Nasi Selo

by Rinjani

Nasi (rice) Selo even for Balinese is rare to find. We found it incidentally on the way from Ubud to Kintamani. It is sold at small warung. What is special about Nasi Selo is the dishes was main staple and considerably luxury for Balinese during Dutch colonialism (1945). The old version of Nasi Selo was only rice mixed with slices of yam or cassava, with vegetable and shredded coconut. But the new version of Nasi Selo is you get vegetables and slice of fish or mince pork. You can add with other things as you like such as chicken, eggs, etc. I tried it. Nasi Selo and Balinese coffee…it’s quite ok. What I didn’t really enjoy was so many flies in the shops tried to get share on Nasi Selo.

Kajeng Hall of Fame

by Rinjani

Enter Kajeng street, you will find name, signature or words engraved in a pathway. There was married couple announced their marriage date, or person who stayed in one of homestays in Kajeng street. Sampek, one of the native Ubudnese told me it was engraved for fundraising. But it looks nice. And I keep reading people’s memorabilia on my way back to my home stay. It’s a Kajeng version of hall of fame.

In one part of the temple, you will see men and women shower under water sprouts. Although water looks tempting, but swimming is highly restricted and also the using of any detergent is forbidden.

Funeral Ceremony : Ngaben III

by Rinjani

After arriving at the procession location, the men who carried the Wadah made a three time circle before locating the Wadah on the ground. Then, people performed ceremony. Only close family who can approach wadah. Before, people performed the burn ritual using wood, but now thanks to technology, people use machine that pumping the wind to fire. Before they started, they took out some decoration that used in wadah. Someone has tried to explain the whole process including symbol and sign. But it was too complicated to digest whole information in one time. It takes around two hours since the burning started until it’s cooling. Then the priest will proceed with other ceremony, then there will be ceremony to flow the ashes to the river or sea. Then there will be another ceremony after three days, then after twelve day, etc, etc. There were many people attending the funeral. They all come from...
