Gunung Batur - topped with a curtain of cloud
    2 more images

Magnificent Gunung (Mount) Batur which is an active volcano, crater lake and Danau Batur in Kintamani - see them at the same spot. Normally the tour van will stop you at a high spot in Kintamani where there are railings . Bending over slightly on the railings, look below and forward, you will see Gunung Batur, the lake and the Danau. On a clear day, I warrant that the scene will be more beautiful than the pictures that I have taken as that day was a gloomy day, accompanied by the heavy downpour after a few minutes.
Pictures attached: Gunung Batur, crater lake and the valley - total 3 pics.

From Tirta Empul temple, overlooking the temple on a hill above is a suprisingly modern building: the Government Palace, built in 1954. Originally a residence for Dutch officials, it was later used by former President Soekarno during his frequent trips to Bali.

Lake Batur is a volcanic Crater lake formed from the eruptions of Gunung (Mount Batur) Batur eons ago. Lake batur is the largest lake of Bali as about 18 kilometers long and about 2 kilometers on it's widest point and is located below the vista points of the Mount Batur area via a zig zagging two lane road. The famous Temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is located on it's shores (but most whole day tours don't add a stop here). the lake is a major center for fishing and recreational activities in Bali and also has many villas besides the regular lakeside villages.

the present incarnation of Mount Batur (gunung batur) is just a small volcano but as you can around the many viewing decks around the main road in Kintamani at the southern end of the huge crater rim, the old crater rim of the volcano is huge and and can be classified as an old mega volcano and youi can take pictures of the crater rim the surrounds Lake Batur and Mount Batur if you have a really powerful optical zoom camera like us.

although the present crater of Gunung Batur (mount batur) is a small one, the ancient crater rim of which includes Batur Lake is also situated was a massive one as this volcano was a huge one eons ago but the present volcano is still an active one and the last eruption was in 1917. the volcano is a postcard perfect backdrop and the road around the crater rim facing the volcano is loaded with lots of restaurants with viewing decks. there are also some organized hikes to the top from the base and hikes usually take about 2 to 2 1/2 hours (not inlcuded in the full day package).

remember that Mount Batur is stil classified as an active volcano and the last eruption was in 1917 and although that was almost 100 years ago, there are still steam vents along the crater that spews steam and some lava flows so that you need experience guides in going to hike along the volcano.

this will be my pictures of the crater of Mount Batur using powerful optical zoom cameras, both with clouds and without.
