Watch every step you make in India’s alleys!

by michaelxxx

Remember travelers, don’t follow what I did in being very fast and clumsy with my steps around the alleys! I was nearly and inches away from POOP hitting me directly in my head! My brother did not also watch his step, so when he finally came out from the dark alleys (This happens when you arrived late at night in Varanasi) he found tons of cow poop stuck to the sole of his shoes! To prevent this from happening to you, simply watch your steps and don’t walk blindly! Avoid coming back to your hotel late at night if its situated in the heart of the alleys of Varanasi! Well for the positive side, if this happens to you, at least you have stories to tell your friends and families about you little adventure with POOP!

Watch out the for Crooks

by michaelparham

At 6 pm as the snow was just starting to fall at the base of the moutain about an hour from Gulmarg two locals jumped ontop of our minivan as we were taking off from our little rest area. The guys said they were there to help us with our bags. Hey pretty nice for the hotel to send someone down to help us out with our bags. So these two guys ride on top of our minivan up the windy curves of the Kasmiri mountain road. Once we arrive they eagerly help out and get all the gear to the hotel without stepping actually inside the hotel.Really nice. Here's a tip. They were really happy and when we woke up the next morning they were waiting outside of the hotel for us. It took us a couple of days to figure out that they had been hitting up the girls for cash "to eat" to "get back home that evening" to "buy something to keep them warm" etc... Now these guys had been helping out the girls with their...

Crazy traffic

by AcornMan

The traffic in India is like nothing I've ever seen. Roads that look narrow even for a single lane of traffic actually handle traffic moving in two directions. Motorcycles zip around and are often pushed to the side of the road by larger vehicles. You'll see everything from bicycles to huge trucks using the roads. The auto-rickshaws, which are a huge presence in the cities and villages, are even seen on major highways. And the only traffic "rule" I ever witnessed being observed was honking before passing another vehicle. When you add it all up, it's a terribly dangerous environment for pedestrians, especially considering that decent sidewalks are rare. Most of the time pedestrians just share the roads with vehicles. I'm really quite amazed we never saw anyone get hit, though we did see a couple motorcycle accidents during our two-week visit. So be careful, and definitely don't drive...

Monkey Business in Varanasi

by NedHopkins

A bold monkey:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19806344/A few years back I was sitting just outside the front door of Ariau Jungle Towers in the Amazon. A monkey was nearby. I put my Pentel in my lap in order to open an envelope. The monkey rushed over, grabbed my pen, and immediately threw it into the river.Whether or not there is a monkey god, there are surely monkey thieves in many lands.

Avoiding travellers' diarrhoea

Water: Do NOT drink tap water. Use bottled or canned water & beverages. Brushing teeth and rinsing mouth should also be done with bottled water. Ice: Freezing water does NOT kill all bacteria. Do NOT put ice in water or beverages. Alcohol: Alcohol does NOT kill all bacteria. No ICE!Tea and Coffee: Bring water to a full boil for five minutes and use immediately. Dairy Products: If they are NOT pasteurized, they are generally UNSAFE.Salads: Raw food washed in tap water should be considered UNSAFE. This includeslettue, tomatoes and other vegetables. Sauces & Dressings: Best to avoid since ingredients and length of time time of preparationare often not known. Fresh Fruits: Peelable fruits (with skin) are safest when completely peeled by yourself. Indian Outhouse Story

by budapest8

! A few days later,I had moved to another house as mine was booked in advance. The new place had an inside toilet.I was dying tosit and relax without outside interference. But noticed it was not a flushing toilet, just ahole above a shute below with sunlight shining in.Boms away and the 'recycler' runs in from outside, grabs the business and scuttles out backwards grunting. So with some precision timing I drop my next payloadon the beasts head. I then hear an aweful scurryingoutside and squeeling of the poor piggy getting mobed.AAH! I learnd from some long time resident old timerhippies that during the season from November toFebuary, the pigs eat so much hippy SH%t that fromthe amount of drugs in them, they get dependant andhooked on the SH%T. So any poor traveller in the month ofMarch or April taking a dump might get attacked from behind, strung out pigs getting frantic...I didn't needless...

Indian Outhouse Story

by budapest8

I CUT 'N PASTED THIS FROM THE VT FORUMwrote it myself last weekGetting vey *** here in the Forum withpeeing and pooing. Well I rememberon my RTW trip in '86-'87 while in Goa,India my visit to the 'outhouse'.I was staying in a house just offthe beach and renting a room. Old portugesestyle building with Catholic ornaments inthe rooms with old dark wood furnitureand large crucifixs on the walls.A photo of all the family in B/W standinground a dead relative laid out in a coffin, all dressed in black and wearing sunglasses.Well the story gets wierd when I need to take a dumpround dusk. I inquire where is the toilet, andthey tell me out in the garden with a sort of semi junglebehind. I see a bamboo come palm leaves simpleplace for squatting in. Just concrete ground, no holeand a small opening on the ground at the rear.Well with bowel movement set in motion,I don't like to hold back the natural...

Women travling at Night

by ChartIt

Women should not travel in India after dark alone. There should be at least a group of 4 people for safety.Dont get in some rickshaw in order to find an alcholic substance, particuarlly at night. They might rob you and leave you stranded.

Females Should Wear Native Dress

by ChristyE

Females should be very careful on how they dress. While wearing modest American dress, my girlfriend and I were not waited upon at our international hotel. Our husbands were not with us, so the hotel staff ignored us. While wearing the customary native Indian dress, we were treated with respect. I would highly recommend researching cultural dress before traveling. While I was in the market walking ahead of my husband, I also was practically accosted by men if I smiled at them innocently as I would anyone in my local grocery store. Women should be careful and know their place while in India. You are not in Kansas anymore, Toto!

Risky Regions and political demonstrations

by JohnniOmani

Many areas of India especially in the northern areas near Pakistan and China pose major problems to travellers. Many travellers in the Himachal Pradesh (Kullu region) have been victims of crime, murder and some have just vanished. I strongly advise you to trek in a group and know the sitution before you set off on your trek. Insurgents are constantly fighting the government in Assam, Northern Tripura, Nagaland and Manipur. I ve ran into some potentially deadly demonstrations while on trains in Central India and on my way to Mumbai but luckily nothing happened in the end and to be honest, I actually had some close calls while in India. I booked a train from West Bengal to Calcutta but the officials overbooked my sleeper class birth and I was left with having to get a 22 hour bus ride from Siliguri to Calcutta. After I arrived in Calcutta I got the morning newspaper and saw that the train...
