Walking

by mrotsmit

Forget about walking in Indian cities, even I, who loves to walk, had to admit this is not feasable. There's just too much traffic & hassle, sidewalks??? Are you kidding? Wait 'til you have to cross a street - the look on the locals faces when you celebrate making it to the other side alive is hilarious.

Befor going to India

by travel-writer

Here's our top fifteen tips for people thinking about backpacking in India. 1. Don't accept Rickshaw rides from bus stations - go round the corner 2. Never pay more than 50% of initial asking price for most goods and services (restaurants excepted) 3. When someone shakes your hand they're never just being friendly they're trying to take you to their carpet emporium whether you like it or not. 4. Never give money to beggars on the street unless you like to have 1000 people following you for the rest of the day. 5. If you go to hotels recommend by rickshaw drivers - you will be paying a large commission 6. Make sure you have candles or a torch in your hotel room - Power outages are frequent 7. Never believe anything they tell you about how luxurious the bus is - it's always an overbooked wreck driven by a lunatic 8. In fact - don't believe anything that anyone tells you about anything -...

Safety on the highways, or beware!

by mollynsteve

In November we took a group tour of Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle booked through Indus Travel of Canada, their local operator Hi tours. We criss-crossed much of Rajasthan during the tour. Highways between major cities are linked by 2-lane roads, often with potholes; sometimes the road is narrower. On the roads are anything you can imagine, including bicycles, rickshaws, ox carts, camel carts, elephants, wagons with 20 or more people pulled by slow-moving farm tractors, mopeds, cars, trucks, and busses. Vehicles are constantly passing even with oncoming traffic, which pulls partially onto the shoulders creating a center third lane for passing. Ouor bus added to the dangers: with AC failing several days and the alternator finally giving out, the driver TURNED THE HEADLIGHTS OFF late in the afternoon as we headed towards Jodhpur, even passing on the road without headlights after dusk!...

Pedestrians at Peril!

by mollynsteve

BE AWARE - PEDESTRIANS DO NOT HAVE RIGHT OF WAY! When you cross a street the cars do not slow down - they will speed up and cut you off. No wonder pedestrian fatalities lead the statistics in annual deaths on the streets of Delhi. This applies to other large cities as well.

changing money in India

by mollynsteve

you will find quite a few comments on India stating that ATMs, money changing, etc. is easy. Perhaps it can be. But there can be problems as well. On a trip to India in November 2007 we were with a group tour to Rajasthan booked through Indus Travels in Canada with their local offices Hi Tours. There were significant problems with the tour but that is not the topic here. One group member initially used a bank card for getting money from an ATM at the airport in Delhi. After that her card(Mastercard) was rejected every time she tried even though she had notified her bank that she would be using it in India. Other members of the group tried getting money from ATMs on 2 successive Sundays. No luck the first Sunday - it was a holiday and ATMs were not operating. The second Sunday all the ATMs they tried were out of money! We brought U.S. dollars and changed half at the Gandhi airport in New...

Mist

by uglyscot

In the colder weather mist forms soon after the sun sets and doesn't lift until as late as early afternoon in some places. When we arrived in Delhi, the captain warned us that there was mist, and until mid-day the view from our hotel window was restricted. At Agra the mist hid the Taj Mahal from our window until well into the afternoon. When we were at the airport about to fly home, we were delayed for almost an hour because earlier flights had been unable to leave because of the mist. So, in winter it might be advisable to do your sightseeing later rather than earlier in the day.

Monkeys

by uglyscot

Monkeys are becoming a menace in many parts of India. In towns like Delhi they are attracted to mobile phones, camers, lighters, wallets and other things people leave lying around. In rural districts they have learned that cars are often a source of food since passengers often throw fruit and other titbits out of the windows to them. One taxi driver told me his hotel in Agra had an old male monkey living in the grounds. he was tolerated because he protected his territory by chasing other monkeys away. So, beware, what seems like friendly cuddly creature could cause you harm or the loss of a possession.

Taxis and shop keepers

by ssbediz

Some of the TAXI drivers and shop keepers can wear you down after a while as they totally skank u wen they know u r a tourist! Do not travel long distances by Taxis as the tariff can go very high and even they are not safe.Travel by air or Train.

Don’t panic when you are surrounded with stares!

by michaelxxx

When we were in the train station of Calcutta, and Varanasi, people were really keeping their eyes on us. It kind of intimidated us especially my mom. I notice that some were even studying us and our movements. Okay that’s kind of creepy. So what’s the solution? When you feel insecure and intimidated with people staring at you, (happens to tourist) simply walk casually to another area or spot with less people. (don’t walk fast like you are running away this will attract attention) But soon the people in that area will stare at you, so again walk back to another area or back to the one you started in. Unless there is a store in the place you are waiting in, simply retreat their. This are the things we did when the stares came and it really work!
