How to find the best price

by balisunshine

1.BARGAINING. An American tourist offers these hard-nosed suggestions about getting the best possible value for your money when bargaining in Bali.FINDING OUT WHAT THINGS REALLY COST Most important; you've got to be willing to walk away. You'll never get the lowest price standing in one spot and discussing it. Nine times out of ten, the seller’s price will drop closer to your last offer if you walk away.Method 1:Try and try again. Pick something that is common throughout markets and set yourself a very low target price. Try to bargain for it. Fail? Raise your price a little and try somewhere else. Do it again, until someone agrees. It's good practice, but remember that if the seller accepts your offer convention dictates that you must buy at that price.Method 2: Eavesdrop on other tourists. Listen to them bargain, and find out what they paid. Often, the shopkeeper will sell you the same...

Kuta Square: Kuta Square

by bryINpoland

Kuta Square is located on Jalan Kartika Plaza. Most of the stores are from the western world (meaning you can find them in the US, Europe, Australia), and there is no bargaining like the privatly own shops. There seems to be a dozen surf shops along the street like Quicksilver and Billabong. Nadine's favorite is the women's store Body and Soul. There you can find some great deals on designer clothes that would cost twice as much back home. Also on the street you can find the Kuta Art Market. The market is known for its basketware and other craft goods made in Bali. Many come to Kuta Square for the Matahari imporium. You can find great deals here on Clothes, that are a lot more expensive at the newer shopping centers around Kuta. Also it pays to familiarize yourself with prices of some of the local crafts here, so when you bargain around town, you have an idea of what things are going for...

Lots of them along Jl Legian: Beads and more beads

by Tijavi

If you're a big bead fan like me, Jl Legian would be paradise for you. Here you'll find rows and rows of shops selling beads and other related accessories like those made of shells. The shopper will be spoiled for choice from the exotic to the cosmopolitan, to the very ethnic. Bead accessories - necklace, anklet, bracelet, etc.

Ubud Markets

by bryINpoland

The markets in Ubud are one of the most popular markets throughout Bali. Located about 1 hour north of Kuta, Ubud and its markets are worth a visit.Ubud markets are well known for their cheaper prices on wood carvings, and silver. Prices tend to be cheaper then say the markets in Kuta because of less tourist in the area. Ofcourse, just because i say it tends to be cheaper, doenst mean they cant sight a sucker from miles away. Like any markets in Bali, be prepared to do some tough bargaining.During the morning hours its transformed into a farmers market, where you can get localy grown fruits and and vegitables. During the day, and evening its a great place to buy local crafts made in the villages that surround Ubud.Whether you are looking to do some great bargain shopping, or just stroll through the markets and enjoy the atmosphere. The markets of Ubud are well worth a visit.

Movie Pirating

by bryINpoland

Bali's is well known for their cheap and illegal sales of DVD movies. For dirt cheap prices, ( for example 350,000 Rp for 100 movies, plus 40 free. $25 US $33 AU ) you can purchase 100 movies for the price of 1 movie in the states or australia.Though many people will disagree, i am against illegal movie pirating, and urge anyone traveling to Bali, to not purchase any illegally copied movies.I admit myself that the urge to do so is very tempting, especially since there is little or no laws against purchasing pirated copies in Bali. But please remember that the purchasing, and downloading of pirated movies causes the movie industries, and everyone connected with them, to lose millions of dollars a year. I am tired of the excuse "they make millions or enough anyways". Its not your money being lost, there for, its not your right to pass judgement. Please if you are visiting Bali, or any...

Bali Design at various Shops: a spot of Bikini Shopping !

by Wild_Orchid

Ladies, if you're from Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand where the variety of swimwear is rather limited & nice bikinis are hard to find, (or if you are a guy who would like to see his lovely lady wearing a bikini), don't miss out on a spot of bikini shopping while in Bali. There are numerous shops at Kuta & Legian and the choices are pretty good. The locally made Bali Design bikinis (see pics)are priced from 155,000 rupiahs. Bali Design's designer is a lady called Jessie Norman~I think she could be Australian. I also managed to buy one at a clearance price of 50,000 rupiahs. Prices differ from store to store-but with the variety, you would be sure to find something that matches your budget!

Matahari Departmental Store: Shirts for less than USD2!!!

by chatterley

As you all know, shopping is cheap in Bali, but how cheap, you may ask...well, we bought this cotton shirt at Matahari (it was on sale, 40% off the usual selling price), and guess how much it cost? Just SGD3 (slightly more than USD1)!!! Yup, don't bring too many pieces of clothing to Bali, just buy them there!

(Unknown): Hand Bags

by bryINpoland

While in Bali we wanted to by some gifts for some family and friends. Nadine had her heart set on getting some purses, or hand bags for the ladies on our list.Along Poppies Lane II in Kuta, just to the side of the Bounty hote, across from a blue water tower, we found this great shop, with a lovely owner. She had a wide selection of different bags and styles, that were just perfect for unique gifts for people back home. The shop owner was very friendly and spoke excellent english. She didnt waste our time with excessive bargaining, and worked with us to agree on a price that we were more then happy to pay. These are the types of pleasant purchases that can make shopping in Bali so enjoyable. When shopping in the Kuta are, i suggest a visit to Poppie Lane II, and this lovely hand bag shop. I think you will be as happy as were were with the outcome.*** Make sure you are familiar with your...

Money Changer in Legian Street: Currency Note Exchange

by samantha_chee

They prefer USD's big note, i.e. USD 50 or USD 100. The exchange rates stated on their "notice board" are meant for big note. If you only change USD 5 (of course, for Rupiah), you'll get lesser.I found out that exchange rate for money changers at Legian St are higher. It is not advisable to exchange currency notes at airport's money changers. You'll get lower rate. Legian st's money changer pays around 5 % higher than Kuta's money changer for USD 100.
