    Surfing Lessons in Kuta Beach

by machomikemd Written Jan 6, 2014

Kuta Beach is more appropiate for surfing rather than swimming as the waves in kuta beach are large and with riptides present. it was discovered by backpackers in the 1970's primarily as a surfing area too although you could swim in kuta beach, be careful of the stong currents and big waves.

being a surfer's beach, there are lots of local established surfing stalls and local surfer dudes with enterpreneurial spirits willing to teach Surfing 101 to willing tourists like us. the average price of a 30 minute surfing lesson if via an establish surfing stall in kuta is about 400,000 to 500,000 rupiah for the 30 minute lesson but it can get low as 250,000 rupiah for the enterprising local surfer dudes along the beach.

Equipment: whether getting the surfing lesson via the surfing stalls or via the informal surfer dudes, they both provide the surf and guide you along the beach for the surfing lesson.

beside surfing, swimming if something nice to be done in kuta. just choose by your own, freshwater or saltwater. option number 2, for sure just go to the beaches along kuta-legian-seminyak and option number 1 will have some choices. in your own hostels [if they have, since not all of the accommodation in poppies lane have this facility!] or going to waterboom park nearby legian. but the nice thing, you can do sunbathing in the beach and hotels-hostels' swimming pool :)

    Equipment: swimsuit and sunblock

awaiting sunset in kuta (c) ukirsari

refer to its name as surfers paradise, one of the highlights in kuta is surfing. and the condition is ideal; kuta has left and right breaks. just rent the board along poppies lane or use your own. many surfers rent motorcycle or car for this purpose >> to bring the surf board from the hostels to the beach and the opposite. beside kuta, this activity can be done in canggu, few kilometres from kuta.

Equipment: surf board, dailypack, motorcycle or car

    Surfboard Rental Along Kuta Beach

Kuta as you may know is the most popular of the Bali beaches and is famous for it's surfing and nightlife. We did rent a surf board and were taught how to surf for an hour which cost 50,000 rupiah (5 dollars). There are hundreds of surf boards for rent on the beach and pretty much any other watersport is available here.

We went for the biggest surf board so we looked pretty stupid. The bigger the board the easier to use, and we still sucked.

Equipment: You'll get the board and a wet top thing..... i don't know much about surfing.

    ready.... here comes!

Kuta has many challenging breaks for surfers. Even on a hot, hot noon, you will see lots of surfers at Kuta Beach. Lots of surfboards are for rental at the beach. If you wish, you can get your own in the shops in Jalan Legian.

Equipment: You do not need to bring your surfboards or surf gears. You can rent/hire them at the beach or from the nearby shops. There are also many shops selling surf gear and boards at Jalan Legian.

    Dodge the Street Touts!

Pretend to speak a DIFFERENT LANGUAGE! That will confuse 'em. This was our FAVORITE sport. Either out walking them and/or confusing them by speaking pretend Tongan!

Equipment: Fast Walking shoes and a Way Ahead Gazing look. Keep them at bay by walking fast and not paying attention to the touts... as if you don't even understand what they are saying!
