Batik Textiles

by yipsufen

The Batik of Bali provides another venue of showing the artistic excellence of the Balinese people. Their beautiful designs, inspired by religious mythologies to everyday encounters, spread throughout the world. Originally stimulated by Javanese motifs, dominated by wayang and other mythological characters, contemporary batik artists have also experienced artistic development that parallels that of paintings. Modern batik artists express themselves through various subjects, from objects of nature such as birds or fish to daily activities such as cremation (ngaben) procession or tourist attractions as well as religious and mythological stories, accompanied by modern interpretation.

JALAN LEGIAN & KUTA SQUARE

by ancient_traveler

Kuta and Legian have more than enough to appease any shopper’s withdrawal symptoms. Starting from Kuta Square, you can find shops for gorgeous printed silk with high quality and shops gets you kitted out for sun and fun, as well as funky rags for clubbing to show off that gorgeous new tan! Jalan Legian, running parallel to the beach, has a shop in almost every doorway. There have a number of smaller market-style shop where you can bargain hard for a better price.

Silversmith at Celuk

by yipsufen

Celuk, just north of Denpasar, is the silver center of Bali. There's a whole lot of shops to choose from, and almost all have a large team of jewelers at work out the back, filling orders for other shops for export.Celuk is a town famous for its silver jewelleries. There are a number of shops here open for viewing by walk-in tourists or tour groups. Other than jewelleries like necklace, pendant, ring, earrings, brooch, etc., there are other silver sculptured masterpieces for sale. There is a variety you can choose from but the design is practical and contemporary with nothing fancy.

Any Shop: Shopping at tourist spot

by langzi

As usual in many places, there are gift shops near the tourist area. The 1st asking price can be very unbelivable and does not make sense at all.The asking price for a normal white cheapo t-shirt with Bali words printed can be RP100000. My experience was that come out with the price that you think reasonable which is the price normally it cost in your country. My way of bargaining will be first to slash it at to 10 to 20% of the asking price. Then they will offer you 50% of the asking price. So you bargain from there. Stick to your price and keep on move out from the shop, the price will drop :)

Market Place: Handbag Heaven

by travellinmeags

Available almost everywhere, market places and in shops. There are so many handbags in Bali you won't know where to look. I have a real weakness for them so I put a limit on only buying 1 a day. (I currently have 32 Bali handbags). There are your knock off handbags of Gucci, Prada ect. and there are also your hand made ones. What ever style your into there are handbags and wallets to suit everyone. If your after a better quality consider looking in tailors for genuine leather handbags, purses and wallets. Always bargain hard!

Plates and gifts

by travellinmeags

There are shops selling these items all over Bali but I found the best quality to be Ubud and Seminyak. Plates, platters, bowls and other items. I love to buy these items for myself but more importantly as gifts for friends. They make the perfect engagement/wedding present as they are beutiful and personal. Like everything in Bali haggle hard!

Best buys in local shops: Wood and other crafts

by alvis

When shopping for local crafts it is important to bargain with the seller. You are likely to half their prices and maybe more. There were 3 main places we found crafts for sale.1. The resorts and taxis are likely to bring you to craft villages and houses when on trips. These will be the most expensive (by a large percentage) and the resort / taxi will get a cut of the high profits for bringing you there.2. Local markets i.e. the market square at Ubud. These will be the average prices found around Ubud and can be bargained down quite a bit.3. Small rural stores are by far the cheapest. When visiting the rice terraces the girlfriend saw a wood craft store by the road and called in for a look. She ended up leaving the shop with a 5 foot statue and 5 foot wood carving which cost over half the price as seen anywhere else.My advice is to shop around, check quality and compare prices. Always...
