Like most Sanur restaurants it's not much to look at from the road. Most days we walked past there were people inside dining. An Aussie guy who visits Bali twice a year was staying at our apartments in Sanur & he recommended Star Cafe along with a couple of other places we had never tried. It was a great recommendation. Good service but not too much fuss. Plenty of fans to keep the heat down. Both times we dined there was for lunch so I can't say how busy they are in the evening but I imagine they would be popular.
Favorite Dish:
We ate twice at Star Cafe & once at their sister restaurant Bistro 95 . All the meals we ate were great. Meals included:
Chicken Pie 65,000rp ($7.75) Roast chicken Half a chook 59,000rp ($7), Fish N chips 59,000rp
Spring rolls to start 22,000rp ($2.60) Lge Bintang 25,000rp ($3), Iced Bali Coffee (black) 16,000rp
($1.90).
Seafood Platter 95,000rp ($11.30), Spag Bol , 49,000rp ($5.85) soft drinks were 12,000rp ($1.45)
Street Cafe is set back off the road with a lovely raised patio area at the front. Through the large glass doors you walk into a very different style of Sanur restaurant . Firstly there is a baby grand piano as you enter on your left. To the right are large lounge chairs with a long coffee table . There is free WIFI for all customers and there is no time restrictions. The table settings have large chunky bench style seating. Very heavy to pull too. The kitchen is an open kitchen inside the restaurant so you can see the chefs cooking . They also have a bar area for coffees or cocktails. There are large glass windows all around to let in the light. Their menu prices were also nett so no extra tax to add. They also have very clean toilets too.
We had discount vouchers for breakfast that came with our apartment accommodation. The restaurant is in front of & belongs to the Ajanta villas . We were staying in a sister property Scape apartments down the road.
Favorite Dish:
Normally the breakfasts were between 25,000 rp & 60,000 rp but we had the choice of any ; European, eggs, sausage, bacon, tomato, toast juice tea or coffee, Continental ciabata bread roll, croissant, slice ham , slice Edam cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurt , juice, tea or coffee. Plus you could Indonesian nasi or mie goreng too.
We went for dinner one night and ordered the fish and chips, mixed seafood, Ayam be-tutu ( Slow cooked Chicken With Balinese Spice Mixture) and the chicken was so tender. Ayam laplan - fried chicken which was quite a small piece of chicken but enough for my daughter. We had a milkshake, sprite, arak cocktail & large Bintang all up 341,000 rp ( $ 40.60 Aud). Very Yummy & cheap for $10 a head
2007:WE HAVE ALWAYS LOVED OUR MEALS AT RETRO'S. THE STAFF ARE ALWAYS ATTENTIVE THE SETTING IS NICE BOTH INSIDE, OUTSIDE AND AT THE BAR AREA. MUSIC IS GREAT. THEIR FOOD IS ALSO TERRIFIC AND SOMEHOW DIFFERENT FROM A LOT OF THE OTHER RESTAURANTS IN THIS PRICE RANGE. YOU USUALLY HAVE TO PAY A LOT MORE FOR THIS STYLE OF FOOD. THEIR BATHROOMS ARE ALSO VERY CLEAN.
2010 UPDATE; We didn't get to Retro's until the last few days of our trip. The restaurant never seemed to have any more than a few customers in it which always makes you think something must be wrong. We decided to give them a try one lunchtime as we had noticed they had extended the Happy Hour for Bintang from 12 noon till 8pm, maybe to attract more customers. Cannot believe we had left it so long to go to Retro's. The meal was fantastic so much so that we went there for dinner that night & the next night too.
Favorite Dish:
2007:FOR MY MEAL I HAD A SEAFOOD STACK. AT THE BASE WAS A YUMMY POTATO CAKE ,THEN LAYERED STEAMED VEGIES OF CARROT & BEANS, A PIECE OF GRILLED FISH TOPPED WITH A REALLY NICE CREAMY SAUCE. THE FINAL LAYER WAS A LARGE GRILLED PRAWN. BOTH THE KIDS HAD THEIR FISH & CHIPS. THE FISH WAS BONELESS & IN A NUGGET STYLE BUT IT WAS REAL FISH. MY HUBBY HAD THE FILLET MIGNON AND IT WAS TOP QUALITY. ADD 2 LARGE BEERS, AN ARAK MADU, A CHOC MILKSHAKE , LEMON JUICE AND TO FINISH THE LARGEST BOTTLE OF WATER ALL UP WITH TAX 251,000Rp ($35.56AUD) WE WOULD PAY THAT EACH IN OZ!!!!
2010: Spring rolls to start :Neil had the seafood kebabs, I had the grilled chicken & Bali sauces, Amy had chicken cordon blue. with 2 lge Bin-tangs, a Singapore sling & sprite all up 272,800rp ($32.47 AUD) you'd pay that for the drinks alone in OZ!!
for our other visits we had Fillet mignon, Saltimboca,Fish and chips , Spag Bol; 2 beers,2 cokes,a Mai tai, and a fruit punch 255,750rp ($30.45)
Our last meal in Sanur : Med seafood pizza to start, Fillet Mignon, fettuccine ala pesto, Large pizza Romano, spag carbonara. 422,950rp ($50.35Aud)
There is nothing better than to sit at tables set out on the sand in front of an ocean and they light candles ( and mozzi coils) for you as the sun goes down. Locals selling all manner of things from tshirts , sunglasses, art and massages are passing by in their last attempt of a sale before the day is done. Parents bring young children down to the water's edge for a splash and play in the retreating sea. The sailboat owners land their boats as the days trade has finished. You sip on a welcome drink and contemplate a delicious menu wondering what the family & friends at home will be eating for dinner that night. Yes that's what I like to do at a restaurant like The Bonsai Cafe.
JAN 2010 UPDATE; Didn't eat here this trip but there was always people at the tables as we walked past. They have free WIFI so lots of laptops on tables.
Favorite Dish:
I had the delightful seafood curry, hubby had the surf & turf, my son had fish n chips while my daughter had steak schnitzel. All very yummy . Total bill along with a small bintang, an arak , diet coke, lemon & an orange juice came to 301,950rp( $43.00AUD). Not bad for four meals and drinks plus a terrific setting.
UPDATE October 2009........................
I have just read on the internet that this cafe will be closing late in 2009. Hopefully the staff will find jobs elsewhere in Sanur as we loved their cooking. I will keep you posted..............................
SET ON THE WALKWAY ON SANUR BEACH THIS RESTAURANT SERVES A WIDE RANGE OF FOOD. YOU CAN STOP FOR JUST A COFFEE OR STAY FOR A SUBSTANTIAL MEAL. WHEN THE BREEZE IS IN IT IS THE PERFECT SPOT TO BE. THEY ALSO GIVE THAT LITTLE BIT EXTRA, COLD DRINK ON ARRIVAL AND A LOVELY COLD TOWEL TO REFRESH YOU BEFORE TAKING YOUR FOOD ORDER.
Favorite Dish:
WE HAD A VARIED SELECTION OF DISHES HERE. I HAD THE MOST DELIGHTFUL THAI GREEN CURRY YUMMIER THAN PHUKET THE YEAR BEFORE. HUBBY HAD GRILLED CHICKEN BREAST AND SALAD, SON HAD THE BIGGEST TUNA PATTIES THEY LOOKED SO GOOD I HAD TO TAKE A PHOTO OF THEM. WENT BACK AGAIN IN NOV 2007 AND THE FOOD IS STILL WONDERFUL AND THE SERVICE WAS GREAT TOO. LOVE THE TUNA PATTIES & GREEN CURRY STILL. THE ICED COFFEE & TEA WAS SO REFRESHING AFTER A HOT MORNING OF SHOPPING.
TIME AND TIME AGAIN WE RETURN TO BALI AND ABSOLUTELY EVERY TIME WE HAVE TO VISIT BENNO'S AND USUALLY THAT IS MORE THAN ONCE PER TRIP. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF REASON'S WE LOVE BENNO'S. THE CAFE IS SITUATED IN THE HEART OF SINDHU BEACH MARKETS AND I HAVE SAID BEFORE IT IS A GREAT PLACE TO REST AFTER A BIG SHOP. YOU CAN WATCH THE BEACH SELLER'S, MASSAGE GIRLS, HAIR BRAIDER'S AND NAIL ARTISTS AT WORK. YOU CAN LOOK OUT OVER THE OCEAN AND WATCH THE FISHING BOATS TAKE PEOPLE OUT FOR A SAIL. ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON LOADS OF BALINESE FAMILIES FROLICKED AT THE SHORE AS THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THEIR PARENTS HAVE TIME OFF FROM WORK. ANOTHER THING WE LIKE TO DO IS WATCH ALL THE TOURISTS GO BY TRYING TO GUESS WHERE THEY COME FROM.- NB JAN 2010 WE RETURNED AND WERE SADLY DISAPPOINTED . THE FANTASTIC BUBBLY NATURED STAFF HAVE ALL GONE. THE FOOD WAS JUST OK AND YOU DON'T MIND PAYING A LITTLE BIT EXTRA IF THE FOOD IS FANTASTIC SADLY THIS IS NO MORE .
Favorite Dish:
WE ATE AT BENNO'S OVER 4 TIMES IN OUR JAN 2007 TRIP. WE WERE NEVER DISAPPOINTED AND THE SERVICE WAS MUCH FASTER THAN A LOT OF OTHER PLACES WE VISITED. WE ALSO GOT TAKEAWAY ONE NIGHT. SOME OF THE DISHES WE ATE ( PRICES IN AUST $) STK DIANE $6.10, FISH & CHIPS $5.50, CHICKEN NUGGETS $3.50, CHICKEN ALA KING $6.70, BEEF RENDANG $5.50, SPRING ROLLS $2.60, SNAPPER $7.60, MIXED GRILLED KEBABS $6.40, BAMBOO COCKTAIL $5.90, ALL YUMMY
.
JAN 2010 UPDATE; WENT STRAIGHT TO BENNOS FOR OUR FIRST NIGHTS DINNER. SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR NEW YEARS DAY WE HAD HOPED .THE SEAFOOD PLATTER FOR TWO AT 175,000 RP ( $23aud WITH TAX) WHILE SEEMS LIKE GREAT VALUE WAS JUST OK. THE SERVING SIZE WAS BARELY ENOUGH FOR TWO AND NO COMPLIMENTARY PEANUTS WERE OFFERED EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE PLATES OF NUTS ON THE BAR. NO WELCOME DRINKS ANYMORE AND WE HAD MUCH BETTER SERVICE AND SEAFOOD LATER IN OUR TRIP. EVEN THE STANDARD CHICKEN SATE WAS JUST ORDINARY.
WE HAD TWO WONDERFUL MEALS AT JEPUN ON OUR TRIP IN NOVEMBER 2007. IT'S THE LITTLE EXTRAS LIKE THE COMPLIMENTARY GARLIC BREAD & FREE TRANSPORT TO AND FROM YOUR HOTEL IN SANUR THAT MAKE A MEAL THERE MORE SPECIAL. THEY HAVE A GREAT SELECTION OF FOOD TO TRY IN THE MENU BOTH INDONESIAN AND WESTERN-STYLE TOO. THE DECOR WITH THE WONDERFUL ARTWORK DOWN TO THE FRANGIPANI DECORATED TOILETS MAKES FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION EVERYDAY. THE STAF ARE VERY ATTENTIVE WITHOUT BEING OVERBEARING. THE ATMOSPHERE IS CALM EVEN WHEN THE PLACE STARTS TO GET BUSIER.
Favorite Dish:
MY 11YR OLD WAS STARVING & WANTED THE FULL SERVE OF BEEF STROGANOFF, IT WAS A MASSIVE SERVE & SO DELICIOUS SHE JUST MANAGED TO FINISH IT WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM US. MY DAD & I STARTED WITH SPRING ROLLS YET AGAIN A DIFFERENT VERSION FROM THE LAST RESTAURANT FOLLOWED BY TWO DIFFERENT BUT WONDERFUL BEEF DISHES AND I HAD TWO VERY STRONG COCKTAILS...
Smorgås (should be spelled smörgås for Swedish people) is a great café owned by a Swedish family.
It is one of the best coffee places in Sanur serving a lot of "home made" dishes. It is also a place where a lot of Swedish expats order their standard Swedish dishes (meat balls, gravlax etc). They serve some great food and healthy drinks whilst staff is friendly and helpful.
Favorite Dish:
Meatball sandwich and Quiche Bolognese is my absolute favourites. I also love the apple pie combined with a healthy juice.
i ate nasi campur there. the portion is big, and everyday they have different variation for their nasi campur. after that i had cheese cake for dessert. the cakes here is very famous. some people come here just for the cake.
Favorite Dish:
the cakes
Ahhhhh! The things we can do to our bodies!
We can cherish and worship our temples,
like we can use to abuse them
by filling ourselves with
processed foods, dairy, and toxins.
If you’re feeling a bit unbalanced
and want to nourish yourself
then heading over to Sanur where
Manik Organik is could be
an attribute to your health.
Besides serving healthy food,
they also offer natural remedies.
A great place to obtain items such as
Chickweed, Nettle, Burdock, Red Clover, etc.
Consultations in natural healing
are also provided.
Yoga and meditation is also offered.
