Funeral Ceremony : Ngaben II

by Rinjani

The funeral processions started few minutes after 12 midday. Balinese have their own timing in their tradition. There is almost never happen that funeral starts before midday. The deceased was the lady who passed away in her 102 years old. She had big family. She passed away two days before the funeral. And the family apply sort of like cream to preserve the body before the priest decide good day to conduct ceremony. When I was there, people were all dressed up in Kebaya. The men were usually in dark shirt and Balinese sarong. For funeral, they told me that it is inappropriate to have light color waistband. Dark and other dark colors are acceptable. Few minutes after 12 pm, the people started. The body was moved from ‘bale’ to ‘Wadah’ ( they call the decorated ‘tower’ it a transportation to different life). People told me that ‘Wadah’ could be carried by four men. But they held ceremony...

Funeral Ceremony : Ngaben I

by Rinjani

I considered as a luckiest person when Tut asked me whether I am interested to attend funeral ceremony of his relatives in his village. I definitely go for it!! I asked him whet the proper clothes to attend ceremony? He said it’s I can wear my shirt, with sarong and waistband, as long as I choose dark color. But I would like to do better. I got Kebaya, I wanted to properly dressed as Balinese. The woman seller was disagree with me that I should go for dark color (she tried to sell a pink Kebaya to me).Tut’s village is around 30 minute from Ubud. I couldn’t hide my excitement. I love the idea that this funeral is tourist-free. I hope I could have an original scene of daily custom. Tut said that I didn’t have to bother to keep my sad face. In Bali tradition, funeral is not something that people could mourn. You will be asked to stay at home if you can’t hold back your tears.People kept...

Corner of West Bali

by Rinjani

They call the area as “Dodol Watu”. You need to go from West Bali National Park, it takes nearly one hour to reach this place from National Park office. Java island is very near from this area. You can imagine your self swimming and voila, you are in Java. You don’t need ferry to transport you from Bali to Java. The low down is the current is strong, so swimming inter island is not so recommended. This place is beautiful. The beach is absolutely gorgeous. You can see the deers take rest under shadow while you are relaxing on the beach. I love this place.

Tenganan

by Rinjani

Another interesting traditional Balinese village is Tenganan. The village is situated in eastern part of Bali. Most of the houses here were built from the earth mud. You can see some of the walls are damaged here and there. People here are selling craft such as woven textiles, egg painting, bamboo woven, etc. But, the most interesting part is to see the artist that painting in Lontar leaves, an ancient Balinese way of writing. You can buy Balinese calendar in Lontar leaves.

Panglipuran

by Rinjani

Panglipuran is a Balinese traditional village. They call it “Bali Aga”. The unique from Panglipuran is the village is very tidy and organized. The people here have same gate. In the gate, there is small plague contains information on how many men and women living in the village. The houses are beautiful. The way they build the wall is interesting. Now the traditional way of building wall a la Panglipuran has been adopted in many restaurants and gallery. But it is more exotic to see them in their ‘homeland’. The Panglipurans also known to make decorated bamboo basket. Kentongan is a neighbourhood-scale signalling device. It is made of wood. The villagers know the signal based on the sound. For example twice knocks means there is fire (just example fellow, not a literally meaning :)

Trunyan

by Rinjani

Well fellow, this is my wish list that I could not afford. Trunyan is a village in Batur lake area. The traditional village has its extraordinary custom by laying a body under a special kind of tree which released a kind of aroma. They call the tree as “Menyan” tree. They believe that the root of the trees absorb the smell of decaying process. If you were lucky you can find the three days old bodies laying under the trees. To reach this village, you need to rent a boat and go to the village, then rent another boat to reach the ‘cemetery’. It takes 40 minute from the boat renting to reach Trunyan. The problem with Trunyan, many people didn’t recommend me to go there. They said that there are many cases that after you negotiated certain price and you jumped to the boat, in the middle of the lake, the boatman stopped the boat and asked you for more money. Even if you are agree, you are not...

Trekking to Batur Mountain II

by Rinjani

Exploring the other part of Batur mountain is also nice experience. My guide, Putut, took me to the craters(I borrowed his term). In crater I, he explained the smoke in 2004 came from this crater. You can see also many yellow scarfs in the crater and also offering. Balinese also do ritual here. Crater II is the biggest, where you can see the wide plain area after erruption in 1926. Putut showed me how to boiled eggs naturally. He put four eggs in a hole. It was warm. And after 15 minute, the eggs were ready. While enjoying a better taste of boiled egg (three reason for this: the eggs taste nicer and you need to do more effort by climbing mountain, bring eggs and ensure they are still in a form of egg), a big group of monkeys came to us. As good visitor we gave the rest of eggs to the monkey gank, and sadly seeing them fighting for eggs. Anyway, we may need to bring more eggs next...

Trekking to Batur Mountain I

by Rinjani

Trekking to Batur Mountain is very nice. The trek is not so difficult to reach and the path is comfortable for climbing. Trekking is recommended starts around 4 am in the morning. It takes 2 to 3 hours to reach the top and catching up with spectacular sunrise. I missed the spectacular sunrise, since there was fire in Abang mountain, and the smoke covered the sun. Some tours organzed the trip. It is usually based on two people, a little bit difficult for the single traveller like me visiting Bali in low season. I asked hotel to organize the trip (hotels are usually offer the tour). I was almost cancelled the trip because none else go. Luckily, one of the hotel staffs has uncle who works as a guide. Putut, his name is also a really good guide. He picked me up at 3.30 am, riding motorcycle to reach entrance point. I found out, there is a base that also serves as Batur Trekking Association....
