Ubud Art Market: Bargain is the power

by masonwong

With good bargaining skills, you can get good stuffs here at very good prices. At first they will set a high price. Once you decide to go, they will ask you to offer a price. Often, with your persistence, they tend to agree on the low prices and close the deal, unless they're ridiculously low!Another good place to shop for clothes is the small market in Monkey Forest (on your way leaving the spot for the exit). The old ladies there seemed to be so desperate for sales, so with your tactful skills and persistence on your prices, you can get good deals. I managed to buy 3 pieces of nice clothes at Rp. 10,000 per piece only. Nothing specific. It depends on what you like and wish to buy. As little as possible!

Beads Necklace, Bracelet & Anklet

by yipsufen

If you fancy some inexpensive and casual accessories, here you can find some stalls selling handmade necklace, bracelet, earrings and anklets made from beads or sea shells. If you can't find one that you like, ask the stall owner to custom make one for you on the spot. Handwork is delicate and there are many kinds of beads to pick from. Some necklace designs look so exotic and unique and will truly reflect the wearer individuality.

Matahari Kuta Square: Shopping under the cool sun

by yipsufen

This is a departmental store located at the heart of Kuta / Legian street. You can find everything under one roof and shop at your own comfort. There is a post office inside Matahari Kuta Square.Another shop worth mentioning is the Circle K convenience shop which are available at all strategic location. You can stock up your mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and other food stuff at reasonable price. In the souvenir section, you can choose from a variety of aromatherapy products and quality knick-knacks for your family and friends. Apart from souvenir, you can purchase some local food stuff from the supermarket section. Hot chili sauce, salted peanuts, prawn crackers and coffee are some of the favourite items. Prices are higher but quality is assured. If you are buying any art object or woodcarving here, please check your items properly before they are wrapped up in recycled...

Sukawati

by savitha

Shops in Sukawati sells even cheaper than those found in Ubud....You may haggle here, but to all out there, the art of haggling is not onlyabout getting the cheapest price, its about paying the price which you deem is appropriate for the item. Pay the price you seem is alright as people need to earn a living. I've heard from travellerswho brag about how they tried so hard to bargain till the shopkeepers jaw almost dropped asit was totally unreasonable... Please be reasonable and don't forget to shop till you drop... Lots!!!You can get great accessories, clothes, sarongs', souvenirs , batik , paintings etc. Depending on what you're buying . A simple sarong can be purchased around Rp$20,000 - ard USD$2 and simple accessories like chunky chains can be purchased for Rp$40,000 for around 3 to 4 pieces...

Woodcarvings

by yipsufen

Wood carving, like stone carving, has traditionally featured largely in temple and palace architecture with little freestanding 'sculpture' work produced commercially. Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate pillars, door panels, lintels and window shutters with the aim of protecting the buildings from evil intruders. Scenes of legendary figures placed within floral decor set a more pleasant and educational tone. When producing tools and objects for everyday use, sculptors had a much freer hand in choosing subject matter. With the arrival of European influences, wood carving started to develop along more innovative and commercial lines. Although there have been noteworthy carvers, artistic integrity has suffered as a result of the commercial boom in the tourism industry. These days whole villages specialize in producing certain styles of work. The village of Mas, for...

No. 76 (Kuta Shops): Buying Tees and sarongs?

by tehsusu

Friendly service by Rini (see picture). Although she does quote a higher price, it is not as cut-throat high as other shops. Most shops quote higher than shopping centre prices, but hers is way below that. Also she's willing to discount a lot, especially when we bought more. She is easily humoured. Local craft, tees, ethnic slipper/bags, all these are cheap buys here. Overseas, the prices are inflated, but the quality is almost the same.Ubud has nicer stuff of seemingly better quality. For a pair of ubiquitous ethnic slippers, I paid Rp15,000 (~S$3). I think prices can go slightly below that. My cute japanese clogs were also bought at this price.I also bought most of my clothes for Rp20,000 to Rp25,000.
