector

As with any country, pickpocketing does happen frequently. The best way to protect yourself is to wear a waste pouch UNDER a tunic or loosely hanging garment to keep your wallet, etc. Make sure the pouch is at the front, not your back. I have known people to be unaware of anything untoward until, later on, they discover that the bottom of their purse or bag has been skillfully sliced with surgical precision unawares! It can happen anywhere where you are jostled or packed in tight. It doesn't normally happen in situations where you are not part of a crowd. Also, carry traveler's cheques - never large amounts of money.

FIRE EARTHQUAKE FLOOD-- BE PREPARED

by vaticanus

Wherever you spend the night, it's a good idea to examine the escape routes in case of fire or smoke. This is particularly important for budget travellers who stay in cheaper lodgings.I've been in one fire and being prepared is one lesson I shall never forget. It's common for upper story windows to be blocked by grates which would prevent escape onto a nearby roof. It is routine for street level exit doors to be chained and locked at night. From your room, look for a way to get onto and off of the roof if you are forced upwards by smoke or blocked exits. From your room, count doorways or other construction features so you can navigate from your room to hallways, stairwells, and exits in case of thick smoke or darkness. At night, fill the bathroom buckets and have a towel nearby to soak to protect your face and lungs.Keep a flashlight and all of your important papers by your bedside, easy to...

Anti-Malarial Pills

by Pinoy_Traveller

The anti-malaria pill is usually recommended to be taken 1 tab a week before you travel, 1 tab a week after arrival in the destination and 1 tab a week after returning home and another one after one more week. so you only need to buy 4. Buying anti-malarial pills in india is much more affordable actually (well i dont know about where you are from) but in our country its a bit expensive. In India its about 30 to 40 rupees per tab.Actually, anti-malarial pills are recommended depending on your indian destination. so travelers should be able to read more....

Lone Female in India - The Dichotomy

by wrldtravler

Plenty of posts regarding this important topic. Firstly Indians are highly judgemental (i say this being one) so how you dress and how casual you are will guide how you're treated / viewed. Secondly Bombay has a good nightlife, but unlike everywhere else, nightclubs here, are not a place to meet people. Approaching women at bars and chatting them up is an unwritten law (and is perceived as being sleazy). Most Indians go to a club and party with the people they went there with and then head home. It isn't seen as a place to meet new people. This conflict of cultures has led to a number of rising rapes of foreign female tourists in India. If you do want to party I'd suggest going with someone, cause being alone is very often misinterpreted. Also try and keep some pepper spray handy, you never know. Hope this helps and didn't mean to upset anyone's sentiments just saying it like i see it.
