All around Bali: Handbags

by traceandjase

All around Bali, shops and street stalls have gotten on the fake LV & YSL bandwagon. The shops have the higher quality 'fakes' and they are made of leather, the ones on the streets usually are not. The great thing about the shops is that they can make any style, colour, fabric bag you want within a couple of days. So many people from Australia have their particular shop that they go to. I would say ask around, via friends or from other VTers as it can be overwhelming when you get there. Take a picture, from a magazine or photo and they can virtually reproduce it to prefection. So it pays to have a bit of an idea in mind before you go. On the street for a non-leather bag about US$5 - US$10, depending on how hard you bargain. In a shop they're usually a set price (some will give you a discount for multiple purchases) around US$10 - US$20.

Stalls everywhere in Bali: Dodgy sunglasses

by traceandjase

Like most things in Bali, if there's one shop that has it, there's usually a hundred. Most market stalls all have the latest styles of fake Oakelys, Raybans and every other type of sunglasses brand you can think of. Obviously they are not of the same quality, nor have the proper tinted glass, but they do have the logo and that's a lot for some people. I didn't get any, but my partner (who manages to break two of three pairs a year) picked up about six pairs. Like 'quality' sunglasses you should try each pair on, as there's different sizes and different tints. Like most things in Bali, the more you buy the cheaper each item gets. About US$3 - US$5 is average, but again it depends on how hard you bargain and what you're prepared to pay.

Many shops throughout Bali: Dodgy DVDs

by traceandjase

It seems in the last five years every second shop in Bali is selling DVDs. Most of these are pirate copies and there is a vast range in quality of the DVDs on offer.I'm sure that there will be a crackdown in the next few years and I'm not saying go out and buy them, but people must be as there's so many stores in DVD stores in Bali.Be aware of your countries customs laws, some countries like mine are fairly blase about a few DVDs but if you bought hundreds back in the country there would probably be the fines and all of that. And don't forget it is ripping off the orginal artists. If you do decide to buy them, make sure that you check the DVDs for scratches and even sample them in the store as some are transfers from video cameras in the back of cinemas. There is a range of DVDs from latest release, music DVDs, TV shows and oldies but goodies. There is a lot of similarity from shop to...

Poppies Lane II Shops: Poppies Lane II / Shops

by bryINpoland

If looking for some great bargaining shops within Bali, then i suggest a visit to Poppies Lane II, in Kuta. The street that stretches between the popular Jalan Pantai Strip, and Jalan Legian Strip, is well known for its great shops. Here you can basicly find any of your needs when it comes to gifts for the people back home. Whether or not its, t-shirts, dvds, hats, watches, sunglasses, wood carvings, hand bags, surf boards, jewelery, sarongs, shoes, or whatever it may be. The odds are you will find them on Poppies Lane II.If you are shy, or intimidated by merchants calling out, and saying whatever they can muster up, to get you in their shops. Then this is not the street for you. If you enjoy bargaining and looking for those unique gifts for yourself, or people back home, Then this is the place. This street is filled with character and characters alike, and in my opion, a must see while in...

Kuta: Wood Carving bargains

by Wardatul

As wood carving is very famous in Bali and could easily be found anywhere, but it is recommended that if you really want to buy wood carving, do it in SUKAWATi. Along Kuta area the prices are expensive and even though you bargain, it would still be expensive. I bought a wooden box in the Holy temple for USD 0.80 cents but in Kuta would cost you USD 3.00 Wood Carving, straw bags and local handicrafts.

Mala: LOCAL CRAFT

by aussiejen

There are lots of these little types of shops along Jl Legian. We happened to go into this one and got some good bargains, but only by bartering with the nice young men working there. I bought some drink coasters inlaid with cinnamon bark, they smell beautiful.

Markets and local shops: Bargaining - what to pay

by Winged

There are shops *everywhere* in Bali. All but the fancier boutiques and department stores will accept bargaining.Legian Street in Kuta was our favourite spot for shopping, but we also found some good things in Sanur near the Sanur Beach Hotel, and in the market around Tanah Lot. We found the best things to buy in Bali include shoes - see the picture, that sort of shoe abounds - jewellery (most of it is quite chunky), hats, bags, and accessories - belts and so on. Most of it is so cheap.I'm sure there are plenty of other good things to buy but we were mostly looking at clothes (didn't find that many good clothes - mostly surf/beach clothes that we didn't want) and accessories and shoes. Now, when it comes to bargaining, there are all sorts of dos and don'ts, but just find a style that suits you. The thing is, some people won't accept 60,000R for a pair of shoes, and others will call after...
