Fixed Price Shopping

by screamin

I remember back to my first trip to Bali and bargaining to buy a pair of sandals, and I had found out a day or two later that I had paid enough to buy another 10 pairs. Talk about a novice at bargaining, I bet the store owner and her family had Mc Donalds for dinner that night. I am pleased to say my skills have improved and I get a good cheap price now. But I find I take quite a few hours up if not a full day in shopping and with bargaining sometimes can take a while to get the price you want. A few years ago I stumbled onto Turikas shop at Melasti Art Market on the corner of Melasti St and Shadadewa St (Garlic Lane) Fixed price and a friendly smile, Turika the owner is a lovely women and very helpful, she gave us each a bottle of cold water and an hour later I had made a new friend just about finished all my shopping. This was too easy and so much better than haggling over a few...

Batik Popiler II: Batik in Indonesia

by oprandip

Batik Popiler II is Bali’s foremost producer and retailer of handmade batik products. Over almost half a century, we have built an international reputation built on exemplary quality, creativity and reverence for this centuries old art form.Batik Popiler II was founded way back in 1962 by Bapak (Mr) Wayan Matra and Ibu (Mrs) Made Tanjung. In the fifties, Ibu Tanjung was earning her living trading spices. Her work brought her into regular contact with farmers in remote parts of Bali who would always ask her for batik from the neighboring island of Java. Ibu Tanjung would make regular visits there, handpicking the finest examples including exquisite antique pieces, which were much more readily available at the time. Business went well and she opened a batik shop in Bali’s capital Denpasar – the very first of its kind on the island. Batik painting, sarong, woodcarving, pillow case, dress,...

ET Club: Funky Shoes!

by SFHulaGIrl

This Jakarta-based company has some of the most creative shoes I've seen in Bali thus far. Their shoes tend to have lots of enamel accessories on them - ladybugs, starfish, turtles, frogs, etc. The colors are vibrant, the designs are young and fresh. Prices range from about US$35 for slippers to US$100 for more eccentric designs. They also sell bags and enamel jewelry. There are two branches in Seminyak, the other being near Cafe Moka, though the selection isn't as good.

Surf Shop: Buy wonderful underwear for women

by swimbikini

If we are travelling around Bali especially in Kuta closed to Kuta Beach, we will massively found many surf shop around or in any corner of the street even in any narrow street path to the beach. They offer many surf cloth and accessories, bikini, and some other popular swimwear brand. The price generally cheap but for some brand will cost higher. With their good quality cloth and cheap price, the product are quite satisfied. Bikini, swimwear, underwear for women, and surf cloth. USD 7 - USD 60

Faberge-like Beauties: PAINTED BALI EGGS

by RoyJava

You can buy a lot of things on Bali, and even find something new you never have seen before. So it is with the "Painted Eggs" from Bali. These beautiful Faberge-style eggs (famous for his elaborate 19th century Painted Eggs) you can find at the Kunang Kunang shops, not that many seen. And maybe, ... maybe you'll find some eggs with some of my paintings on an Bali Egg ... (see pic and Website in Dutch) So those eggs are the shells from either duck, goose, ostrich (kasuari) and even crocodile eggs. Some are selected for perfect round shaped, unbroken ones. Very interesting how the Balinese art-painters create their subjects and produce a very artful, artistic product ...Painted Egg Example (in Dutch) Well,... on Bali these Painted Eggs are about $10, in the Netherlands you have to pay about $200!

Daun-theGift Shop: Aromatherapy & Tasteful Gifts

by Wild_Orchid

Located at Kuta Square, just nearby the Kuta Art Market (with its little stalls selling t-shirts, key-chains, sarongs), this store is quite a gem. With a tasteful layout, the merchandise on display looks classy and of good quality, but it is really not too expensive. Service is good as well. Last but not least, the air-con actually works! After making a comparison with a few other shops, I found that the massage oil and aromatherapy oils at Daun smelt very natural and not too strong and wasn't at all cloying. The scents come with exotic names such as Night Queen, Sandalwood, Jasmine,Cempaka, Frangipani, Ylang Ylang, Lavender, LemonGrass, Bergamot, Rose ~ who could resist? Certainly not me! (wink!)I felt that the pricing was very reasonable when compared to its quality and packaging.(most suitable for gifts)Apart from these oils, the store also had some lovely wooden, painted doll...

Mas village: Woodcarving

by aramat

It's interesting to see in Bali that villages specialise in different crafts. Mas village is famous for wood carving, so almost the whole village is one large craft shop. Woodcarving is a skill given by the Gods to the people of the village and transmitted from generation to generation. Originally the woodcarvers were all Brahmins who worked only on ritual or courtly projects. During the centuries, different syles of woodcarving have developed. The tourist boom started mostly in the 1970's. All kinds of objects are made: masks, sculptures, bowls, etc. Different kinds of wood such as ebony and sandalwood are used for carving (but be careful, cheap products are not made from precious wood: the desired dark colour is often the result of the careful application of black shoe shine - you can smell it). All kinds of prices - bargaining is a must

Any.: Wood things.

by Dizzyhead

You will find the shops all over Bali. On Bali you can find many nice and beautiful things made in wood. Many handycraft things and the ones I remember most were the masks. Very beautiful. I have bought one here, but I dont know where it is now. I think I have lost it, so it means that I maybe have to go back to Bali and buy another one. I can ensure you that they are really wonderful. I found one on the airport when we left, but they did not accept credit cards, so I could not buy it.

The Discovery Shopping Mall: Western style shopping mall

by fachd

You don’t have bargaining skills. Well, do your shopping at one of the largest shopping mall in Bali and it is strictly fix price, no bargaining here. It is a western style shopping mall. There are many retail outlets selling from handicrafts, batiks, paintings to well known brands from overseas. Inside the mall there are restaurants and cafes. Outside the mall facing the beach there are also restaurants and cafes, we had refreshment in one of the outside restaurants.
