Tying thread for dying and weaving, Sideman
3 more images

The Sideman area is home to a number of quality weaving centres - some still using very traditional methods of dying, drying and weaving cloth. Visitors are welcome to view the process. Ask for directions in Sideman village or at your accommodation.

Boy holding a 'lontar' for sale, Tenganan village
4 more images

Tenganan is a small, walled village ccupied by the descendants of the original Balinese. Many traditional arts and crafts are practised in the village - including the making of 'lontar' strips, which are dried palm leaves with hand drawn stories or calendars, hand painted eggs and hand-weaving of ikat and double ikat cloth. There are also some magnificent oil paintings, many depicting a scene from the Ramadayan. There is a small donation to enter the village and a 'guide' will happily show you around and then take you to his house where he has goods to sell - there is no 'hard' sell, but I would be surprised if you went there and didn't buy something, the 'lontar' sell in Ubud for around three times the price of buying directly from the village. The village house are made of stone and there is a large meeting area in the centre of the village. There are in fact two Tenganan villages - most tourists go straignt up the road from Candidasa to Tenganan East, but Tenganan West about 2 km away is also worth a look. Well worth a visit to see something quite different to other parts of Bali. It is easy to reach Tenganan by ojek from Candidasa - uphill to get there, but a beautifl walk back.
