The ceilings of Hall of Justice and the Floating Pavilion are each decorated with very interesting paintings done in the Kamasan style. Kamasan is the name of a small village a little southeast of Semarapura. It was in Kamasan where this very early and distinctive style of painting, which was adopted by the royal court, originated. These ceiling painting have all been restored or replaced over time, but they remain faithful to the 18th century originals. Normally there are very good guides converse in several languages to help explain the meaning and significance of these ceiling paintings.
The paintings on the ceiling of the Kertha Gosa depict several different themes and they are laid out and organized by panels. Much of the ceiling is devoted to the life of Bima, and of particular note are his visits to the after-life where he witnessed the gruesome torture and torments of evil persons...a sort of hell if you will, and the consequence of evil-going, thus very appropriate for the Hall of Justice. Other panels show Garuda’s quest for the elixir of life, a Balinese calendar, etc.

Of greatest note and interest is the Taman Kertha Gosa complex which is the restored palace grounds first erected in 1710. The two most important buildings in this complex, and very worthy of spending some time enjoying, are the Kertha Gosa, or the Hall of Justice and the Bale Kambang also known as the Floating Pavilion. There is also an interesting museum called the Museum Semarajaya which has undergone a number of improvements in recent years.
Tip: Go early or late in the day as it gets hot from just before noon to mid afternoon.

The Hall of Justice is located within the grounds of Semara Pura. This was the supreme court of the Klungkung kingdom. It is an open sided pavilion with the ceiling completely covered inside with paintings. They were originally done on cloth, but had to be replaced as the cloth had deteriorated.

Most of the original palace and grounds were destroyed by Dutch attacks in 1908. It has been laid out in a square, with courtyards, gardens, pavilions and moats. We were there quite early in the morning, before any other tourists arrived and found it to be a lovely peaceful place.

Across the street from the Taman Gili is a small museum called Museum Daerah Semarapura.
There you can see a collection of bronze and marble sculptures and painting by an Italian artist. There is also photos of the royal family and the palace from the aerly 1900's.

The ceilings of both buildings are painted with scenes from Balinese myths
The paintings have undergone restoration and repainting several times in the last hundred years, but remain fine examples of the wayang style, in which the figures resemble shadow puppets.

Built in the arly 18th century, Taman Gili (Moated Garden) is what remains of the royal palace, most of which was destroyed in 1908 during the Dutch conquest

In the center of the downtown square there is a large monument that marks an event that took place in 1908, when 200 members of the Klungkung royal court commited ritual suicide.
The monument is the Puputan Monument.
It is across from the Taman Gili.
