If you like trendy upscale restaurants than Seminyak is the place to be.There are so many such restaurants here.Choosing where to eat at night is a real pleasure.
They are quite pricey, but the food is pretty good and these places caters to the more affluent tourists or the expats.
Ultimo lies between the more famous trattoria italian restaurants in Seminyak. In a row of italian restaurants Ultimo stands out because of it's decor.Very modern and stylish and looks really upscale and posh. It's sister restaurant is the Toscano in Jakarta Kemang area.
The bar area looks real nice and lively, but you can also choose to eat in the garden area.Thats just what we did.Thats where we sat...very romantic and relaxed setting.
It tries to be an authentic italian restaurant. So multiple courses...antipasti, primi, secondi etc and dolce. Only thing is...the portions compared with an real italian ristorante is quite generous and during our dinner after 2 courses i started to wonder how I could finish the rest..
Items on the menu range from salads and pizza's to prime steaks(Wagyu, Angus etc).Pricewise is high to very high.
Service was MORE than excellent.A very personal service and no request is to much. Basically I could pretty much decide how fast the food was going to be served.
Even after all of the above what truly sets Ultimo apart is that right now I am counting this place as one of the BEST budget deals available anywhere. The reason is there outstanding setmenu/prix fix menu. While i was reading the menu I noticed that they also had set menus.4 courses for either 55000 IDR or 75000IDR per person.
U get a salad, Pasta dish, Meat Dish and lastly dessert.
That's like 5/8 US$!!! No doubt this has become my number 1 budget deal for foodies.Biggest bang for the buck and a must visit for any bali visitors.
Favorite Dish: This is such an incredible deal. The setmenu could be ordered seperately from the regular menu. Just to put into perspective..the meat dish is more expensive than the whole setmenu.
What I really appreciate is that this place tries to emulate a real italian ristorante. Not only in the way the menu is set up and food is served, but also the way it's prepared.
55K IDR menu gives you no choices, but it's still good. The meat dish is sliced tournedos in aporcini sauce. Real tasty and tender.
Pasta was served in matricana sauce. Salad was just a green salad and teh dessert was a home made sorbet.
75K menu gives you more flexibilty. You get to chooe between a steak(tenderloin) or a fishdish. You get a cheicken salad, choice of 2 pastas and ice cream as dessert.

Not only Bali offers a unique experience in terms of food, they offer some varieties of drinks too. Do try Balinese coffee and if you like it, you can pick them up from Matahari (their local supermarket). Their cocoa is not bad, but some places dilute them too much. Their Bintang Beer is pretty impressive! Comparable to international label, it sure does wonders during a hot sunny day. Arak is a Malay name of liquor, you can have them plain or many places mixed them up like cocktail. My personal favourite must be their Rice Wine Liquor, especially the one from Bumbu Bali. A bit sweetish, it is smooth and goes really well with my traditional balinese meal.

We came to know of this Japanese restaurant in Seminyak area while strolling about. The place looked impressive but their 10 course tasting menu were affordable (Rp120,00) per person excluding drinks. Headed by a japanese chef, the raw seafood were excellent! But apart from typical japanese dishes, they had incorporated in some fusion as well. One of the memorable dish were their Shu Mai. It was soooo wonderfully juice!
The place ... well, gorgeous setting. See the pics.

I'm not sure if you can have this everywhere, I only spotted this fresh seaweed in Made Warung. Really fresh and good choice after several days of heavy meal, I heard their seaweed's heavily exported to Japan, the seaweed loving nation. Try it.

Restaurant itself were beauitfully set-up. Beware of the mosquitoes though but the staff were attentive enough to lid up the coil as soon as you feel uncomfortable. Yeah, good service there. The food itself were worth visiting, not the mention .. it is not expensive for the quantity and quality they provide. We ordered their RIJSTTAFEL SET (Rp225,000) which came with 4 appetisers, 1 soup, 3 rice, 7 main dishes, fruit platter and dessert. Honestly, portion is way to huge for 1 person so I shared them with my friend. Only thing is, they had this funny policy of charging you extra if you decide to share. However, you can order something else to forfeit the charges.
Other than that, its a cooking school too, and heard its pretty famous.
I came home happy as I get to try truely authentic balinese food, minus the tummy upset so famed by eating at the local roadside.
BTW, MUST BOOK. It was pack even on week nights.
Favorite Dish: Everything! From the appetiser, to main, to dessert to their homemade liquor .. everthing was memorable and delectable.

Before I went on my Bali trip, I have been reminded over and over again to visit Ibu Oka for Bali's specialty. Babi Guling. This definately is the highlight dish of my whole visit. Not only its tasty and delicious, it is affortably priced at Rp15,000 only. When I was there (June 2007), the shop itself was close but I was fortunate to have Wayan (driver) with me. They are currently operating from Ibu Oka's personal home itself and its lovely. A typical balinese home with several separate houses, in a hugeeee compound. Do visit the kitchen/roasting area behind if you are curious like me. Quite an experience.
Favorite Dish: Babi Guling Special and Keropok Babi (Pork Skin Cracker)

This partially open air restaurant is right in the middle of the nighttime hot spot of Kuta beach. Just down from Paddy's Bar, it is ideally located as a good starter point for your night.
In front the tables face onto the street for great people watching. Further in the back are comfy couches for a relaxing drink.
The food is a mix of Thai and Indonesian, but there are also items like fried calamari and carpaccio on the menu.
There is a set lunch and a set dinner before 7PM for 69,000 with 3 courses, a Bintang and coffee. The dinner is available after 7, just without the drinks.
The staff were very friendly and eager to please. The manager came around to make sure we were happy with everything and took our picture to put on the web site.
Favorite Dish: We had fried calamari to start. It was so tender, really good. It was an odd shade of green batter, but very tasty. Next was chili coconut chicken on spinach, also very good.
I had the set dinner with a Thai chicken coconut soup, red Thai curry and Indonesian dumpling in coconut cream sauce for dessert. All was fabulous! I highly recommend eating here, everything was delicious!
They also have a very reasonable drink selection using local liquors. Cocktails were 25,000, a glass of wine was 45,000 and beer about 20,000.

Found a quaint cafe in Poppies Lane 1 called Nusa Indah. The food is good and the pricing is the cheapest in Bali. They offer traditional Indonesian food, western and eastern. I dined there for 3 days throughout my 6 day stay, always trying something new. And everything I ordered was good.
Beers are one of the cheapest here too. The cafe is almost always crowded, but due to the efficient service, things get going.
It's not air-conditioned so it could get rather hot during the day. But at night it's nice cos Bali is cold during the night. It has a bar-top table across the entrance where drinkers will usually prop themselves on.
Favorite Dish: Most were tasty. Try anything on the menu. I'm sure you won't regret it.

Bumbu Bali is owned by Heinz von Holzen, a former executive chef who moved and settled in Bali. We decided to try this place because of the recommendation from one of the guidebooks I read and the place didn't disappoint.
The dishes were flavorful and fresh. Service was very prompt.
Great extra was the cultural/dance show that starts at 8pm.
Favorite Dish: Try the sate.

PADANG FOOD is a wellknown Indonesian cuisine, it was a special food from West Sumatra, they prepare already cooked food, so the costumer not neceesary to waiting in long long time. One can get easily the restaurant in almost all over island of Indonesia, as well as in Bali, So if you just landed at Ngurah Rai Air Port, you can go to this Padang Restaurant just in front of White statue of Ramayana near Ngurah rai Air Port. They prepare so much plates on the table, but they only count what food you eat, in example if there are two piesces of fried chickens in one plates, then if you only take one piece, the restaurant only count the one you eat, as well as for other plates
Favorite Dish: They serve special West sumatra Cook, one thing you should know that, almost of their food ar a hot food, so if tou don't like the hot one, ask the restaurant boy to show you not the hot one. You can try a red card head soup, it was popular padang food, the other is cassava leaf, cuttle fish, beef meat in a a chocolate color of saucage called Rendang, chicken soup, fried shrimp, fresh water fish, sea fish, beef soup, etc. Enjoy eat.... Yummy
