The times are changing

by balisunshine

Today Balinese men can no longer marry more than one wife or desert a woman that he does not love anymore. Divorce, which was formally unknown of in the past, is a fact of life today. It is shameful now for a Balinese man to have more than one wife although it used to be a symbol of social status and pride. On the other hand Balinese women will refuse to have their husband have another wife, or to marry a married man. They are now equal with men. They are chasing after careers now, defending their rights, and demanding justice. They have become global. There are many Balinese women who are successful business women, although their school education background is not high. Many of them are intellectuals, such as engineers, doctors, and even speakers in various important intellectual forums. Balinese women are no longer just a partner but they are now the decision makers themselves.

Balinese Unity

by balisunshine

Group membership is an essential element in every aspect of Balinese life. Individualists are uncommon, individualism is not encouraged. The Balinese sense of social responsibility is best stated in their principle of Tat Twam Asi, which loosely translates as “I am you, and you are me”. Balinese families are patrilineal and membership is not merely confined to the living, but includes the unseen spirits of ancestors. Families have obligations to many unseen forces. Those that forget their duties to the ancestor spirits are likely to be sent suffering in the form of illness or a disrupted household. Families that observe their duties can expect prosperity and abundance.

Who was Garuda Wisnu

by balisunshine

Wisnu is the Protector God of Hinduism who rode on mythical bird named Garuda. This legend is inspired from Adi Parwa's tale There is the episode of Garuda in his loyaltyand sacrifice to save his mother from the shackles of slavery life, by devoting his life to serve the God Wisnu by serving as a means of transportation. The tale tells about a whirlpool in a sea of milk created by gods and giants using Mount Mandara. The whirlpool caused a horse called Oncesrawa to appear, and then the Tirtha Amertha (the water of life). Anybody who drinks the Tirtha Amertha, will never die because they will be drinking from a fountain of youth. The gods and giants then fought to get the water, but finally the gods prevailed and took the water to be kept in heaven.Based on the tale, the Garuda eagle, the son of Goddess Winata, fought hard to get the Tirtha Amertha to free his mother from 1,000 dragons,...

Do the Balinese swim?

by balisunshine

As for the Balinese, they regard the dangerous and unpredictable Indian Ocean waters as the home of demons who can snatch life in an instant. This can be considered to be confirmedthrough the local newspapers, about the casual swept away by the currents. As for the Balinese,to enter the water for no other reason than enjoyment required both courage and folly. The Balinese think that surfing is for kids, not for married men with families to support and responsibilities in the community.

First Names

by balisunshine

Unlike in modern Western countries, Balinese would never dare to call their parents by their first name. It is also considered impolite to call anyone older than yourself by one’s first name only.
