Celuk and Other Parts of Bali: Antique and Modern Jewelry

by Ubudian

Bali, and all of Indonesia, is very highly regarded as having among the world’s best gold and silversmiths. The level of workmanship and pure artistry is second to none anywhere in the world. This fact is no more apparent than in the exquisite and finely detailed jewelry that can be found all across this great and rich archipelago. So great is the diversity of beautiful jewelry here, that to discuss it meaningfully requires breaking it down somewhat into categories.A) Modern. Modern jewelry, as I define it, is any jewelry product which is clearly marked with an alloy standard. For gold, or what we call emas, this is typically 22 karat or .9167 pure, and silver, .925 or classic sterling. Other modern standards of gold can be found, viz, 18 k and 14k, but those pieces are most likely production left over pieces, or were rejected due to one flaw or another by an exporter. Traditional...

All Over Bali: Buying Art in Bali

by Ubudian

With art, be that sculpture or paintings, it is the same situation as what I wrote about antiquing in Bali, but this field is further complicated by the Balinese time tested and tried manner of teaching art by copying and emulating the works of “the master” under which they study. Most students of art will not sign their work in the master’s name, (and this practice is not condoned in any way by the masters), but it happens. My tip here would be that if one is truly interested in purchasing an art work by a living Balinese master, then seek out the artist, and purchase it directly from the artist, or the acknowledged gallery or galleries that is authorized to exhibit and sell such works. For the very famous Balinese artists, always insist on a photo certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. If, in reading this tip, (which understandably is not for the vast majority of visitors...

All Over Bali: Antiquing in Bali

by Ubudian

The very mention of the word antique in association with Bali will often result in a raised eyebrow from many who have tried to find one that was not “made to order.” There is a very good reason for this, as for certain, the vast majority of what is touted here in Bali as antique is likely no older than a new born baby. That is not as a result of a proactive scam, but rather it is a more loose association of the word to the look of antique. In Bali, three kinds of items which are called antique can be found:A) Total fabrications or reproductions made from new materials but with a patina (a finish or surface) imparting an aged look.B) Partial fabrications using authentically old elements in combination with new elements to create an even more convincing appearance. This phenomenon is most often found in antique furniture where old parts are combined, or re-cycled with new parts to present...

Its a quite new mall where you can find everything:food, clothes, shoes, electonic things, furnitures, cosmetics, souvenirs. The quality here is better than outside stores.Be sure to visit a souvenir and handcraft market that is on ground floor and with better prices than the one that its on 1st floor.

Bali Collection: Un-Indonesian

by Emile72

We would have not shopped here that much it is wasnt for the fact that the Bali Collection was a 5 minutes walk from our hotel. There are quite a few shops (and quite a few empte lots). Basically from clothing point of view, the same style and prices as in Kuta. From art point of view, it is indeed more epxensive then on the street. There are also a lot of restaurants and even a Startbucks. I found it a pleasant place to hang around in the evening, though it really lacks any atmosphere. You can compare it with an average outdoor outlet mall in the US.

Shopping streets.: Kuta is THE place to be

by Emile72

We took the shuttle bus from our hotel in Nusa Dua to Kuta. 25.000RP round trip. Kuta provides great shopping, from wonderful paintings to designer clothes (whether or not fake). The quality of shopping for sure is way better than e.g. in Thailand. Here, Dolce and Gabbana shirts at least look like Dolce and Gabbana shirts. Of course a bit more expensive, but for sure worth the money. So, you can shop, shop, shop in Kuta. Dozens of restaurants, lots of people and a crowded beach are to be found there as well. We found it a good alternative to stay in calm Nusa Dua and go shopping from time to time in Kuta.
